White Sox Further Pare Roster; Jerry Owens Waived
The White Sox optioned pitcher Jeff Marquez to Triple-A Charlotte. Marquez started the spring as a potential starter.
Outfielder Josh Kroeger and pitcher Randy Williams were reassigned to minor league camp, and pitchers Lance Broadway and Jack Egbert were optioned to Charlotte. Infielder Jayson Nix was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to March 17.
[larry: these moves appear to pave the way for mike macdougal to make the opening day bullpen, along with dj carrasco and clayton richard, and for dewayne wise to be the opening day leadoff hitter and CF.]

I've been away...
Did Beckham win the starting 2B job? Did Owens win the Leadoff Position?
Thx.

Beckham should be in the bullpen.
No Gordo was sent down to AA, Getz won the job and Owens has been awful. BA/Fields possible lead off men.

That's how bad it got while you were gone Chi
Brian Anderson is going to be leading off for your Chicago White Sox occasionally.

Hmm.
Can’t Getz do it? Or is that still “too much pressure” on the newbie?
At least it’s only (usually) 1AB/game. How bad could it be?

Getz has suggested he'd be fine with the role and likes being at the top of the order.
I think for now though he’s going to bat 2 unless BA / Wise / Fields all massively fail. Fields is hitting a robust .450 in spring training at least, so there’s some hope he’ll be serviceable.

Owens Waived
PHOENIX – Jerry Owens said he was waived Monday by the White Sox, thus giving Dewayne Wise the starting center field job and leadoff duties.
“I can’t say my performance was helping me at all,” Owens said. “Dewayne is a great player and he picked it up the last few weeks. He deserved it.”

Presumably in a platoon, right?
Anyway, thanks for the good news.

He might not
be able to get on base, and he might have a bit of a rubber arm, but Owens always struck me as a very decent kid with a very good attitude. His comment above is Exhibit A. Obviously it’s the right decision for the team, but I still feel sorry for the guy.

i agree. he seems to be a good person. Hopefully the twins pick him up and bat him leadoff.
He also doesn’t care much for me, so I expect me posting on these things to piss him off.

By Joe Cowley
Jerry Owens cleaned out his locker today after being told he would be waived. It won’t be official until Wednesday.

by this, cowley means that, if he isn't claimed by a team in the next couple days, he'll be a free agent on wednesday.

I am all for giving Macdougal one more chance
If this guy could just have any control the White Sox would have the best bullpen in the majors.
And I know, if my uncle was a girl, he’d be my aunt.

DW’s = .310
i think maybe they cut the wrong guy.

I’m not sure my team will do any good though, I don’t really know the rules, we should have a had a mock up so i could get used to it.

problem for me is
MLB has no exposure here, so I only really know the AL central, which is why I ended up drafting one guy who has just had Tommy John surgery and two who are unlikely to even make their respective rosters.

Just rely on the experts
Every sports site has a mock draft you can read and see who “experts picked” and a ranking of players.

But I’d take Wise at this point in their respective careers. I’d prefer Brian Anderson get the majority of the starts myself.

they're the same player in terms of production, they just get to replacement level differently.
colin covered this in his CF WAR. neither should be starting for a major league team. one can question whether either should even be on a major league roster.
by larry on Mar 30, 2009 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Owens is quite probably worse at this point, even if thye are both bad enough for that not to matter
Owens got his minor league OBA when his legs were in better shape, I wouldn’t expect him to produce at that level now. Wise is probably still about the same bad he’s been for the last 3 years.

WELL MISS YOU JERRY
There was an incident a few years ago. The Bulls were killing the Knicks, scrubs were playing out the clock, and the fans were screaming at them to score 100 points for free Big Macs. They took a ton of shots, Knicks took offense and they tried to fight some Bulls players.

DEAR ABBY: I am a 20-year-old male living what appears to be “the dream.” I have completed my bachelor’s degree, and I’m starting what will more than likely be a prosperous career. Still, something important is missing.
All my life I have always felt very isolated. Although I have been able to develop “friendships,” the more I progress in life the more these friendships slip away.
I have been unsuccessful in finding a mate, and I am embarrassed to still be a virgin. Is there something horribly wrong with me that drives people away? — LONELY GUY, MONTREAL, CANADA

General manager Ken Williams, who talked about the center-field job along with the six roster moves made by the team, confirmed there would not be a platoon, per se. The goal for Guillen is to win every day, meaning there might be games where Anderson starts against righties or Wise faces lefties depending on the matchups.
