White Sox Spring Training Roundup -- Familiar Faces

We've gone from zero to fluff piece overload in the last two weeks. So I thought I'd try to distill everything that's been written over that time. Recapping everything would be a massive post, however, so I'll just stick to the familiar faces, the returning regulars, for this installment.

there has to be a more convenient way to present the data on a 3.5" screen.

by hugh on Feb 18, 2009 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

the data presentation isn't the problem.

It’s the inability to mark a comment as read (ala Z key here). I agree though that things get “lardy”/intolerable around 300 posts. I don’t mind cuz that’s how I know it’s time for bed.

I find it a pain in the arse on my smartphone

to scroll though all the comments, can do about 50, but if a a thread gets lots of replies it slows it down too much, and people have long sigs that end up taking up half the screen.

anyway, as I alluded to above, I used to go on a board where they enabled mobile posting and almost every time someone got drunk you would end up with pics taken on their phones. It it happened on SSS every time someone went to a game the board would be clogged up with hundreds of blurry pictures of Carlos Quentins backside etc. It’s not a good move.

Russell, Stewart on rebound
By Mark Gonzales

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Adam Russell knows he has plenty of competition for a spot in the White Sox’s bullpen.

So instead of trying to impress the Sox’s staff by displaying his array of various arm angles, Russell is trying to simplify his delivery until he can command his fastball and other pitches.

The 6-foot-8 Russell impressed pitching coach Don Cooper during Tuesday’s bullpen session with a fluid overhand delivery.

“It’s the key to getting everything else in sight,” Russell said. “The sidearm (delivery) will come. But this is more of a natural motion.”

Backup catcher Chris Stewart appears grateful to return to the Sox after stints with Texas and the New York Yankees in the past two seasons.

“When I left, I thought opportunities were better elsewhere,” Stewart said. “Once I was gone, I didn’t realize how good it was here. The grass isn’t greener on the other side. It’s good to be back.”

Jim Thome wants to play two more seasons
By Mark Gonzales

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Designated hitter Jim Thome said he would like to play two more seasons but realizes he’s not getting younger and has slightly modified his workout program to ensure his longevity.

“That’s the goal,” Thome said Wednesday morning. Thome said hitting 600 home runs also would be a milestone for him. He has hit 541 homers in his career but can become a free agent after this season and is aware of the slow free agent market, even for sluggers like Frank Thomas.

Thome said steroid revelations by Alex Rodriguez were “surprising” to him.

"Personally, I don’t think he never needed to do it. He’s that good. I can’t speak for him or anyone else. The bottom line is it’s a disappointing thing. It’s disappointing that it keeps coming back up in a time where we’ve had the testing going on.

Leaders of both political parties have called for measures to address the housing crisis.

At the end of last year, just over 9 percent of all home loans in the United States were in arrears or already in foreclosure, the Mortgage Bankers Association has said.

A total of 8.1 million U.S. homes, or 16 percent of all households with mortgages, could fall into foreclosure by 2012, according to a report by Credit Suisse.

by larry on Feb 18, 2009 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

Is that to say you're not a fan of the stimulus, larry?

(I know comments have been made for the past couple months about it, but I haven’t been able to cut through what’s sarcasm and what isn’t. And if you don’t feel compelled to answer, that’s fine too, I’m not trying to hold your feet to the fire (I’d be appreciative of any answer with some provisions) but am interested in your thoughts nonetheless.)

I haven’t paid as much attention to this stimulus thing as I should, but — and this might just be based on the my cynicism more than anything — I’m not really sure I like all of the ‘uniformity’ around the bill. I know Republicans basically seemed to hold firm on their side (right?), but still… I’m not intelligent enough to reason out why I don’t like something about the stimulus bill, but as you mentioned, there’s just something about piling on more debt that makes me a little queasy. I also feel uneasy because the guys attempting to ‘rescue’ the country are (probably) in some way (or to a certain degree) responsible for getting us into this mess.

I’ll also ask — is there an article out there that someone could provide that puts up (what is in your mind) a good argument against the stimulus — that is to say, don’t pile on more debt, take our lumps now (however severe) and basically try to ‘ride out’ the wave (or hurricane, or tornado, or apocalypse)?

by CWSKeith on Feb 18, 2009 2:47 PM CST up reply actions

is there an article out there that someone could provide that puts up (what is in your mind) a good argument against the stimulus

No.
Almost every “reputable” (doesn’t work for the Heritage Foundation) economist says the only wrong with the stimulus is that it isn’t enough. Further, when the credit markets have dried up, the banks are insolvent and need to be taken over by the governement (even Greenspan said “nationalize them” today), unemployment will be near or at double digits by the end of this year, the ONLY source of stimulation left is the Federal government.
And the ones who voted against the plan? Yes, THOSE are the ones responsible for getting us and the rest of the world in this mess.

by The Wizard on Feb 18, 2009 7:34 PM CST up reply actions

i'm less against the stimulus bill per se than against all the other spending.

which, when combined with the stimulus, results in an ungodly amount of debt. giving money to the automakers? silly. you want them to restructure, the government should tell them to file a bankruptcy and the government will be the DIP lender. the initial money given is fine if that’s the course that ends up being taken – a company like GM can’t file a “disorderly” bankruptcy or you end up with a clusterfuck situation like lehman’s bankruptcy was and still is, to a degree. if more money is given to these dying companies, it’s just pissing it away.

i’ve got no clue what is trying to be achieved with this TARP money. this piecemeal garbage isn’t solving a thing in the financial sector. decisive action needs to be taken because no one knows what the heck is going on so nothing is going to get resolved. either eliminate mark to market – which would very likely result in banks lending more money instead of sitting on their cash because they fear that tomorrow they’ll have to further lower the value on these illiquid assets – or have the government take these assets of their books. or something else. just do something that will actually result in an ending.

bottom line, sometimes businesses need to go away. will it hurt in the short run? sure. but we’re spending an awful lot of money to drag things out and i don’t think it will be better in the long-term.

by larry on Feb 18, 2009 3:05 PM CST up reply actions

Couldn't agree more re autos...

Ch. 11 is inevitable, no matter how many losers like Saturn, Hummer, etc. get cut.

And if it wasn’t for fear of the media/Republican spin, the banks would be nationalized by now. I think Greenspan gave Geithner cover today, and we’ll see it within a week, 2 at the outside.

Roland Burris

by Chiburb on Feb 18, 2009 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

The car, bank stuff I am not a fan of

For much the same stated reasons – with respect to the banks, we are going to have to nationalize them sooner or later, they are basically insolvent (the FDIC does this all the time with other insolvent banks, the only difference is the scope and political connections of these large banks).

I haven’t been seen a particularly good argument for why we can’t just let GM and Chrysler go Chap 11.

The argument I’ve heard re: the debt and the stimulus, is that with aggregate demand down so far, there is real risk of a deflationary spiral, which would be bad. So the choice is add some debt now for a stimulus to try to replace this demand as the spender of last resort, or to add the debt later due to a severely weakened economy reducing tax receipts. So from a debt perspective it seems like we’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t. If that’s the case, I’ll take the choice that leads to less weakening of the overall economy.

Viciedo reports, looking fit
By Mark Gonzales

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Dayan Viciedo, the 19-year-old Cuban slugger, reported Wednesday morning to the White Sox’s camp looking stronger than previous reports indicated.

Viciedo is now listed at 5-foot-11 instead of 6-foot-1, but appeared more fit than soft.

Viciedo shook hands with reporters but will address the media on Thursday while he gets acclimated to his new team since leaving Cuba last fall. His locker was placed near the stalls of fellow Cubans Jose Contreras and Alexei Ramirez.

After pitcher Octavio Dotel introduced Viciedo to equipment manager Vince Fresso, Viciedo was taken to the equipment room to be fitted with uniforms and equipment.

Viciedo worked out in Florida with Ramirez under the supervision of coach Joey Cora after signing a four-year, $10 million contract with the Sox last November.

i guess with sean casey gone, the competition for "nicest ballplayer" is on.

and it looks like cole hamels his bringing is A game to this one.

To take that point even further, turns out Cole and Heidi plan on adopting AIDS orphans from Africa.

“We’re in the process of adopting an AIDS orphan from Ethiopia,” she said. “Maybe two. I’m so pumped. I’d adopt six if I could. When I was five years old—I grew up in a very rural town in Missouri, and I had never even seen a black person—they asked us to draw a picture of ourselves in the future, and I drew myself holding hands with a line of tiny black stick figures. I’ve always wanted this.”

She and Cole are also preparing, under the auspices of the fledgling Hamels Foundation, to build a girls’ school in Malawi.

liars
The White Sox were something of a surprise winner in the AL Central last season, because the expectation that the “1,000-run” Tigers and the sabermetrically savvy Indians would be dueling for the honors went spectacularly unfulfilled. Even so, with the team only a few short months removed from that neat feat, we’re already predicting a fold-up as dramatic as the one we projected for the team in 2007, when we pegged the Sox to win 72 games, and despite their pre-season outrage on the subject, they won 72 games. This time around, we’re initially pegging them for 73 wins, which seems like a rather major step back for a division-winning ballclub.

So, what gives? Well, we really don’t have it out for the Sox, but when you look at what they’re walking into camp with, this is a team with a lot of question marks as far as who’s in the lineup and in the rotation, additional questions about the performance levels of key veterans in the near terms, and sort of more fundamental questions about how well it all comes together—or not.

by larry on Feb 18, 2009 1:41 PM CST reply actions

With the exception of the 73 win projection, there's nothing here I'd argue.

If pressed now, not knowing if KW has any tricks up his sleeve (Fields & Jenks for Aramis?), I’d say 81 wins. That’s my hedge against BP’s (annual) undervaluation.
But don’t make me defend that!

it isn’t a soft spot. it’s results based. Kenny’s done a lot of expectations defying stuff since he got called out in Moneyball. Outside of the Red Sox and Yankees, they’ve consistently produced the best pitching in the league over his tenure and the 2005-2008 run is even more remarkable.

Williams says interest in Lo Duca came and went
the Sox were in talks last month with free-agent catcher Paul Lo Duca, which general manager Ken Williams confirmed Tuesday.

‘‘There was interest,’’ Williams said. ‘‘There were some conversations.’’

A source said Lo Duca’s camp believed those talks could be revisited in spring training, but Williams put that to rest. Asked if he might pursue Lo Duca later in camp if he doesn’t like what he sees behind starter A.J. Pierzynski, Williams said no.

‘‘After some conversations and the flow of those conversations, I felt what we have here is just what we needed,’’ Williams said.
