White Sox Probable Lineup

  1. Jerry Owens (CF)
  2. AJ Pierzynski (C)
  3. Carlos Quentin (LF)
  4. Jim Thome (DH)
  5. Jermaine Dye (RF)
  6. Paul Konerko (1B)
  7. Alexei Ramirez (SS)
  8. Josh Fields (3B)
  9. Chris Getz (2B)

The Thome/Dye/Konerko trio will likely move around based largely on health. I could also see Getz moved to the 8th spot to avoid having two relatively inexperienced left-handers back-to-back, and three in a row.

As we've discussed before, AJ is probably the player the Sox can least afford to lose. And last year at this time, many of us thought Carlos Quentin was the key to the Sox season. I had a similar thought this year regarding one of the new probable starters. Wondering if you all thought the same.

Hottest AL Central Fan?

More Hardball wants to know who has the hottest fans in baseball. We’ll be running a set of posts over the following weeks featuring images of each teams’ hotties, with a voting poll to crown a champion. We’re started with the AL East and we’re now moving on to the AL Central. Sticking true to Major League Baseball’s roots, there will be an eight team playoff system where the winners of each division square off with the addition of a wild card team to determine who wins the pennant and represents each league in the World Series of Hotness.

Fields

Fields ceiling is much higher than the other two. If he has a Quentin type breakout year (.265 30 HR 95 RBI) the sox will be in business. If he comes out and hits .190 through May the Sox will be in trouble.

Please tell me that you were kidding when you wrote that piece about fields…. Hoping Fields has a Quentin like year is about as likely as the Getz Pedroia….

We didn’t rely on offense from 3rd base last year…. anything above 250 and 18 homers with average defense from fields i will consider a big bonus…

Who gives a shit about Fields hitting 30 home runs...?

Really…?
Anyone at all..?

He hit 23 two years ago….. Played piss pour defense Struck out an amazing 33.5% of the time and had an obp of 308…

One article and some ass kissing to assistant coaches and he’s going to be the next Carlos Quentin all of the sudden.

Fields minor league strike out rate is still right around 30% 512k’s 1685 at bats…..

Oh and the club believes in him so much they just bought an 8 million dollar prospect.

He can really hit a breaking ball. It just doesn’t seem like people are going to throw him breaking ball strikes….. He lacks plate discipline and the ability to hit a fastball.

I think comparing him to Quentin is a huge stretch.

I am more concerned with his defense….. I am sure playing with Cora’s balls all winter has gotten him into Ozzie’s good graces..

I think the Q comparison

Was in relation to how Q all the sudden went on an offensive rampage throughout the league, I think he was saying hopefully Fields can follow in those footsteps. And since we have seen Fields power, it’s not totally outlandish.

by JoeCoolMan24 on Feb 3, 2009 9:45 AM CST up reply actions

its pretty outlandish

Quentin was considered a top prospect in all of baseball before he got hurt and shuffled back.

Fields cracked the top 5 in the Sox organization. Can he hit 30 at the cell? Sure why not. Will he have 180+ strikeouts to go with it? Yeah, probably.

I didn't compare him to Quentin.

I really am not a fan of Fields. However, he did show off his power in 07… If he could progress a little even farther than that it would mean good things. I am just saying if he has a Quentin type break out season it would have a huge impact on the team.

Any time you have a prospect/unknown put up those kind of numbers it would have a “huge impact” on the team.

Owens.

It all starts at the top. Pods had a decent 2005 – we won. We’ve been searching since – not as successful. And we need someone with range to cover the lard in the OF. Owens tanks, we’re toast no matter how brilliant the other 2 are.

I could

by jc2313 on Feb 3, 2009 9:46 AM CST up reply actions

We had better defense last year (I am projecting '09's to be worse, obviously).

We won a championship with a decent person at the order. We eked out a division with the wrong guy leading off. I maintain it will be easier to replace a 2B or 3B’s stick. We have a gaping hole in CF and at the top of the order. If Owens improves what we had last year (not hard) it will be magnified in a positive way.

Kind of agree . . .

I just don’t think the difference between Podsednik and Cabrera leading off is the difference between winning a championship and eeking out a division. The probability that Owens will even provide what Cabrera did out of the leadoff spot is low. The best bet to increase value in CF is Anderson because you can at least rely on + defense to offset a weak bat.

by jc2313 on Feb 3, 2009 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

I am very aware of JO's limits and agree with you.

I’m looking at the question from a “who would have the most positive impact”, since I think all 3 are going to suck, if not in a major way, then at least in not fulfilling expectations of beatling last year’s performance. (And I suppose if I truly thought about it, I think Getz might be the key, since Che actually DID something as a 2B last year – we got nuthin’ from 3B and CF anyway.)

anyone remember the game...

that Q! threw out Renteria from the warning track tagging up at first base? Amazing play.

But in that same game, Dontrelle Willis had the ugliest no hitter going you can imagine through 6 innings. And Willis sucked ass last year. He had like 6 walks and no strikeouts. Well this year, he might get a few strikeouts. I forgot where I was going with that, Go Sox.

Fields.

Even if he doesn’t “develop” as a disciplined hitter, we can ill afford a shitty defense at 3B. Especially next to an unproven (though hopefully good) SS. With the Sox traditionally giving up too many unearned runs, Fields glove is key to me.

And WU, speaking of Pods, wasn’t his ‘05 decent only in the 1st half? And we made the playoffs despite his ’offensive’ 2nd half?

White Sox make Abreu one-year offer
2/3/2009

The White Sox have made free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu a one-year offer for $8 million, the New York Daily News reported.

Abreu made $16 million last season with the Yankees, hitting .296 with 20 homers, 100 RBIs, 100 runs and 22 steals.

The White Sox are the latest team linked to Abreu in the past week. The New York Post reported that the Mets have shown some interest, but have not made an offer. The Seattle Times reported that the Mariners were interested.

Fields

The team needs him to move to at least slightly below defense at 3b and a .750 OPS.

I feel pretty good about 2b, I think between the 3 options the Sox will get replacement value there.

I still subscribe (like last year) that Owens is not talented enough to remain on the field for any significant amount of time. Yes he may start the season but he just won’t be around long enough to do the damage IMO.

by Tdogg on Feb 3, 2009 8:56 AM CST reply actions

I'm going to agree with that

An argument can be made that for the 2009 offense Owens is the most important — a high OBP at the top of the order would probably make a big difference in run production. Plus, he’s expected to be the suckiest of the 3, so him raising his game to unprecedented heights would have the biggest impact in a way.

But, Fields is the one that showed the ability generate offense at relatively high level for rookie. If he can can somehow hit a fastball and cut down the Ks, he has the ability to be an elite power hitter. And honestly, the chances of Fields being something special is simply more realistic and more important to the Sox beyond 2009. So, it may be answering a different question, but Fields’ performance is the most important of the 3 to the Sox long-term…..

Abreu
According to Roger Rubin of the New York Daily News, the White Sox offered a one-year, $8MM deal to free agent outfielder Bobby Abreu. If the Sox are able to sign Abreu, you’d have to think Jermaine Dye or Jim Thome would be traded.

Abreu has also been linked recently to the Braves, Mariners, Dodgers, and Giants.

On a side note,

I really don’t feel AJ is as indispensable this year . . . I think Danks, maybe even Quentin take the ‘player the Sox can least afford to lose’ crown this year.

They do have Armstrong ready (or almost) to take AJ’s place and while he likely would not be AJ’s offensive equivalent, it is likely he would have superior defense. I just don’t think the dropoff is as large as say from Danks to SC6 . . . yikes.

I believe in peace.

But I would look beyond your WAR-like ways and go additionally to what was expeced of each of them last year. Are you going to tell me Danks performed twice above his expected return vs. Gavin? I don’t buy it. And Gavin donned his BHB before Danksy did.

I can see an argument where

Danks, just by the virtue of being near Floyd’s BHB, led to his Game 163 performance.

by jc2313 on Feb 3, 2009 12:38 PM CST up reply actions

if we're talking how each performed over their allotment of starts in 2008

Danks was twice as good as Gavin. that sounds right to me. Danksy could be an ace. Gavin is still Gavin. BHB is a third place prize.

Sober, I was appalled at the women. Drunk I was told I danced with them all.

by colintj on Feb 3, 2009 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

We're talking about what the expectations of performance of each

was before 2008 began. I have a hard time believing Danks did double the level of expectation and he sure didn’t “double” Gavin’s output.

Now, fast forward to 2009, and do I believe Danks will be “double” the pitcher Gavin is? Maybe.

well you are.

in terms of evaluation, the BHB tag is the epitome of overvaluing a few games. i think Danks will probably regress this year, perhaps even the whole staff. i think making the playoffs is especially taxing and it’s not like the position players are going to be taking up slack this year.

then again, the Sox under Kenny have had at least average starters every single year and since 2005 they’ve been great.

was either Quentin or Floyd, if you want to bring pitchers into the MVP mix…

AJ is more dispensable because his skills are eroding.

Even if he plays an entire season, he’s a 1-1.5 WAR player.

Don't forget Mr. Intangible.

Until someone comes in and handles the pitching staff well and becomes Team A-Hole (other than Ozzie) and sucks up negative feedback, AJ’s my guy.

Armstrong, et. al. would've had his arm knocked off at the plate in the playoff game.

And no one spikes the ball out of anger like AJ. I’m serious – he brings the ’tude. Hard to replace that with a rookie.

Defensively better?

Owens CF
Q! LF
Dye RF

or

BA CF
Q! RF
Abreu LF

The latter.

BA’s a better CF. Dye/Q/Abreu are a wash, though Bobby and Q have better arms.

Wrong, try again

Owens (11) > Anderson (3) (Net of 8 plays at CF) and

Abreu (-52) > Dye (-72) at RF (from 2006 to 2008, a net of 20 plays)

Total OF Improvement = +28 plays better

yea Brian Anderson is a better fielder than Jerry Owens

let's try again:

In 726.6 Innings (from 2007-2008), J.O. was 11 plays above avg. at center

Anderson, in 471.3 innings during the same span was 2 plays above avg.

Arm strength is irrelevant if you can’t make plays with it.

OCab question

It was mentioned by Fox sports (not a great baseball source) but whatever, that the Dodgers could just wait until June to sign him to avoid giving up a draft pick. If it gets to May, wouldn’t the White Sox have to consider offering him their 2B job? He’s suggested he’s willing to play at 2B, he had a solid year, it seems better then losing him for nothing.

Question

If he decides to move to 2B and is signed on a one-year deal by someone other than the Sox (Oakland maybe)…puts on similar stats to this year, is he still a Type A next year? Stat wise, I think he would be towards the top of the 2B tier…but I am not sure how you would compare him from prior years.

by BobbySouthSide on Feb 3, 2009 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

hmm i think you would still take the stats

as if he was still playing shortstop because hes played a majority of his abs there in the last three years.

Mental note

I posted this entry to gauge your opinions, which I suspected would differ from my own.

I’ll write a post on it later — a real post — on why I think Chris Getz is the most important of the 3 to the Sox success.

Is it because Getz' potential failure

means a large drop-off from last year’s production, and the other 2 positions could have Steve Hawking playing and be on par with last year’s performance?

That’d be my guess. You Anglophile, you.

We're in a recession/depression.

I bet MLB has “heavy” balls delivered this year. They will fly less far. HR’s will be down in an austerity push by owners. The players will be instructed to never throw foul balls to fans in the stands.

And bats will be shaped like 1899 bats so as to avoid splintering. Q will lead the league (if healthy) with 28.
