Mancow: Sox Fans Not As Educated

I'm sure many of you are aware that Mancow described South Siders as the "less-educated", "salt-of the earth" Sox fans; a perfect foil to the "educated" Cubs fans on the North side.  See the clip from 'No Reservations' here:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5ro_wG7EyI (minute 3:08)

While it's clearly not worth a whole lot of time specifically addressing such cliche-laden drivel, I do wonder if the exact opposite is true:  Are Sox fans in 2009, on average, more educated than Cubs fans?  It certainly seems that the perception is slowly changing with highly wonky, high-profile fans like President Obama and Nate Silver (I can already feel the love).  Or are they?  Does anyone give a s*it about any of this?  And more importantly, where can I that sandwch?

SouthSideSox is a community driven site. As such, users are able to express their thoughts and opinions in a FanPost, such as this one, which represents the views of this particular fan, but not necessarily the entire community or SouthSideSox editors.

Mancow's still around?

I probably haven’t thought of him in five years. Maybe more.

He's Marriotti for airwaves

I think he’s back on the air in chicago now, but it was after a long hiatus.

Disappointed that Bourdain, who I like, felt the need to peddle his wares on that show (whatever it is).

I'm on the side of "no one gives a shit"

Although I think everyone should watch the video because No Reservation is an awesome show. I think Cubs and Sox fans should unite and realize they’re all fucking retarded for liking the Bears.

Bourdain did not seem very impressed with the food he got.

but he will go to India, eat monkey brains, and rave about it.

So, if I am reading the two options correctly . . .
we can either a) keep dye or b) trade dye . . . is that you Phil Rogers?

Wow. I never knew I'd get an opportunity to express my deepest of disdains for Mancow, to a public-ish audience.

I hate that fucking assclown.

That aside, I don’t think his comment here should be taken as an insult. He’s right, in a way, although it sounds a little bad. (And it’s that fucking assclown anyway, so that doesn’t help).

Besides, I’d take common sense over a degree any day, no diggity.

I don't believe that is true.

All sox fans did not grow up in Pilsen. Many of them are from the western and south western suburbs such as Hinsdale, Bolingbrook, Naperville, and Plainfield… Not exactly poverty ridden towns.

The word "irrelevant" is woefully insufficient to express Mancow Muller's lack of relevance.

I’m sure there is a word in German that would do the trick; probably something really long ending with “aucccchh” and a bunch of u’s with dots on top scattered in the middle.

Not to be a smartass

But I think it depends on what you mean by “average.” My guess is that the median Sox fan is more educated, but the Cubs fans have a higher mean level of education.

If their fans were so “educated”, then why do they root for the cubs?

Yeah, and it's not that great.

I love Bourdain but this segment was terrible. Mancow plus a really dumb idea for a sandwich right in the middle of a great episode.

And…the edible menu is at Moto. You should go there if $300 isn’t too much for you to spend for just yourself.

If you have nothing to add to the discussion. Continue sniffing glue.

continuing that train of thought, for anyone that's got $300+ to burn on their dinner alone

i’d highly recommend craftsteak in vegas. it’s at the mgm, and the food is unbelievable. obviously it ought to be at that price, but i will say that my guilt over eating there was nearly nothing after the delicious meal i had.

Sox fans...

White Sox fans, that is, seem to be mostly black people around here. In fact, I have only run into a single white White Sox fan my entire time in SC. And he was born and raised on the South Side.

When was it that rappers started wearing White Sox hats in their videos? When did it become the cool thing?

So, to reiterate, my observation is that White Sox fans down here are black folk. You can insert whatever stereotype you want here, I won’t.

Kinda interesting. What rappers then were wearing them? I can’t think of many to come out of Chicago.

It was the same thing with Michigan and the Fab Five during the 90s

Every black kid in Chicago was wearing the glorious Block M hat. For fun I used to ask while waiting on the el platform, “Heyyyyyyyy, did you go to Michigan too – which dorm were you in?” After getting a stunned look in reply and an awkward silence, it usually resulted in an interesting conversation.

''Those guys deserve a little slack,'' Konerko said. ''And I know that no one deserves slack when you are judged in the end because that's just professional sports, and you will always get hammered if you don't do well. Ah, nice.

That is the kind of thing I was looking for when I googled rappers and white sox hats.

It doesn’t really help the White Sox image with the upper class white folk, IMO.

There's a petition to get him off the airwaves in Green Bay...cause he sucks

Yeah, us Wisconsinites don’t like morning talk shows…at all.

Seriously, out of all the radio names you could have picked, I wonder why he thought “Mancow” was a good one?

I remember the Sun-TImes did some sort of polling on this question a couple of years

ago. I’m not sure who did the polling, but IIRC, the end result was that the two fanbases the average Sox and Cubs fans were about equal in education and income.

I don't really recall the details.

I believe the Sun Times conducted a telehpone survey of the Chicagoland area and asked the respondents to self identify as either Cubs or Sox fans.

by dtv on Feb 22, 2009 4:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I can't find the article to which you're referring

but here are some people discussing it. Apparently the difference in income was found to be $2,000, but that doesn’t answer shortkid’s question. Maybe someone else with more time and more Google skillz can find the article.

well,

I’m pretty sure he was talking about quality of schools and general level of education, and he was making more of a distinction between the North and South sides of the city. He was right that blue collar, lower-class neighborhoods typically have lower levels of education, lower levels of income and, as a result, schools with less money. The implications of such statistics is debatable — it’s difficult and, well, wrong to make value judgments (i.e. “North siders are better than South siders because they make more money”). It’s hard to tell whether or not Mancow’s comments were veiled classism (or even racism, based on the perceived racial disparities between the two sides of city), or whether he was just making an honest observation. I’d like to think his radio personality is just a character, but you never know… Bourdain seemed to like him, at least.

Why he made the connection to baseball fans, I don’t know. Being a Sox fan doesn’t automatically mean you’re a factory worker from Bridgeport, and being a Cubs fans doesn’t mean you’re necessarily a trust fund baby living in a high-rise apartment in Lincoln Park. The same could be said for stereotypes of “North-sider” and “South-sider,” but at least those labels are determined by geographical location — giving them slightly more justification — and not an arbitrary sports team preference.

If Bourdain asked me that question, I’d simply reply: “Latitude.” Make all the sweeping generalizations you like, but you’ll never be able to categorize an entire half of one of the largest cities into the world.
