PHOENIX -- The Dodgers, apparently uncertain they can work a deal for second baseman Orlando Hudson, have also begun talks with free-agent infielder Orlando Cabrera.
Cabrera, a two-time Gold Glove shortstop, told the club he would be willing to move to second base, where Blake DeWitt came to camp as the heir apparent to the retired Jeff Kent. Shortstop is locked up by Rafael Furcal, who signed a three-year deal, although Cabrera would provide insurance if Furcal was injured again.

Depending on how the market went today. But in all seriousness I’d think it’s worth a fair amount of money to get that draft pick? I’d guess that’s against the rules but this isn’t a situation we’ve seen much of before.

God only knows

You can make a strong case that we’re going into a death spiral Depression – or they’re going to grossly overstimulate things and ignite an inflation. The way they’re throwing around a $tril here and a $tril there and what the hell how about another trillion… I’d lean toward inflation.

I'd lean heavily towards that.

Near term, GLD looks overbought (panic buying). In another 6-12 months I like it higher – a lot. I agree with Ray Davio – gold should be a great performing asset class, and stocks by year-end should be “the buy of the century” once they go down another 20-25%.

wow.

curious what you think the main driving factors behind that rise is/will be. i piled into gold sometime in october or november (that’s how awesome a trader i am, i don’t know when i did it) on the thinking that all this shit is either going to cause deflation or inflation and either way gold was a good spot to be in.

by larry on Feb 20, 2009 11:31 AM CST up reply actions

inflation's a good bet IMO

All this debt the feds are taking on, the easiest way to pay it off is to inflate and pay off the debt with devalued dollars. Worked great for Weimar Germany.

Lot of news out there about possible deflation this year

CPI barely rose in January – worst since 1955. Inflation is dipping near zero, and with the Fed already cutting rates to as low as they can…deflation is a real possibility out there.

I see it if we don’t start pulling out of the recession in 2009, deflation will most likely occur.

"Jenks, who was never afraid to say "no" to a hamburger..."

inflation's the lesser of two evils

that’s why they’re throwing ungodly amounts of money at this thing. The sums are just staggering – the $20bil they toss at GM is tip money.

by ChicagoPete on Feb 20, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

I'd even go one further.

Higher-than-usual inflation would probably be a good thing at this point. It solves the current liquidity trap by encouraging people to buy now because things are going to be more expensive next year, and it really helps the housing market. Nominal prices will stabilize and improve, even as real values continue to fall, but most of the foreclosure and walk-away problems are related to nominal loan-to-value issues, not real dollar drops.

by BridgeportJoe on Feb 20, 2009 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

It seems like the only way out of the current mess, it solves a lot of short term problems. We’ll deal with the long term ramifications later, it’s the American way by God!

Being a landlord’s not a bad way to go in an inflationary environment. Your mortgage is fixed, and you can jack your rents pretty nice every year. Pay your bank back over 30yrs with confederate dollars.

Well, sure.

As long as tax increases are not outstripping inflation (watch for that later) you’re OK. And that’s assuming the underlying asset value remains stable – which ain’t gonna happen for awhile.

People tend to forget Accounting 101

when it comes to real estate, because they usually view it as a residence. But RE is an asset, and like any other asset its value is based upon the income it can generate. If inflation goes up, rents go up – and RE will follow. It’s just illiquid as hell in an inflationary environment because the mortgage rates go so high.

Just my opinion

But I’ve always liked RE, and I’ve had long discussions with people who owned investment RE in Chicago during the inflation of the 1970s. They did very well for themselves when the dust settled – the big problem was you can’t unload anything. You really need to have the stomach for it.

wasn't the problem sort of caused by lots of people viewing their home as an asset instead of where they live?

and also piling into speculation on condos and such. not saying you’re completely off of it – investment property is often a good idea and, if you’re buying now and in it for the long term, maybe a great one.

by Grinder in Training on Feb 20, 2009 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

that's part of the problem

You can’t buy a condo for $600,000 when the going rent for the unit is $2000/mo. The rents will never support that price – but that didn’t stop people from paying $600k during the RE boom, they just thought price appreciation would bail them out.

So in a scenario like you describe, who’s the winners out of all this? I’m not assuming its a zero-sum game, but I’m curious about what the effects on countries like China that own a lot of US debt. What Pete (hello Pete) refers to

“The way they’re throwing around a $tril here and a $tril there.”

This is a world wide problem.

There are very, very few attractive investments currentlywith the dire outlook.

You can hold it in your hand.

In 1967, Alan Greenspan once wrote an article called Gold and Economic Freedom. He wrote that:

An almost hysterical antagonism toward the gold standard is one issue which unites statists of all persuasions. They seem to sense – perhaps more clearly and subtly than many consistent defenders of laissez-faire – that gold and economic freedom are inseparable, that the gold standard is an instrument of laissez-faire and that each implies and requires the other… This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists’ tirades against gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights.

OT food thread

a couple of weeks ago larry posted that he liked corned beef, my fishing attempts to get a reaction by saying I wouldn’t give it to Stan typically failed. I quite like corned beef, especially with English mustard and some pickles.
Anyway, uncle Wu tries to get the odd dig in against the food we eat in Blighty, but I love good food and have never been to the US so I am genuinely interested in what you are eating or have eaten for lunch today.

I could do a poll but I’m way out of dasox313’s league, something like 1) Cheeseburgers 2) Hot Dogs 3) anything else.

My lunch is a 6 mile run.

Tempo day today — I’ll try to hit 6:35 pace. It’s not that much faster than my target marathon pace in the fall (ideally, you want to be about 30 seconds faster per mile through 10 miles, not 15 through 6), but (1) the fall is a long way away, (2) 6:35 at altitude is the same thing as 6:20 at sea level, and (3) I’m still 10-15 pounds over racing weight.

I’ll have some beef jerky and maybe a few potato chips for lunch afterwards.

Just checked the label.

Both sugar and brown sugar are ingredients, but the 2 oz. strip only has 2 g of sugar.

(And I’m not too concerned with sugar intake in any event. My weight depends much more on mileage than calories. Once I’m back up to the 65-75 mpw range, I’ll be back down in the mid-140s.)

By the way...

I’ve got to take issue with this. Sugar is frequently added to meat with great results. BBQ outside of North Carolina is a good example, as is many types of Chinese (both Americanized and authentic). You don’t see the flavor combination with beef as much, but even then, there are some good bourbon based marinades that really emphasize sweetness.

We ate at a surprisingly cheap French place in Denver a few weeks ago ($80 for mussles and pomme fritte, two dinners, two Ricards, and a modest bottle of wine). I had rabbit with a pretty good sweet sauce. (Prof. Dr. Mrs. Joe had the coq au vin — really underseasoned, but for those prices, we’ll give it a second chance).

Ham and pineapple is another great combination.

We usually make/order extra rice to save for a few days to dry it out and then do fried rice. Ham, pineapple, egg, green onion and maybe broccoli is my favorite. Though if I have some duck or goose* lying around, I’ll cut the ham and the egg.

  • We usually do a goose for Thanksgiving and Christmas — much tastier than turkey, provided that you scald it a few days beforehand to loosen up the fat. But the leftovers are glorious. I had broccoli and goose on frozen pizza a few days after Christmas this year. Best pizza I had in 2008.

I don't know how many is "too many"

But there’s one to few, at least in Denver.

(And actually, the best French place in Chicago is on the Southside — Chez Joel on Taylor and Racine. It’s owned by a couple of Morrocan brothers, and the classical French food has a very subtle North African influence.)

by homesickalien on Feb 20, 2009 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

I'd dispute the French/Vietnamese classification

It’s really just plain Vietnamese with better quality ingredients. The space is nice. The food is really mediocre, though Chicago isn’t the best for Vietnamese, so you could certainly do worse. I’d go to a good Thai place (I liked Opart) and then hit Rush/Division for drinks. You can even go to the Le Colonial bar if you’d like.

by BridgeportJoe on Feb 20, 2009 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I went there once and actually sat at the bar because it was a crowded Saturday night.

I figured the quality was not up to the price, but having little to compare it to, I didn’t really know for certain.

Since moving West, I’ve been introduced to lots of better quality Thai food, namely. And before moving here, I can’t really recall ever having straight up Vietnamese food.

If I ever come home for a trip and feel like something other than pizza and dogs, I’ll remember your suggestion of Opart, thanks.

In Chicago?

I always hit the Fleet Feet on Wells and North (I think — it was in Old Town regardless), but I was in the distinct minority. Most people I ran with preferred Universal Soul further north. Either one should be sufficient for what you need — someone who knows what they are doing to watch you and recommend a particular shoe based on your gait.

I’m really stoked because I have a pair of the new Mizuno Wade Rider 12s, and they correct the toe box issues that mader the 11s unusable for me.

Kayano

Great shoe if you need stability support. Not so much if you are a neutral runner like me. And at those prices, you should be sure.

by BridgeportJoe on Feb 20, 2009 1:44 PM CST up reply actions

and that's exactly why

I need to go to somewhere where they know what the heck all that means. I’m guessing stability will likely be for me rather than neutral based on what I’ve read. I definitely don’t have a ‘runners build’.

by southsideirish on Feb 20, 2009 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

Stability support

Means that the shoe stops your foot from under or over pronating (i.e., rolling in or out) when you push off. This can lead to arch problems and shin splints. Neutral just means that there isn’t any perceptible roll.

Your weight/build really shouldn’t have much to do with pronation, though it certainly would exacerbate any problems (i.e., you’d get hurt quicker) if you are heavier. The one thing to look for if that’s the case is heavier cushioning. Air Pegasus is a good shoe for that, as are Adidas Supernova Cushions.

by BridgeportJoe on Feb 20, 2009 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

if this much attention to detail went into arch support for soccer cleats

Depends on pronation.

Off the top of my head, I’d recommend something from the Adidas Supernova line, or Air Pegasus if you are more neutral. Kayanos are great shoes if you underpronate, but frankly, they are a bit pricey for 13 miles a week.

It has to do with which way your toes point

If they tend to point in then you underpronate; if they point out, it’s overpronating. I’ve got really flat feet and overpronate a ton so I use the Brooks Beast (with SuperFeet inserts), and the shoes have actually helped a lot. I imagine I’ve bought myself an extra, three, four days before I’ll need to start taking shots for arthritis one day.

At a store like Fleet Feet or Universal Sole you often be dealing with a pretty knowledgeable staff who’ll take a good look at your foot and your stride and give you a decent assessment of what sort of shoe to look for. And as retail outfit goes they tend to be good people – on a few occasions they have talked me into a more effective but cheaper shoe. But if you’re regularly going 13 miles/week and your knees bother you, it’s probably worth the time to visit a place like this.

Also try dirt or grass.

It really, really helps. A lot of elite runners can’t run on concrete by their early 30s. There’s actually a community of them out here NW of Boulder because the area they live in (technically part of Nederland) has mostly dirt roads.

by BridgeportJoe on Feb 20, 2009 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

The only problem with that...

Is that the asphalt bike trail right next to it is so much faster and “easier” (i.e., less strenuous) to run on, and it takes a lot of willpower to pick the gravel.

Little slower than I’d like (6:40/mile), but I was running into a 20-30 mph headwind for a third of the run. That probably cost me 25 seconds per mile, and then I only get about 10 seconds back running with the wind — so a net time drag of 30 seconds, which puts me right where I wanted to be.

This is why I love runners.

Narcissistic to the core. Like we care about your splits. Do you keep a running journal too, Joe? (My wife does.)

;)

Actually...

I don’t except for marathon ramp up (approximately three months before the marathon), where I need to make sure I put in enough miles. From now until July or so, I’ll have a good idea of the types of workouts I want to do in a given week (e.g., Monday tempo, Wednesday hills, Thursday medium-long, Saturday intervals), but I won’t really keep track of them.

by BridgeportJoe on Feb 20, 2009 3:54 PM CST up reply actions

Not bad

A 22:30ish 5k isn’t bad for an 11 year-old. My first one was around 20:30 — but I think I was 13 or so.

My PR is a 15:55 my freshman year of college. I was so psyched that I was running 30 seconds below my high school times. Then I realized that the leaders had lapped me by the 10th lap, and the only people I beat were a couple of half milers who were running up a distance to develop their stamina. I didn’t run my sophmore year.

That's my best as well

give or take a second or two…. Though I peaked mid-HS…

by The Cheat on Feb 20, 2009 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

It's funny

When I realized that a good high school runner plus a ton of mileage equals a really crappy college runner, I quit running for nearly a decade. I should have gone on to the marathon at that point. I never would have been great — my guess is that I would have peaked around 2:35 or so in my late 20s, maybe sub-2:30 if I really took to 100+ mile weeks — but that would have been so much easier (and more fun) than scratching and clawing to be a sub-3:00 guy in my mid 30s.

by BridgeportJoe on Feb 20, 2009 5:51 PM CST up reply actions

and I was never able to do anything beyond 5k

months after my first 5k, I tried a 10k and failed miserably — It was under an hour, but yeah, it was slow.

Ran the Bix once in HS, died w/ about 2.5miles to go

Well, that's nice.

Guess San Fran in July is a no-go then?

HA, I was just kidd-....er.....being nice.

If San Fran doesn’t happen, it’s because I’m in Chicago around that time. After the debacle that was “snow in Seattle,” my vacation days are down to THREE until October.

Obviously, I need to use that sparingly and a trip home to see the Sox/family/friends (in that order, hehe) is priority. I would still like to get to San Fran. Still might happen….I have not given it up entirely! Just might be in Chicago for my bday weekend now….

...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.

Next Off Topic Topic

Where should I go skiing tomorrow? Prof. Dr. Mrs. Joe and the kid will be coming but not skiing, so there needs to be reasonably interesting nonskiing stuff to do. I’m tentatively thinking Breckenridge (Vail is too crowded, and there isn’t enough stuff other than skiing at Keystone) but could be talked into Crested Butte. Aspen and Steamboat are too far for a day trip.

I would like to start a contest:

What is Joe’s next OT? My 2 cents:

1. Anyone know a good CPA who can hide money?
2. Anyone know a good mechanic who can handle Italian cars?
3. Anyone know a good place to stay in Banff and/or Zurich?
4. Anyone have a good referral for a hot au pair? Ours quit to go on the “Girls Gone Wild” tour.
5. How much should you tip a masseuse that comes to the house 3 times/week?

Well...

Our car is German, and our place in the Alps is actually in Bardonecchia (just on the Italian side of the France-Italy border, where they have the halfpipe events in 2006; long story short: I was very lucky to hook up with Prof. Dr. Mrs. Joe). And our family income isn’t exactly big enough to need hiding at the moment.

But if anyone has any input on 4 and 5, I’m all ears.

I should say...

In fairness, our car is only German in the sense that a Fiat Panda is Italian, and the Bardonecchia condo, while very nice, is a shared family place that I get to go to about once every three years or so. (Prof. Dr. Mrs. Joe goes to Italy about once a year on business, so she gets there much more often). All of THAT said, it’s a ton of fun there. Great for hill work.

And my luxurious skiing trip tomorrow will consist of loading a sleeping three year-old in the car at 5:30 AM to beat the traffic on I-70, and then heading back after a single post-lunch run to beat the return traffic.

We surely are approaching Opening Day.

TAEG in fine form. Rec’d, as usal, for The Recap. (Should’ve waited for the Joe narcissism to manifest itself more, in order for the last 1% of perfection, but we all know the prefect is the enemy of the good.)

Oh look, the Cheaplaffs have moved into the Brighton condo.

''Those guys deserve a little slack,'' Konerko said. ''And I know that no one deserves slack when you are judged in the end because that's just professional sports, and you will always get hammered if you don't do well. But as far as going into a season, [Williams has] kind of earned the right to have everyone say, 'Well, let's wait and see.' I think he's earned that.''

Never heard of thsi befor last night.

I was discussing a mlb.com piece that Merkin wrote and the fellow smiled and asked “do you know what a Merkin is?”

No

Per urbandictionary,

merkin: A pubic Toupee

Pretty desperate, IYAM.

This fellow knows Getz and family and it looks like BA will have an eager late night Rush St. companion.
