the marquez era begins!

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

Hairy situation
The Sox have tried everything they could with reliever Mike MacDougal -short of leaving him at another team’s doorstep, ringing the doorbell and running – but it would seem that something has to give.

The best-case scenario is that the right-hander shows enough in camp to draw interest from another team. MacDougal is in the final year of a three-year extension he signed in 2006 and will make $2.65 million this year.

Either way, pitching coach Don Cooper is hoping for some sort of life from MacDougal.

’’He’s throwing the ball pretty good,‘’ Cooper said. ’’The big knock on Mike is he might not be able to maintain focus and stay under control, and then he gets a wild hair up his (butt) from time to time. But when he does throw it over, his two pitches, he does get good results. Whether it’s a ground ball or whatever, he can get people out. He will be getting some extended outings.’’

I have to say this every year

all strikeouts are 3-pitch strikeouts,
all balls in play are first pitch
all walks are 4-pitch walks

It’s the easiest way to enter the end-data correctly

I suppose it's not so bad...

given that their first-round pick is protected.

I was going to make fun of them for giving so much money to guys like Cruz and Farnsworth, but there’s something to be said for putting a watchable product on the field. Sure, they won’t make the playoffs, or even contend, but at least there’s a good chance they won’t be unwatchably bad.

And none of those contracts are going to prevent them from doing something down the road when they might actually be good.

Building a cheap bullpen was Moore's one consistent strength, though

So it’s nice to see them squander an edge.

coop on columbus
“I’ll tell you what we are talking about,” Cooper said. "This is the second half of his career, and Bartolo is now trying to prove he can go from a pure power guy to a guy who still can pitch with real solid stuff.

"Remember, there’s nothing he can’t do with a baseball. He can cut it, slice it and dice it. He’s like Popeil’s pocket pitcher. He can do it all. He might be able to even core an apple.

“If he gets healthy, then you got a chance to win ballgames on that fourth or fifth day. He’s a proven guy, and we all know he knows how to pitch. He certainly has the heart and the [guts].”
