Anonymous poll - Should Gordon Beckham be on our opening roster as starting second basemen?

Star-divide

The purpose of this poll is to validate whether a debate truly exists in the SSS community about whether Gordon Beckham should and will be heading up North come April. If you haven't voiced your opinion on this topic, especially if you think he should start, participate in this anonymous poll and avoid the wrath of Larry.

The question is fairly specific based on a number of assumptions:

1. Alexei will play shortstop, non withstanding defensive concerns.

2. KW stated his preference that Beckham starts, i.e. gets regular at-bats, either at the minor or major league level.

Personally, I don't think Beckham should be on the opening roster. He's only played 14 games in the AFL, and needs to work on his craft more. Perhaps later as a September call-up assuming that Getz / Nix are playing below replacement level. There are very very few players who have succeeded at the Major League level with the number of minor league at-bats that Beckham has thus far accrued.

Beckham will be great. Just don’t be like the Cubs and bring him up yesterday and ruin him.

2-3 months in AA, then a stint at AAA. But always have him on the ready.

technically it still wouldn't be

because if anyone cared enough they could just click everyone’s name and see what they voted

But Frank Thomas was always his own guy, he always lived by some sort of code that wasn’t especially clear to anyone but him.

Lmao

I don't need to look at fancy stats

to see if a guy is good or not. You might have to.

i voted yes.

what the hell. a little adversity isn’t going to bother this guy.

Exactly,

this isn’t like other (crappy) Sox prospects we’ve had to deal with for the last decade. This is a guy who was the 8th overall pick in the draft, a guy who loves the spot light, who wants to be in big situations and hit the ball. Anyone whose ever listened to him give an interview since the Sox drafted him can tell, he thinks he’s good at baseball. And despite all of this silliness over whether or not he knows Harold Baines (come on now, there are people in Harold’s family who don’t know who Harold is…the guy could be on FIRE and never say a word), Gordon Beckham can hit a damn baseball. If he’s not brought up, it will probably be to delay the arbitration clock, like Tampa did with Longoria. I do not understand where this idea comes from of a guy needing to ‘serve his time’ in the minors. If a guy’s good, bring him on up, please.

Man, you know who Beckham sounds a lot like in your paragraph?

thank you

He is my generation’s failed prospect, so I’m probably gonna remember him even when I’m as old as you.

Beckham at SS

Alexei at CF, Getz at 2nd. Eventually. I can’t bear to watch Jerry Owens or Brian Anderson in centerfield and leading off. Wise I could certainly stomach.

Why on earth would you want to 'hurt" the long term health of the White Sox

Again I’m sorry, this is just silly.

assuming that no one voted more than once

and the 100 or so that voted thus far are somewhat representative of the SSS community, 29% voting ‘yes’ ain’t small potatoes…

bhoov is the doctor, i just stayed in school for a very long time

by onlysoxfaninboston on Mar 17, 2009 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

i wish i had screen capped this over time

but i’m willing to bet the sooner you voted, the more likely the chance you were a regular. iirc, at 50-75 votes it was 80-75/20-25 and has slowly dipped since.

and then of course the Sox answered the question as the regulars knew it ought be.

I can lead you to 4 Wisdom, but I can't free your brain from the evil of Punto.

by colintj on Mar 22, 2009 11:01 PM CDT reply actions

but even 75-80/20-25

is a far cry from ~ ‘most everyone’ or whatever phrase we both used to imply that there was most likely lack of debate on this topic. there is a sizeable faction within SSS that preferred Beckham in the opening line-up. take that for what it’s worth.

and if most people voted while logged on, you could determine their overall SSS user activity and label them as either regular or not and find out when they voted to see if calendar time modified the association between reg/non-reg user and polling results. too much work though, and unnecessary…

by onlysoxfaninboston on Mar 23, 2009 10:39 AM CDT up reply actions

2:1 ratio is "most everyone", or "over 50%".

If a politician wins with a 2:1 ratio its’ a “landslide”. Like this. Perhaps not a Cuba/Venezuela/Russian/Ugandan “supermajority”, but substantial, nonetheless.

PS OT, where TF is bhoov? Now that he revealed his “Dr” title he’s scurried away from here. Perhaps to a “Doctors only” site where only OSFIB and he can talk about the Sox?

the post wasn't for you. fuck off.
