news from this morning's b game against LA.
PHOENIX – White Sox relievers Bobby Jenks, Octavio Dotel and Scott Linebrink allowed only one run over five innings in a B game Saturday morning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Camelback Ranch.

Jenks, throwing mostly breaking balls, struck out three and didn’t allow a hit in two innings. Dotel weaved out of trouble in his second inning of work. Linebrink’s velocity was in the low 90-m.p.h. range during his one inning of work.

Josh Kroeger, battling for a spot as a backup outfielder/first baseman, went 3-for-4 with a double. Jerry Owens, however, went 0-for-4 and didn’t hit the ball with authority until his final at-bat. Owens is competing for a job as the Sox’s leadoff batter.

sure. he is. i was messing around more than anything there.

i realize this post probably deserves a dead horse – wait, there’s one over on the side, we’re good. but i’m sure we’re all familiar with position adjustments by now. one of the reasons i would not draft a 1B before a legit middle infielder with 20+ home run and high OBP potential is that the 1B is already giving up about 15 runs to that middle infielder. more if that guy is a SS or the 1B ends up being more of a DH. now, i’m not going to say that you bring position adjustment wholescale into your analysis or disregard potential production or whatever. but you better be damn sure about that 1B because there’s a fuckload more guys out there who can prance around first and give you good production than up the middle.

sox are fucked.
PHOENIX – White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said the slumping economy won’t have an effect on his club in 2009 as much as 2010.

“I’m worried about 2010,” Reinsdorf told beat writers Saturday in his suite at Camelback Ranch. Several of the Sox’s sponsorships expire after this season, and negotiations to renew contracts have been tough because of the economy.

Those problems face the Sox and other major league teams, Reinsdorf said. But ticket sales for the 2009 regular season are actually ahead of last year’s pace, Reinsdorf said.

Reinsdorf said the projected shortfall in sponsorships in 2010 should not affect the player payroll. “Even if we have a decline in revenue in 2010, I don’t see it having an effect on the players we want to have.”

Reinsdorf did admit he expected a larger increase in attendance at Camelback Ranch than what has occurred so far, adding that they will evaluate their operations and perhaps play more night games to attract more working class fans on the West side of Phoenix.

the messiah will be in the field tomorrow
Up next: One of the most anticipated White Sox starts of Spring Training takes place Sunday in Peoria, Ariz., with Jose Contreras facing the Mariners at 3:05 CT p.m. Contreras has made a remarkable recovery from a ruptured left Achilles suffered last August. The right-hander is set to throw one or two innings, followed by Jeff Marquez, who is a lock to make the team — even in long relief. Gordon Beckham also will be in action for the White Sox.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

by The Wizard on Mar 14, 2009 6:36 PM CDT reply actions

You bolded the wrong part

Marquez, who has shown nothing above AA, is “a lock” to make the team based on 5 spring innings against the Cubs.

scot gregor joins joe cowley in declaring BA a lock.
If it’s possible to lock up a roster spot in one day, White Sox outfielder Brian Anderson accomplished the feat on Saturday.

and ozzie guillen.
White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen already has said Anderson will be on the regular-season roster when the White Sox break camp. More consistent performances such as Saturday should increase Anderson’s standing from defensive replacement to at least a part-time starter.

“He’s a big part of this ballclub, as he will see at-bats against lefties during the season. Brian is swinging better, and Wise, since the start of Spring Training, he has been opening eyes. But it’s still too early to decide what we are going to do there.”

well

the changeup was only bad, not brutal…

He did throw both the slider and changeup more this time out, which was good to see. But they both still need work. The slider doesn’t do a whole lot, and the changeup is telegraphed.
