Eric Gagne released

Could the White Sox use Eric Gagne as a bullpen piece. he got released jst a few hours ago by the Brewers from his minor league contract. In the middle of spring training, he might sign cheap thinking he might be not on a team going into the year. If the Sox offer him a contract, I see a 1 year minor-league deal. What do you guys think about the Sox trying to sign Eric Gagne?

okay. this wasn't meant to be mean. there are standards for what should be prominently displayed on the side bar of this site for a number of days.

a question about whether the white sox should sign to a minor league contract a guy with serious damage to both the labrum and rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder is not up to that standard. it seems clear that dasox wasn’t even aware of why gagne was released. some minor research and thought is generally required for a fanpost.

on the other hand, what dasox posted regarding his “A.L. Central Outlook” is a substantial and relevant topic that he clearly put some thought and time into and is certainly worthy of being on the side bar.

I agree with BoxiingHideout

The bitchiness and irrelevancy of some of the conversations scream “few standards except in the mind of those who post day and night – every day and night”. I mean today, for god’s sake, comments on Brian Myrow, who a few short years ago was playing in the Northern League – which is just a shade below the minors – and wasn’t even the best, or 2nd best player on that team.

So comment away on whatever you want, and, although Gagne is done and not worth considering, maybe some of you want to look at the board in your own eye before talking about the toothpick in BoxingHideout.

I'm not sure what you are arguing about

Comments on this board have almost no standards, but fan posts do (see this helpful link).

White Sox: Trying to roll a hard six.

by vince_ on Mar 8, 2009 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

the pertinent difference is that the bitchiness and irrelevance occurred in the comments section and not as the topic of a fanpost (unless i missed a myrow post that was up).

rather part of the point is that, for those who don’t post here day and night, that the content that immediately grabs peoples’ attention when they visit, such as the front page stories or the stuff at the top of the sidebars, actually be as relevant and interesting as possible.

by rhythm on Mar 9, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Oh, OK

So “the rule” is the topic must be “relevant”, except if it is “funny”. Any other rules we should all know?

As a regular reader of SSS, but rarely a poster, I have never found the sidebar fanpost topics a problem as there are many topics, by their title, I never bother with and the Gagne one only caught my interest because of its absurdity (i.e. we all know that Gagne’s arm is done, that getting released this early in spring training is telling, etc.).

On the other hand I didn’t read “Who hates the english more…” as it held no baseball related interest to me whatsover – my choice.

So either:

A) if you aren’t interested in a fanpost based on its title don’t look at it, or

B) If there are going to be “rules” for “fanposts” then perhaps these should be clarified, applied evenly, and “enforced” by an editor who reviews before it ever hits the webpage.

by Dick Allen's batting helmet on Mar 9, 2009 12:41 AM CDT reply actions

The guidelines for fanposts *were* clarified

They are on the link I posted above. They are in a sticky post at the top of the fanposts.

I’m not an editor or anything so this is just my opinion, but I don’t really see what bone you are trying to pick.

This post was barely over the 75 word limit, and didn’t contain much useful information beyond the fact that Gagne was released. Not everyone may know that his arm was shot, and doing a little due diligence makes a ‘meh’ fanpost a good one.

Sure, larry can be a jerk, and could have phrased the criticism more nicely, but that’s larry being larry. Might as well ask why fire is hot or water wet. I’m sure some day larry will refuse to write content and demand a trade to True Blue LA.

Ultimately this is coming down to you disagreeing with larry about the criticism of this particular fanpost. This is fine, but you are trying to spin it into some huge critique of the entire site, which I don’t think is warranted or deserved.

by Shoeless In SC on Mar 9, 2009 3:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, coming from one of the editors

The entire point of fanposts and fanshots is to give non-editors and authors of the site a chance to write their own articles. Before he got the bump, larry used to do one hell of a series on the farm system and has continued to churn out quality front page stuff. I am still in the process (I swear WU, I will finish it) of two series of my own. And yeah, we do get the occasional music thread, or the “Who hates the English more than Cheat” thread, but that is a rather large part of what this website is. We are a community. We do crap like that. There are very few no-nonsense sites as a part of SBNation. The only time I feel like I should intervene in someone’s fanpost or fanshot is if they swear in the title or type something incredibly offensive. With all that being said, I agree that this was not fanpost worthy. If dasox had a URL, it would have been fine as a fanshot. Granted, it has very little to do with the Sox and I don’t see us going out to get him, it would have been fine down there. Dasox, you have been putting out a lot of content that you have spent more time on than this. And it is improving, it really is. Just next time you have something like this, maybe just make a fanshot.

But Frank Thomas was always his own guy, he always lived by some sort of code that wasn’t especially clear to anyone but him.

by U-God on Mar 9, 2009 6:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Or maybe you shouldn't fear what an anonymous editor says

This isn’t larry’s site, nor does he profit or have anything to gain from it besides good White Sox discussion. If you want to post something, post it, but if it’s stupid or irrelevant then people will rag on it. If it’s funny or insightful, or reports some kind of breaking news, you’ll get good discussion.

Confusion breeds success. If they don't know each other, opponents can't have strategy. GENIUS.

there is a balance which needs to be struck between things that are relevant to the "hardcore" posters of the community and what is relevant to the more casual / all readers.

unfortunately, this fanpost on signing a washed up injured pitcher is not even close to being relevant to either.

“Eric Gagne just got released from his minor league contract by the Brewers a few hours ago, and if the Royals could get him signed to a cheap minor league deal, it might provide some upside. Having an old closer to teach the young players in the bullpen will be alone worth whatever his contract will be, an pitching help is an upside.”

Can’t “contrast”? Because they say the same thing and are written by the same person?

Then there is this gem (from the other site):

well, that's true.

as you can see from what boxingguy said above, i’m certainly a divisive figure who makes some people not want to participate. i’m not supposed to be going after people, especially newer posters, with the same, shall we say, glee that i did in the past. of course, i have a feeling that i’m not the only one who people such as boxingguy should fear for that sort of thing. this site doesn’t tolerate half-assed opinions/research. whether that’s “being a jerk” or not, i don’t know. our community is certainly difficult to penetrate. we’re making an attempt to make it less so without losing the standard of quality posting and also understanding that our community is of a certain bent when it comes to a philosophy of baseball and how to act etc. however, we also have individuals – like kenwo and WTGTD – that buck this philosophy and provide a nice check on the rest of us. i forget WU’s specific metaphor but you have to be both strong and knowledgeable to thrive on this site.

Shoot, this isn't testing for Harvard Law or Wharton business -

it’s supposed to be fun – we’re talking baseball, not rocket science or curing cancer (Obama has that covered). Some of the most hilarious posts have been in response to asinine things others have postulated as gospel. We mostly have a Chicago background, meaning most of us have a Chicago sense of humor – sarcastic, sardonic, and often fatalistic. Combine that with young idelaogues who may lack perspective/wisdom/knowledge but have unbridled enthusiasm and you have a very diverse, smart, and entertaining group.

Caveat emptor. If this site was like BCB or those that don’t allow swearing or poking fun at other opinions I’d have been canned long ago (and some – Pete, you there? – would love to see that) or gone on to greener pastures by choice. This site is fun, unless you lack confidence or a semblance of humility.

So kiss my a$$, DA’sbhelmet. My English-hater fanpost is green. I earned it. Go get your own. (Oh, you did! Congrats.) You POS. ;)

btw colin – GO BLUE! First tourney in your lifetime, cherish these days.
