Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

"You have to be responsible for your year, despite what happened in April and May," Konerko said as he prepared to join the White Sox in spring training next week.

"There were times early in the year that — especially like fastballs where I wasn't getting to places I usually get to — you kind of have that question, like, OK, is this because my hand hurts a little bit or just that time when you stop hitting those pitches like you used to?" he acknowledged.

"I have always been a fastball hitter, so when you see yourself not hitting fastballs, that can weigh on you."

Kenny on BP's projections
As White Sox pitchers and catchers report for spring training Sunday, Ken Williams might want to make Baseball Prospectus 2009 mandatory reading.

The Sox general manager, who maintains a football mentality from his days at Stanford, prefers his team to play with a chip on its shoulder, the bigger the better.

Well, in this case, we’re talking Mt. Everest: Last place in the American League Central, third-worst record (74-88) in the American League.

Williams’ reaction to the book’s annual projection from computer-generated statistical analyses?

“Who cares?”

and look for mr. silver’s appearance at the link

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

Except...

That if you read the article, Silver credits Williams and thinks the Sox will beat that projection. It’s really not personal with PECOTA.

Besides, there aren’t a lot of reasons to think this team will be above-average this year. I’m optimistic about the young talent that they’ve assembled, but I don’t think it’ll translate until 2010.

You forget we won the division last year.

No one in the division improved greatly in the offseason. We didn’t hit or have a good OBP last year with old vets, I think the young guys will actually energize this team. I know it’s not personal, nate silver is a sox fan. How can they predict what we will do when we don’t even know who will be playing where yet?

That's kind of the point

look at the breakdown. Obviously things change if playing times and players change. And certainly some players will perform over and under baselines. Ultimately though it doesn’t matter. The important thing is the projected strength of the division. Not good. That means its pretty much open to any of the “hot” teams.

I can't find it anymore, but someone somewhere once posted a "generic Spring Training story" in that same vein

It included places to slot in the names of players from whatever team you wished: “ has been working out with a new personal trainer and is looking good. The team expects to rebound this year. In the bullpen, has really opened some eyes.”, etc.

I’d be happy to take your bet. Although I’d like to know a bit more of what was considered a positive test. I haven’t actually looked into it, but was it just illegal steroids or were they testing for things like amphetamines. And I know a few guys who are in their early 20’s already as bald as PK. unusual now that older players can't prop up their careers by using PEDs anymore.

remember, we’re often dealing with people on this board whose only point of reference is the “steroid era” where sometimes funny things happened in the usual aging process.

I don’t even give a flying saucer if these guys want to potentially hurt their bodies to send moon shots out of the park. As long as my team is using the most up to date steroids…

i don't think anyone on here is claiming we have a team full of altar boys

but what is the point in just speculating who may have done anything? until a media leak or anything of the sort reveals the other hundred-something names on that list its a pointless exercise. and even that list won’t be complete because there could be users who reitred before then or started playing after then.

But Frank Thomas was always his own guy, he always lived by some sort of code that wasn’t especially clear to anyone but him.

No one is acting as if the Sox are squeaky clean but this is kind of silly. So in 04-06 with testing he was cool but in 07 “stringent” testing began so he stopped???

His ISO power for years 01-08
01 (25) .225
02 (26) .195
03 (27) .163 (sample survey year)
04 (28) .258 (real testing PK decides to start juicing)
05 (29) .250
06 (30) .239
07 (31) .231 (stringent testing PK stops)
08 (32) .199 (Pks really stops??)

CF thought.....

Yeah—it’s inevitable at this point that at least for the first couple weeks of March DWISE, JO and BA will battle it out for opening day CF honors.
But….if none of the three overwhelm (very likely IMO) then I think there’s some logic in getting J Edmonds in the fold. Presumable he enjoyed his stint in Chicago last season and we know KW wanted him during the winter of 2008 (Edmonds actually rejected a trade that KW and Mozeliak had agreed upon)……anyway, I still think Edmonds plays a pretty solid CF (though I am sure some of you on here could throw a stat showing otherwise)….and though his bat ain’t what it used to be he slugged 19 HRS in 250 Abs last season and got on base at a .369 clip (Cub numbers, Padres numbers excluded)…..he’d sit against lefties (BA would then get the call)……but what I also like is that he provides more left-handed thump after Thome…..and I certainly don’t think anyone here would be shocked if Thome’s 38 year-old ass spent a stint or two on the DL at some point…..
anyway…just a thought…..what do you guys think?

I have no idea how well he handled the position, though.

He also played in the outfield a bit, but I don’t think in center.

I’m not sure why nobody seems interested in Ray Durham. I wouldn’t mind the Sox giving him a cheap one-year deal.

i turned on the Bulls game last night wiht 6 seconds leftm down three

Gordon at the line.
Hits all three free throws.
Hinrich steals the inbound, calls a TO
5 seconds left
Bulls inbound, weak ass lob, stolen by Wade, calls a TO.
3 seconds left
Marion inbounds to Wade, back to Marion
Wide Open dunk to win the game.
literally the oldest trick in the book.
and that is why the Bulls are dead to me.

Glad to get the reminder in less than 7 seconds of game time.

that was a nice insight and certainly

makes sense given the payroll number we are looking at . . .

by jc2313 on Feb 13, 2009 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

from reading the tea leaves, they're probably anticipating something like an overall decline in revenue of about 15%

so if you drop payroll about 15%, makes sense.

advertising revenue

They aren’t including the increases in parking, tickets and concessions.

"overall decline in revenue"

and i’m sure you’re familiar with that whole supply and demand thing, right? price goes up, often units sold goes down?

point being

that simply because they’re selling something for more does not mean they are going to recoup the revenue from what is the almost certain decline in all those things you mention. i’m sure the organization has a far better grasp of what effect price increases have on ticket sales and so on. their conclusion likely was that keeping things at their former prices would provide less revenue than increasing those prices. which makes sense for products such as season tickets that are less elastic.

Usually, when a company, sports franchise, sex shop

increases the price of a goods or service – the goal is to increase revenue. True, an increase in this product/service will drive some buyers away. But, in the end the added revenue from the price increase should outway the declined revenue from number of units/services sold. Otherwise your cost/benefit guy should be fired.

What I read in the quote from Boyer above is that it looks like advertising revenue is down 10-15. They are decreasing the payroll about 15. So about a wash. What I don’t know is if they plan on increasing revenue based on ticket prices, parking and concessions.

In a normal economy, one would think attendance would be up after a division title year. But, with the recession it might be down. We know prices are going up – but what will happen to attendance? I am sure they have a much better grasp of this than I do.

of course the goal is to "increase" revenue.

but from what base point is one referrring. sox fans seem to be thinking “last year’s ticket revenue” when they talk about this increase, i.e. the white sox are going to be making more money in ticket sales this season as opposed to last. which seems a highly tenuous assertion to be making when it seems a certainty that, whatever the price, attendance will be down. the base point should be what the expected revenue for 2009 would be with the “old” ticket prices and the new ticket prices. i’m guessing the expected revenue from tickets, no matter the price, should be down from last year. i’d also guess the point of the increase was to prevent that decline from being too large.

You could be right

Have you heard/seen anything about the number of season tickets sold this year compared to last?

nope.

however, i would imagine they’d be trumpeting it if it had remained stable and/or increased. of course, theoretically there’s still time before the season.

Single game tickets went on sale today too

we’ll see what happens there as well.

One other major revenue source are the luxury boxes, bought mainly by guess who? Businesses and large corporations…that’s gonna hurt.

Nothing specific, but this would seem to support Larry's statement
Now, going into 2009, we have an economic crisis like we have never had before. There are challenges, but the season-ticket base remains strong. We obviously are trying to add to it and would love to get back to the ‘06 level. But we’ve never been there in our history, so it’s our goal to get back there

They had over 90% renewal

I’ve heard as high as 95% – But Brook mentioned over 90 at Soxfest. That is probably because post season had the lock-in clause. On the price increase, it was just under 10%, so I’d hate to see what Brook considers a large jump. Add to that, the bargain Mondays erase any saving you get in the season ticket package. (Based on ticket cost – not availabilty or location)
