Jerry Owens: In Memoriam
February 13, 2005 - March 30, 2009
We are gathered here today to remember Jerry Lee Owens. Jerry came to us from the Washington Nationals in exchange for Alex Escobar. Today, he leaves us after being placed on irrevocable waivers.
My favorite Jerry Owens memory is Jerry hitting his first and only major league home run off of Roy Halladay to help Mark Buehrle gain an infrequent win in one of their classic pitching duels.
Please add your memory - or at least your name - to the guestbook below.

Very nice kid.
So glad he’s gone. Now, can we proceed to give Anderson 115 starts, or finally sign Yasser Gomez? Or make a deal here, Kenny?

BTW, dante, ESPN just had a defensive metrics piece
in the most recent magazine issue that ought to cure you of your Abreu wanderlust. Check it out.

I know he pretty much sucks defensively.
I didn’t want him for hid defense. I wanted him for: left-handed bat, OBP, leadoff, insurance……AND CHEAP for one year.

The point of the article
is defense is being addressed seriously in contract talks for the first time. UZR, runs saved/lost are being looked at just as much as hitting stats.
Ergo, since Bob sucks SO hard on “D”, his paltry contract.

I Will...
I will always remember the sheer overwhelming number of Sox fans who like Jerry Owens just because he was fast. Oh, those poor, misguided souls. It is a sad, sad day, the flag is at half-staff for Meatball Nation today.

but know that he’ll be in a better place – outside the white sox organization. it’s okay for people to share similar memories about jerry. he certainly touched all of our lives.

My second favorite memory of him was when he was DFA’d. No wait: that was Pablo Ozuna.

Neither is good, so you go with the veteran who knows how to work with major league pitchers. If we were the Royals we might go with Lucy, we’re still trying to win this year, we go with Miller.

Shatner said it best:
We are gathered here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. But it should be noted that this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most… human.

favorite Jerry memory
The make up game vs the Rays in ’07. The two worst teams in the AL at the time. Who wouldve guessed they would play in the postseason just a year later?
Anyway, it was a sweltering Monday afternoon battle, in the first inning Contreras retires the Devil Rays 3 up 3 down.
Jerry Owens, batting lead off, starts things off for the Sox with single to cf.
With Fields up to bat, Owens takes off, caught stealing!
One out.
He went 0-3 the rest of the day.
He was real supportive of the guys in this inning though:
- A.J. Pierzynski homered to deep right
- J. Dye homered to deep left
- J. Uribe homered to deep left
- D. Richar doubled to right
- D. Wheeler relieved E. Jackson
- A. Gonzalez struck out swinging
- D. Richar to third on wild pitch
- J. Owens struck out swinging
- J. Fields homered to deep left, D. Richar scored
- J. Thome struck out looking
Jerry clapped the loudest for Fields’ HR.

wise already looking over his shoulder (at a parenthetical)...
TEMPE, Ariz. – Dewayne Wise said he was informed Monday by manager Ozzie Guillen that he would be the White Sox’s leadoff man during a pregame workout.
“He said, ‘congratulations’ and told me he was going to put me at the leadoff spot and see what happens,” Wise said. "He told me he was proud of me for the way I played this spring and best of luck to me.
“I’m pretty sure if I swing the bat well and do the little things, I’ll probably stay there. If not, he might go with (Chris Getz) or somebody like that.”

i don't understand why SSS posters are such whiners. on other sites, posters just make one if there isn't one instead of crying like a little racist bitch about it.
there’s a fanpost section. avail you’reself of it. maybe one of those editors will bump it to the front page.

i know, seriously.
it’s like these whiny polesmokers think the editors can read a schedule and, on top of that, have the ability to set up gamethreads for automatic posting. it’s this entitlement society we live in today, i tells ya.

it takes me just as long to make a gamethread as it does for you to do it. and i – and apparently the other editors – don’t give a shit about spring training games as much as you. this site is supposed to be interactive. that’s why there’s a fanshot and fanpost section. you want content, create it yourself.

yeah, looked bad at first.
For those who don’t have MLB.TV, Alexei was coming home from 3rd on a throw back to 2nd base. He beat the throw home, but jammed his leg into Napoli’s shinguard. He looked to be in a lot of pain, and limped around, but the announcers think he just cut his knee, and should be fine.

Jerry owens, RIP
I will remember Jerry Owens because he above any other particular player made me a smarter baseball fan.
I remember when he won the batting title in the minors, and I was like “great, speedy guy, can hit apparently, he’s the next pods!” But as I expreienced the kind of game he brought to the table, I realized exactly how misleading minors stats are, and how terrible it was for me to desire a new pods. through this site and also fire joe morgan I became aware of exactly how valuable and important a guy like jerry was to a team, that is to say, of negative value.
Jerry was the first player that made me look beyond the things I heard from hawk, and really truly understand how terrible he was. jerry helped me grow up.

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment’s gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind.
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
[Now] Don’t hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won’t another minute buy.
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind.
You’re my boy, Jerry! You’re my boy!

where jerry went wrong.
From talking with Guillen and general manager Ken Williams, it sounds like a lack of energy contributed to costing him the job at the top.
“Well, everybody has different ways to do things,” Guillen said. “If you are going to act like him, you have to be Harold Baines. The leadoff guy has to give some life and stuff. We talked to him about it a lot of times, but that’s the way he is. That’s his personality. We have to respect that.”
so, don’t be too high energy like nick swisher or orlando cabrera. but don’t be too low key like jerry owens. unless you’re harold baines.
and i know this will piss the cheat off:
Egbert will work out of the bullpen for Triple-A Charlotte, according to Williams.

My Jerry Owens memory is him standing in the parking lot at the A’s spring training facility in 08 signing autographs for every single person near the clubhouse. He was the last car to leave the lot. Class act. Contrasted with Brian Anderson, who I’ve seen act like a complete tool in the same situations, and I must say I have been cheering for Owens.
