"Since when have we followed a mainstream course?" Williams asked defiantly one day last week. "Definitely [Beckham] could play in the big leagues right now."
...
"I would rather [groom young] starting pitchers by first giving them a taste of the [major-league] bullpen," Williams said. "Three-inning stints in the bullpen as opposed to right out-of-the box responsibility for six innings."

Did someone see Poreda pitching otu of the stretch today with nobody on?

I’d have to guess from the tea leaves that he has more chance of Beckham to be on the opening day roster, if only because the Sox need pitching depth more than a everyday or backup 2B.

Getz hasn’t done anything to lose the job, and he seems to have the skillset (solid defense, competent hitter) that the Sox require right now.

Meanwhile the back of the rotation is talented if old and unreliable. The Sox though are a master of keeping guys off the DL. If they want to skip a start with Colon or Count then Poreda can step in. He’s more talented than anyone else they have around.

season ticket renewals ahead of last year; corporate sponsorships down
With the White Sox receiving a strong season-ticket-renewal push from last year’s American League Central title, Reinsdorf states that the White Sox are in pretty good shape for 2009 and are actually running ahead of 2008 in that particular category. He’s more worried about 2010, when a number of sponsorship deals are up for renegotiation, after already losing a number of sponsorships coming into this year.

There will be attempts made to renegotiate with those sponsors before the contracts expire, but in this economic climate, Reinsdorf pointed out how some of those companies are out of the business of sports marketing.

“Bank of America, for example, is a big sponsor. They’re gone,” Reinsdorf said. “We lost Pontiac this year. I assume we’ll lose Chevy next year when their deal is up. This is going on all over sports.”

damn, i love the chevy pride team. more thoughts from the chairman:

"Definitely [Beckham] could play in the big leagues right now."

Is not the same thing as will play in the big leagues……lol.

Yawn. They will both be in the minors.

Frankly...

If I read another post about Beckham’s abilities to start in the majors on Opening Day, or lineups with Beckham and Viciedo inserted, or why Beckham should start on Opening Day, etc, etc… my head might explode.

It’s as if we seriously have nothing else to talk about.

Not Sold Yet on Beckham

I like Chris Getz and I think he has a decent chance to make us forget about Scott Fletcher. This is not a dig. If Chris Getz can have a career as good as Scott Fletcher we have ourselves a nice valuable ballplayer.

I got a chance to see Beckham play today for the 1st time. He had a real nice at bat resulting in a hit and then looked horrible in the 9th. That’s not as important as the way he carries himself.

He has a certain something…call it arrogance or cockiness or majorleagueism (if you ever need to coin a new word…may I suggest a couple of Irish Car Bombs) that belies his inexperience. He may be ready and he may be real real good…like real good.

All hail the Bellflower Buccaneer!
