Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

No need for a second take. That really is Gordon Beckham's name penciled in at second base for the White Sox' exhibition game today against Australia's World Baseball Classic team.

Does that mean we can add a new name to the position battle with the camp's biggest logjam? Not so fast, says manager Ozzie Guillen, who insists his prized prospect remains a shortstop.

The highly touted first-round pick (eighth overall) from last June's draft belted his second home run of spring training Thursday in a 5-4 split-squad loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Glendale, Ariz. Afterward, bench coach Joey Cora revealed that Beckham will be making some cameos around the infield.

Beckham

is in vintage Brian Anderson form this ST.

Since he is from UGA, and I know a little about those douche bags, I think he has a 50/50 shot of getting an STD in ST, ending up in jail for date raping a girl with a roofie, and getting drunk at a bar with Brian Anderson and punching a UF or SC fan in the face.

I hope he avoids all of those, for our sake. Because so far this spring, he looks like the future at 2B, maybe 3B.

what are the chances that...

an opening day lineup of beckham at ss and alexei at 2nd is better both offensively and defensively than alexei at ss and getz/lilli/nix at 2nd? or alexei at ss and beckham at 2nd?

So many questions.

what should also be included is what would the difference be, defensively, between Ramirez at SS and Becks at 2B, and Becks at SS, and Ramirez at 2B.

as far as beckham goes i’m not too worried about his little psyche. more concerned with his service time starting before optimum.

he’s a shorter-term asset. as long as viciedo can help the team he should be there. if he’s worse than fields/betemit, leave him in the minors and hope he gets better.

by larry on Mar 6, 2009 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

not average youngest, no

except maybe during WWII, but tons of guys are ready before they are 24 or 25.

Theres a precedent for guys on clubs playing young when the talent just isnt there ahead of them. BJ Upton in TB for example. Baldelli missed the whole 05 season, his 23 age year, but already had two seasons under his belt.

Our own heroes Chet Lemon and Harlod Baines were already cagey vets at the age of 23. Rick Monday was an all-star at 23 like Chet, and Andre Dawson was racking up stats like his contemporary Harold by then. This guy Babe Ruth was in his 5th season already at 23, he was ok.

Even recently, look at all the ROY award winners 23 or younger:
Ryan Braun, Jason Jennings, Dustin Pedroia, Verlander, Scott Williamson.
ROY at 22: Hanley Ramirez, Rafael Furcal, Evan Longoria
ROY at 21:Albert Pujols, Huston Street, Kerry Wood

I think Beckham could be our everyday 3rd baseman right now over Fields, but I rather see him as the SS with Alexei back at 2nd or in cf.

Ryan Zimmerman was in his age 23 season last year. His similar batters by age according to baseball reference:
   1. Ken Keltner (971)
   2. Gary Sheffield (954)
   3. Eric Chavez (951)
   4. Harlond Clift (950)
   5. Scott Rolen (948)
   6. Hank Blalock (943)
   7. Carney Lansford (942)
   8. Vern Stephens (934)
   9. Jeff Francoeur (934)
  10. Del Ennis (931)

I could see Beckham fitting in with that group really well.

after playing in the minors and at a much higher level than beckham has...

Longo was used to show you dont have to be 24 or 25 to be in the bigs.

I think the Zimmerman comparison is more accurate, and therefore the similar players are along the lines of what we could expect.

Beckham would give us similar power to Fields, with less strikeouts and a better glove.

perhaps we should quit using age.

beckham has shown zero ability to play above approximately the AA level. and that assessment may be a stretch. a few nice outings in ST and 70 PAs in the AFL don’t mean much to me.

Because it is more fun to talk

about than Fields and Getz . . . I don’t know, this thread is full of craziness. Has Getz even played 2B this spring? Lets put him in CF, why can’t he play there? Then you could have Beckham at 2nd, Alexei at SS, Viciedo at 3rd . . . move Fields to 1st. Trade Konerko for Kotchman and Figgins. Cut Thome. DH Figgins. That could just be the start . . .

Dear Prudence:

My boyfriend and I have been together for almost a year and a half now, and I love him dearly. He stays at my house a couple of nights a week, and there have been three separate occasions when he has wet the bed; however, he doesn’t know that I know he wet the bed. I feel bad because I can tell when it happens that he’s terrified and just praying to God that I don’t roll over and realize that the bed is soaked. I just don’t know how to tell him that I know. I don’t want him to ever feel ashamed of it (my brother had this problem when we were growing up), and there is no way I would ever think less of him because of this. How do I broach the subject? I just want him to know it is nothing to be embarrassed about without embarrassing him.

Bartolo Colon
The Sox do a good job with reclamation projects. Whether that’s because of Kenny Williams or Don Cooper or Herm Schneider doesn’t really matter, as long as the job is getting done. Over the past couple of years, the Sox have always been among the best teams at preventing injuries and keeping their DL days low. Colon has looked good in camp, but like last year, the worry is more about just sustaining his performance than it is about getting him to reach a certain peak level. Unlike last year, Colon is not just a patch for the rotation that’s buying them time, but an integral part of the winning plan. It’s also possible that the Sox have Jose Contreras returning, giving them a few options at the back of the rotation. The risk is that there’s a real drop-off behind those two. Yes, Clayton Richards is there, but while he showed he can pitch effectively, no one believes that he’s more than a back-end guy. Colon is the key, and even with the early positive signs, I’m dubious.

Lar, because you’re so careful to never make a mistake or put out anything you can be squarely called on is how you operate here….that’s great….but maybe I like to throw things out now and again….there is some risk involved…..but, when I do…..they aren’t nearly as proposterous as you make them out to be.
