Crede agrees to deal with Twins
Joe Crede was a fan favorite among White Sox fans for 6 1/2 seasons.
Now he will be playing for one of the Sox's biggest enemies.
Crede, 30, agreed to terms Friday night with the Minnesota Twins, according to a major-league source.
edit by larry 2/21 at 11:15am:
The Twins will sign Crede to one-year deal with a base salary of $2.5 million with the chance to earn $7 million in appearance bonuses. The bonuses begin once Crede reaches 250 plate appearances and tops out at $7 million when he makes his 525th plate appearance.

My thoughts
Crede on the Twins is gonna hurt. But it’ll only be temporary.
They were probably a better team than the Sox without him. With him, they’re clearly better, until May when he goes on the DL again.
Seriously though, he’ll either play well enough to hurt the Sox and price himself outside of the Twins’ means in the future. Or he’ll get hurt, and be a baseball vagabond for the rest of his career.
The difference in the greetings Crede receives at USCF as a Twin compared to that which AJ receives in the Terrordome will be stark.

There will probably be some idiots who will boo him just because he’s playing for the Twins, but most fans will applaud.

Pitcher Mark Buehrle joked that the Sox would rag on Crede from their third base dugout when he comes to U.S. Cellular Field on April 10.
"I’m sure when they come to town and he’s 20 feet away from our dugout, I’m sure he’s going to get hounded and harassed a little bit," pitcher Mark Buehrle said. "I think (Paul) Konerko said he’s going to have a good time with him. I’m sure we’ll try to get his attention and have some fun with him."

25 to 1
Chicago White Sox (25-to-1) – It’s kind of odd to see a team that played as well as the White Sox did last year in the third tier. Obviously the oddsmakers don’t think that the Sox’s psyche will hold up for a full season to defend their Central title. I don’t know if I agree with them. I think this could be a really strong value play.

quentin article from merkin
“What I could tell you, without getting Carlos mad or ruining his tough guy image, is that the media has a misconception or the wrong perception of what he’s really like,” said White Sox center fielder Brian Anderson, who played against Quentin while at the University of Arizona. “Carlos is so intense, and takes baseball very seriously, which is good. But honestly, Carlos is just a goofball.”
Anderson gave an example of the latter through “verbal joking battles” between Quentin and Joe Crede on the team plane last year, where both parties “had the maturity level of seventh graders when they got into it.” Fields added that Quentin has a dry sense of humor that most people don’t see, a wit that Fields is getting an up-close look at presently.

For clarification
I’m referring specifically to the use of “honeys,” and not the general “BA is a sexthirsty sexhound” thing.
On March 7, 2006, in a Cowley story about Anderson, BA said:
``The first reason I play this game is because I want to win,‘’ Anderson insisted Monday. ``I want to be the best baseball player I can be, but I want my team to be the best. Second comes the financial aspect, where I can help take care of my family.’‘
And three?
``Three … yeah, three is the honeys ,’’ Anderson said with a smirk as he primped his blond locks in jest. ``No doubt, the honeys are No. 3.’’
And then Cowley ran with it. April of 2007, Cowley then wrote:
Rowand would run through a wall because he was told to. Anderson would run through a wall because it seemed fun and could land him a few ‘honeys’ along the way.
That’s my knowledge of the situation. And I don’t know if I should be embarrassed.

From talking to Kelly Thesier, our intrepid Twins’ beat reporter, it sounds as if Crede’s afternoon press conference in Florida is going to be delayed a bit. So, I decided to take some time to come up with three of the top clutch plays made by one of the most clutch players in the White Sox organization. See if you agree.
1) October 12, 2005: A.J. Pierzynski gets the lion’s share of attention for his dash to first base after an apparent dropped third strike called against Angels catcher Josh Paul. But it was Crede’s two-out double off of reliever Kelvim Escobar that scored pinch-runner Pablo Ozuna with the game-winner, evening the American League Championship Series at one game apiece. Crede didn’t receive any postseason awards, but he was as valuable as anyone on the roster from the start of the playoffs right on through the sweep of the Astros in the World Series.
2) September 20, 2005: The Indians had shaved a 15-game-deficit on Aug. 1 in the AL Central to 2 1/2 games on Sept. 20. Crede made sure it got no closer on this night, launching a walk-off home run against David Riske leading off the bottom of the 10th.
3) April 18, 2007: Mark Buehrle’s no-hitter against the Rangers was punctuated by Crede’s defensive gem on Gerald Laird’s slow-roller to end the game. It was one of the countless tough plays Crede made look easy.

crede
When I first discussed the rumors of Crede to the Twins back in late December on The Score 670, the talk in the Twin Cities was he would play third more often on the road, while at home he would see some time in the DH spot.

i would definitely not do this.
Crede’s biggest asset by far is his glove, even more so on turf where presumably the GBBABIP is higher. Not to mention, his contract is totally incentivized, so if he doesn’t make it, you don’t have to pay him. The alternatives to Crede at third are Buscher and…Harris, I guess. Crede is 20 runs better over 150 games than both. On the other hand, the Twins have a glut of DH options.

do you mean from Credes perspective or the Twins?
sorry if it sounds a dumb question, but as he has a contract based on appearances a good reason for the Twins to do this would be to get out of ponying up non?

Also...
he’s not a good enough hitter to justify as a DH at all. If he’s not contributing with the glove, he’s not worth having around. There’s a reason Williams didn’t even talk to Crede.
If the Twins get the 2006 Joe Crede, this is a good deal for them. But I’d be willing to bet that that guy is gone for good.

well it's a good deal for them either way.
2006 Crede means they win the division. Anything less and they still certainly could.

Agreed
It’s going to be us and them again…just you watch

Meh.
Best case scenario at this point, Crede plays a league-average third base and gets paid market value for that. And that’s best-case scenario – there’s at least a decent chance that they’re flushing a couple million down the toilet.
I salute Scott Boras – Crede got a much better deal than I thought he would. I wouldn’t give him more than a minor league contract and an NRI.
by The Jerry Royster Experience on Feb 21, 2009 9:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
reasonable best case scenario:
5 bRAA + 2.5 pos adj + 10 dRAA over 150 games.
that’s ~2 wins above average and ~3 above Buscher. that’s 2.3M/win, which less than half of what paid out on last year’s market.
Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.
by colintj on Feb 21, 2009 9:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
not to mention that the average dollars paid out on this contract (that is, assume he's as likely
to get 250 PAs as 700) is equal to what he got in his last year of arb. in what sense isn’t this a deal worth making for the Twins? everything is on their terms. if he isn’t healthy, they don’t have to pay. and if he’s healthy, he’s an above average 3B. they dictate playing time too. how could you possibly salute Scott Boras?
Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.
by colintj on Feb 21, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Because he gets $2 million guaranteed.
The Twins were essentially bidding against themselves. Anything more than league minimum is a win for Crede.

i have no idea what would make you think that.

if they get anything other than 2007 joe crede this is a good deal.
defense is worth something, you know. a lot of something when it’s joe crede.
by larry on Feb 21, 2009 10:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
from the Twins perspective
this would give them the guaranteed least bang for their buck.

I guess I've never really been attatched to players only teams (except Frank)
Crede going to the Twins does nothing for me. I hope he falls on his ass, but only so that Sox have a better shot at the division.
Thanks for your time here Joe.

agreed
this was much less painful than losing Aaron. I’m usually much less hurt by a free agent loss than a trade. I wouldn’t feel bad about a trade if I’m resigned to it, like I was with Buehrle, JD, and Garland. Of course, the former two were extended.
How awful would it have been if the White Sox consented to the Red Sox’s lowball offers in 07? The division would have been lost last year and there would be no long-term salvage.
by Daniel Berlyn on Feb 21, 2009 7:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
can you remind me of the suspected trade offer?

I think it was wily mo pena and craig hansen for JD
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

well i was firmly on the "dye for wily mo pena" bandwagon. not sure how I feel about that now
prolly glad it didn’t happen, although willy mo, quentin and swisher would have been a very intersting outfield in 2009. Bad defence, but perhaps very great offense.
by madvillian on Feb 21, 2009 7:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
but bad defense and offense for sure in 2008
which is more than reason enough to be glad that it didn’t go down.

Finally got to flip through BP's 2009 book
I don’t have much to add to what’s already been posted, but they really seem to like Flowers a good deal — I think there’s a quote saying that his bat will, in fact, play at first. If it works out where he is able to stick behind the plate for even a couple of years, the Sox should have quite the luxury of a plus-plus offensive catcher.
And the Jerry Owens projection! Tough not to LOL at the projected ~.560 OPS.

After a couple years of this, I've started tempering my expectations when PECOTA
picks out someone it really likes. Maybe if Wieters explodes like PECOTA says I’ll start giving more credence.

seems a bit much

Astros C Hall out with torn labrum
Houston Astros catcher Toby Hall will miss at least a month after an MRI revealed a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
Hall was expected to compete for the two catcher spots on the major league roster, but the injury serves a major setback for the 33-year-old.

LOL
So a torn labrum, an injury suffered in March of ’07 while playing 1B, is a “major setback?”

so we can add houston to the teams that don't do appropriate medicals before signing players.
here’s a tip: MRI on a known, past injury is a good idea. and it doesn’t cost much.
by larry on Feb 21, 2009 10:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
how much did that cost them?
Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.
by colintj on Feb 21, 2009 11:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
well, that article says he'll be out a month. so, assuming truth, not much.
i’m not saying a team should be MRIing every player they’re signing to a minor league deal but checking out his shoulder with something a little more extensive than a range of motion test seems like a good idea. what if he required surgey? all of the sudden a guy you signed to a presumably cheap minor league deal is running up medical bills and rehab, all because you didn’t want to spend what is chump change.
by larry on Feb 21, 2009 11:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
i definitely agree. it's straight up incompetence to avoid doing what is obvious
and cheap. and it’s pretty much what we’d expect from an organization like the astros, where wade plays yes man to mclane.

got his contract voided - so perhaps there was something about misrepresentation from hall's side.
by the way, i’m glad they realized what i said two years ago:
“He’s had this issue. He dislocated this shoulder back in the latter parts of spring training in 2007 with the White Sox and never had it surgically repaired. But the recommendation is at this point that in order for him to continue his career at the level he wants to continue it to go ahead not waste time and get the surgery done.”
by larry on Feb 22, 2009 10:51 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
apparently the astros want us to pay for it
But Frank Thomas was always his own guy, he always lived by some sort of code that wasn’t especially clear to anyone but him.
by U-God on Feb 22, 2009 2:03 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
um, this is a head scratcher, how could this be the responsibility of the white sox?
by onlysoxfaninboston on Feb 22, 2009 2:09 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
a team is responsible for the medical care of their players.
including if the injury was sustained prior to the expiration of a contract but still requires attention afterwards. you don’t get to skirt out on medical care just because you buy out a guy. i imagine there could be a fight over this considering hall was signed last month and i suppose one could argue about when the injury occurred or what the astros knew when they signed him.
