C&C Rehab Factory came through their 50 pitch bullpen sessions this morning unscathed. Contreras is now scheduled to go at least one inning against Seattle on Sunday while Colon is set to pitch Monday against KC. Cooper is quoted as saying it's still realistic for both to be ready for the opening day roster.

Is anyone else less than thrilled about an earlier-than-expected return by the Count?

I know he’s invariably a better option than whoever would be starting in his stead, but I’m extremely nervous about the prospect of a regression to the post-All-Star break 2006/April-July 2007/June-July 2008 Jose (or something like that).

well, as i've said before on here, white sox fans have been spoiled with pitching.

i’d certainly take the problem of jose pitching mediocre over most other teams’ problems.

If that was our only question mark, I'd completely agree

The Tallest Midget was supposed to reference more than just the 4th/5th starter’s spot, what with all of our other question marks. It just seems as though the general emotional consensus on the site is excitement and optimism regarding his return, while I can’t help but feel skeptical until he proves me wrong. That 7.50 ERA over 45-ish IP in June and July really worries me, and it’s not as if it’s an outlier given his performance in the past few seasons.

look around at the division and tell me if the sox’ list of midget issues is any longer or more daunting.

For one, and feel free to go to town,

but I think the volatility of the starting pitching staffs leads to a wash, or at least close to it, on that front. Obviously, Lee’s a given and Laffey looked very good before his collapse (no idea he was still only only 23). If Carmona’s fully healed from his ‘hip’ injury, I don’t think it’s out of the question for him to return to 2007 form, though I know/think he’s had some trouble this spring. Pavano < Colon, but I think can be put on the same page given their flyer status and. If Reyes beats Sowers for a rotation spot and stays healthy, I think he can post close to league average numbers. And if Westbrook’s back in the line-up by late summer, that gives them an obvious boost towards the end of the season.

by onthemark12 on Mar 12, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, that certainly would be the argument for their rotation.

Positionally,

the only real question marks in Cleveland are LF and whatever position on the left side of the infield Peralta doesn’t play. I don’t think I need to go into our dilemmas at 2B, 3B, and CF. So while it’s not overwhelmingly in Cleveland’s favor, I think the argument can be made, which is all I was saying initially.

by onthemark12 on Mar 12, 2009 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

question marks? or points of suck?

because that would be LF and 1B.

DeRosa-Cabrera-Peralta is fine. They have what’s probably the best collection of talent position-wise in the division.

I was avoiding the Hafner debate

because it doesn’t fit the established midget criteria. Arguing over whether or not Hafner puts up respectable numbers goes hand-in-hand with arguing the same for PK. I was focusing on positions where a relatively low set of expectations can be set without fear that they’ll be drastically exceeded, which, though it may be unlikely, Hafner is capable of doing at DH.

by onthemark12 on Mar 12, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Come now Konerko is a much stonger bet

to put up respectable numbers. We have no idea what Hafner has left.

Stronger bet, yes

but he could also post the .215 avg from the first half of last year. The point is I was trying to avoid projecting bounce-back years and focusing on positions where we can say with a decent amount of certainty that production won’t be much higher than replacement level. Hafner’s more likely to struggle, but he’s also capable of putting up big numbers.

by onthemark12 on Mar 12, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You have a lot more faith than me

And yes with injury anything is possible. My point is assuming no injury we know what to expect from Konerko – solid but not worth 12 million.

Hafner? He might be finished or at the very least devoid of most of his power. I highly doubt “big” numbers. Assuming of course, he plays a large part of the year.

I see no reason why Contreras can't give us 150-175 innings of 4.50 ball.

Having Richard in the bullpen as the long man looks good. That’s why picking up Ohman as a second late inning lefty wouldn’t be a horrible idea, especially if we’re gonna have a seventh guy in the pen.

by dantesox on Mar 12, 2009 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he can too (and would obviously love to see it)

But I can also see a patented Contreras implosion.

by onthemark12 on Mar 12, 2009 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why is an implosion expected?

Jose’s problems can be traced to injury later in the year, which is why they shelved him. Why is that more likely than his above avg performance prior, minus regression? And as pointed out better to learn as quickly as possible.

If he stays healthy, he should be, at minimum, a league average #4.
If he bounces back to some of his better old form, well then it’s just even more of a bonus.

This is probably a funny thing to say,

but I like the fact that Contreras has a rested arm. Granted, it’s rested because the guy was hurt, but nevertheless, he didn’t throw 200+ innings last year. Maybe that fastball will have a little more pop to start the season.

well put me firmly in the camp that 07 had a lot more to do with him being

mentally f’d up. Jose was pretty damn valuable last year before his problems. I think the key is giving him time during the season and making sure he’s not pitching if there are questions about his health. He clearly isn’t one of those guys that can struggle thru it.

But I’d bet you a pot pie he out does your boy Penny and Smoltz.

I'll take that bet re: Smoltz/Count Deathmatch

Count was rounding into shape when he was injured. His performance for the first 2 months, IIRC, sucked. He started improving for a few starts and then disappointed us all. He was injured the previous year (back issues?) and just might be on the downside.

Smoltz (not so much Penny) I think is a good bet. Penny hasn’t been the same since Alyssa Milano dumped him.

by colintj on Mar 12, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're certainly tourney bound, probably in the six to eight range

They were ticketed for a much better spot — a three or a four, likely — but Dominic James broke his foot against U-Conn. And for a team that was only eight deep before the injury… With DJ Marquette could compete with just about anyone (notice I said compete, not beat — they certainly weren’t better than any of UConn, Pitt or Louisville even with DJ). Without him they’ll still be a tough out, but they’re chances of making it to the second weekend are likely no greater than 20-25%.

by Sox-35th on Mar 12, 2009 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really? I thought I saw that Lunardi's latest brackets had 'em at a seven (could be wrong)...

In any case, I just think the committee is going to look at MU without James and see L vs UConn, L at the Ville, L at Pitt, L vs the Orange and L vs ‘Nova with only one win versus a ’nothing’ team. I actually agree with you about a five seed being pretty appropriate — losing to those teams above isn’t shameful (should’ve beaten ‘Cuse but oh well) but I fear the committee’s wrath.

OSFiB, Lunardi has West Virginia as a seven seed in the tourney and they’re not part of his ‘last four in’, so I’d feel pretty comfortable saying they’ll be in the tourney. It’s a shame that Alexander went pro (I say this without having a clue how he’s doing this year in the pros) — if he stayed they’re probably right there with ’Nova (ahead of Marquette and ’Cuse but behind the big three).

can’t get off the bench for a marginal Bucks team – although whether or not that has to do with his own (lack of) abilities or Scott Skiles allergy to certain humans is beyond me.

The Big East this year is just so ridiculously good and I think the committee won’t particularly reward them with aggregate bids (Providence is the seventh and last), but they’ll be highly clustered in the 2-6 range. Pitt might’ve cost themselves a no. 1 last night, but who knows.

CF battle
Look for Brent Lillibridge to get some time in center and DeWayne Wise to get a few consecutive starts, as the White Sox try to sort out the center field opening and the leadoff spot. To be honest, Wise just looks fearless out there right now, and stands out as the favorite.

http://scottmerkin.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/03/thursdays_roundup.html

Guillen reiterated that he doesn’t need the prototypical leadoff hitter at the top of the order, and basically ruled out a young guy with speed and patience such as Chris Getz as a possibility. If Getz gets the second base job, Guillen wants him to hit down in the order like Alexei Ramirez in 2008 so he can avoid any sort of extra pressure and just focus on making the plays in the field.

In Wise, who turned 31 in February, the White Sox could have a No. 1 guy with a little speed and power. Guillen has been talking up Wise since SoxFest, even when the center field focus fell on Jerry Owens and Brian Anderson, and doesn’t seem to care that others view Wise more as a reserve.

Quote from that second article
Gordon Beckham had one hit, one run scored and made a couple of slick plays in the field at shortstop during Thursday’s 9-3 loss to the Royals. But the most interesting note concerning the phenom came before the game, when Ozzie Guillen said Beckham could get a look in the outfield before Spring Training was up.

i had problems penciling him in a line-up in another thread

i had getz first (yeah, like that’s gonna happen), and che second.

from a point of view opposite of kenwo, its preferable to stack by OBP, right?

by onlysoxfaninboston on Mar 12, 2009 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

it's actually sort of staggered.

i wish i could send you some links, but it’s a combo of average, power and on base that are taken into consideration.

also, OBP is going to be a serious issue with this offense yet again. pencil AJ into the second spot, plus whoever plays CF hopefully 9th. so that’s

Alexei
AJ
Q!
Thome
JD
Konerko
Fields
Getz
Wise/BA

obviously, AJ should be hitting much lower, but given the youngins at the bottom, AJ gets to be show runner for Bat Handler a second consecutive season.

you think he could push AJ down? or do you mean Fields?

and i guess it really doesn’t matter that they’re going to give Wise a serious look considering BA’s lack of upside. neither can hit, so it’s a win in center over a full season if they go with Wise. it could be the difference, but it probably won’t be. i’m sure Kenny’s aware that there’s a problem in center. until then they’ll talk up some hustle.

NEW YORK—As Brian Cashman watched another Yankees starting pitcher struggle during the first inning during Tuesday’s game against the Blue Jays, the embattled general manager found himself unable to endure the tension any further, ripped off his tie and Oxford shirt to reveal a No. 99 Yankees jersey, and stormed onto the field to pitch eight scoreless innings. “The amazing thing is that besides Mr. Cashman having absolutely no playing experience, he didn’t even warm up,” Yankees pitching coach Ron Guidry said during a post-game press conference. “He wanted to go the whole game, and sure, I got booed when I pulled him, but I could see him losing a little edge on his curve[ball] around his 100th pitch and we need to save his arm for the rest of the season.” Though Cashman’s stellar performance received praise and admiration from Yankees fans, it was overshadowed in the national press by Washington GM Jim Bowden’s complete game one-hitter.

As Jerry Owens continues struggling, Ozzie said Brent Lillibridge is likely to get a look in center field. Lillibridge is a natural shortstop, but he’s played center before and has the speed to hit in the leadoff spot.

please remember this when you think about posting "why don't the sox play thome in the field?"
Thome vividly recalls when he made his last start at first base and went 2-for-3 at Philadelphia in 2007, only to suffer stiffness that knocked him out of the lineup for four games. That serves as a reminder that he served the White Sox best as a designated hitter.

injury update: richard, thome, nix
SURPRISE, Ariz. – White Sox starting pitcher Clayton Richard was struck in the left foot by a hard-hit ball by Kansas City’s Ross Gload in the fourth inning of Thursday’s 9-3 loss.

Richard was pulled after Gload’s hit, but his foot didn’t require treatment.

Designated hitter Jim Thome, who has been out because of lower back tightness, is scheduled to return Saturday against Texas.

Second baseman Jayson Nix would be available to play Friday against San Diego in Peoria. Nix hasn’t played since March 4 because of a right quadriceps strain.
