And as bad as 2009 looks, Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf thinks 2010 could be worse if corporations keep cutting back. "Virtually every team is losing sponsors," Reinsdorf says.

Settling for FanShots after owning the front page
must feel like quite the come-down. (Nice piece, BTW.)
I seem to recall your completely panning the Swish trade. How now, brown cow? $21MM+/3 years for his production looks a bit expensive.

7 per for an average corner outfielder is still a relative bargain.
we’re paying significantly more for JD, and he may or may not actually be average, depending on how horrifying you think JD’s defense is.
Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.
Going forward he may be "average"
but last year he wasn’t. Can’t cherry-pick. Look to the value over the whole contract (and I would include his whole stint as a Sox when including stats, but that’s me).
If you think he is on par with Abreu, and Big Bob is getting <50% of JD’s money, then I see your point. I just choose not to look at it that way.

his whole contract is worth $27.75M (before club option in 2012 and assuming buyout of that).
he’s already put up about $19M of that. of course, if you’re the yankees, you’d like him to put up about $22M plus whatever value one ascribes to the shit they sent to the white sox minus texeira. but the yankees don’t care about money.
while the white sox still actually came out ahead in dollar terms for their one year tryst, the cost in players is fucking huge. rarely does buying high and selling low make sense. whether you think swisher will be a superstar going forward or will implode, the white sox totally blew this one.
Totally blew it? Remains to be seen.
Underwhelmed? Sure. And in light of the quickly deteriorating economy, what was incredibly cheap a few months ago is now “undervalued” at best, IMO. Of course, you are predicting a big bounce-back year from him, and if that happens your conclusion will be borne out. But it’s less eggregious of a trade now than it was made, IMO, from an economic standpoint.

trading what they did to oakland for one year of swisher and now a bunch of shit from the yankees is totally blowing it.
if swisher implodes, it means the sox mitigated the damages some from a colossal mistake of a trade because they got some shit and don’t have to pay the remaining $22M. but the sox traded not one but two well regarded pitching prospects and a useful outfielder – potentially 18 years of cost-controlled production – for one year of nick swisher and whatever the crap pile known as wilson jhonny marquez produces. that, my friend, is fucking blowing it.

Ah, you have to leave Oakland out of it.
Otherwise why not wait until we see how our “haul” from the Spanks turns out, or to see how Oakland’s young guys do? Remains to be seen.

because the white sox traded high value. and they should have high value in return.
the white sox scouts may be good. but they ain’t that good. i give points for ex post analysis of trades, too. but it still remains that the white sox traded high value – and what is still largely high value – for what is currently priced at low value.
