MESA, Ariz. – White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Friday that the rotation could be settled after Bartolo Colon and Jose Contreras pitch Monday against the Los Angeles Angels at Tempe.

Colon needs to keep the 91 mph velocity and command he displayed in his last start against Oakland. He is recovering from elbow surgery.

Contreras is scheduled to follow Colon on Monday.

Contreras could pitch the final exhibition game against Arizona.

also, in case you were wondering if actual thought was put into c+c's rehab schedule.
MLB effectively treats the games from March 27 forward as "regular season" games with regard to the DL. If a player appears in a game March 27 or later, the Club can no longer backdate his DL placement nine days. Just like the regular season, a player is only eligible to be placed on the DL the day following his last game appearance.

This can make for some interesting maneuvering at the end of spring. If a player is dealing with a "nagging" injury, the Club may opt for him to participate in games at Minor League camp or "B" games between Major League teams from March 27 forward. Therefore protecting their ability to backdate the maximum nine days.

do you think that's what's wrong with cliff lee? or could it be something else?

going into todays game vs san fran he had given up 25 hits in 11 2/3 innings with an era of 12+.
today, 2 innings, 8 hits, 6 er, era for the spring up to 14.49.

brian anderson would've caught that...

by BuehrleMan on Mar 27, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

cliff lee was horseshit in spring last year.

and that’s when he was actually battling for a roster spot. he is exhibit A for why spring stats don’t mean shit for the regular season.

i haven’t watched him so i’ve got no idea if anything is wrong. when i was doing my preview of the indians, in his most recent game at that point he had limited himself to basically throwing only a couple of his pitches because he wanted to work on those. take it for whatever that’s worth.

by larry on Mar 27, 2009 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll shit if Cliff Lee comes anywhere near last year's numbers.

I’ll bet he doesn’t record over 200 innings OR an ERA under 4.00.

by dantesox on Mar 27, 2009 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

ok

maybe i misremembered but i thought he had a pretty good spring last year because he was finally healthy.

brian anderson would've caught that...

his era was over 8.

which was still impressive enough to be out the other candidates.

by larry on Mar 27, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, i just tried looking it up

and espn was the first place i was able to find 2008 spring stats. era of 8.31 but only pitched 8 2/3 innings all spring.

by BuehrleMan on Mar 27, 2009 4:06 PM CDT up reply actions

in regular games.

remember, they’ve got b games, minor league games, side sessions. guys coming back from injury like lee was aren’t going to be in regular spring games from the start.

This might sound stupid, but

how did Richard look stuff-wise? Was he unliucky? Just pure chance with the results? Did he really look as bad as the stats say?

by dantesox on Mar 27, 2009 3:52 PM CDT reply actions

I missed it, obvs, but I think it would be hard to come up with 7 ERs in 1 out, if he was looking anything BUT bad.

I’d be interested in an answer too, though, if it was anything but disastrous.

Anybody think Josh Anderson of the Braves worth giving Atlanta

something? He’s possibly available . I’m thinking he’s not a big enough upgrade over Anderson, though a very different skill set.

by dantesox on Mar 27, 2009 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

He's out of options, so they're definitely entertaining trade possibilities

(assuming Blanco is to win the CF job). If you could get him at a reasonable value, I like the upside of it. I don’t know much/anything about his defense, but I get the feeling he could be a Chris Getz-type in center. Good contact hitter, will get on base enough, swipe a few, and so forth.

by onthemark12 on Mar 27, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

He looks to have better on base skillz than BA and is a lefty at the plate

if he was cheap, I’d see if he could platoon with BA since he looks to be better than Wise. I don’t see it happening though.

You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

its true

There was an incident a few years ago. The Bulls were killing the Knicks, scrubs were playing out the clock, and the fans were screaming at them to score 100 points for free Big Macs. They took a ton of shots, Knicks took offense and they tried to fight some Bulls players.

That reminds me - last night's episode was beyond superb. I don't really commit to shows anymore, as I've said before, but if I am around Thursday evenings, I always make sure I catch Earl.

The crazy old man in last night’s episode made me laugh so hard I cried.

Anderson!

Wow, he just absolutely crushed an outside fastball and took it deep to right field. I can’t recall him hitting with power like that to the opposite field before, he’s usually bailing out against RHPs.

Coach says he needs more toughness. I gotta step up.

MVP! MVP!

Remember how Mags used to wait on the knee-high outside fastball and just step into it and hammer it into the RF bullpen bar area? That’s what it reminded me of, he looked for it strided right into it and hammered it, pretty sweet.

Coach says he needs more toughness. I gotta step up.
