Caught some of the Boers and Bernstein show on the Score Friday afternoon, and have to disagree with their take on the Joe Crede tribute.
Only heard a few minutes, so maybe the tone shifted later in the show, but they were questioning the White Sox’s decision to do a Crede tribute before Friday night’s game against the Twins at the Cell.
I’ve witnessed more than my fair share of lame homages during 16 years of covering baseball, but this was not one of them.
I think the Sox were right on with their tribute to Crede, which ran about two minutes before the start of the game.

Guillen added with a mischievous smile that Crede’s occasional cheapness was his one downfall. The White Sox have a rule under Guillen that if they sweep a player’s former team, such as Jim Thome with the Indians, then that player has to buy something for the rest of the team.

Since players such as Crede and Mark Buehrle only have known the White Sox, they got stuck with a great deal of the unattached squads.

“Crede always came up with the cheapest thing ever,” said Guillen with a laugh.
When Crede came to the plate for the first time, the Air Supply classic “All out of Love” played in the background. It was a musical move engineered by Brian Anderson, who heard strains of “Say You, Say Me” playing in an August game last year courtesy of Crede.

Paul Konerko shared a tale from a trip to Detroit, which pointed up Crede as a good-natured teammate.

“We were walking home, it was kind of late, and I wasn’t with him. I was with a couple other guys,” Konerko said. "He thought it would be funny at 1:00 in the morning to hide behind a building and you know, we’re in the city, it wasn’t a nice area, that it would be funny to jump out and scare somebody.

“That definitely got my attention and scared me a little bit. It was probably the most scared I’ve been in the last few years, anyway, but that’s Joe. He wants to do those kinds of things. It took awhile for him to get to that point. But once he did, the last few years, there was never a time when we weren’t laughing on the plane or the bus or in the clubhouse with him.”

I seem to remember thinking this last year before Contreras got hurt...

how does he (or — more importantly — how is he going to) get left-handed hitters out? I’m not trying to be snarky but rather a question posed to those with good knowledge of his pitch f/x data versus lefties. His fastball is as straight as an arrow* and he doesn’t drop down for lefties, so essentially it’s the forkball and that’s about it, yes? And if he doesn’t quite have the feel for the forkball, you (more or less) get an outing like tonight?

I should add that I know my expectations for Contreras’ and Colon’s first several starts should be tempered, but I still felt the question was worth asking.

*I’m also aware that I can’t completely discount the fastball, but it seems it’s only effective when his forkball is working.

by CWSKeith on Apr 10, 2009 10:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

stoney and hawk said he's developing a cutter

we’ll see if that plays out. and yeah, he’s had problems against lefties since his velo dropped.

crede and casilla had hard hits off of him… the rest was just typical Twinkie bullshit. that team annoys me.

Okay I will say it

I always really liked Crede alot. He was a great guy and a rare quality homegrown product of the White Sox system. However, his behavior at the end of last year made this hurt much less.

Remember, he was basically refusing to play…

"...and when it comes to baseball, we have two favorite clubs: the Go-Go White Sox...and whoever plays the Cubs!!!"

by 815Sox on Apr 11, 2009 8:00 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

he wasn't refusing to play.

the issue was that scott boras took over his medical treatment and, per usual, was not keeping the white sox informed as to what was happening. considering the offseason surgery crede had, i don’t think there’s much debate that he wasn’t physically able to play the latter part of the season.

by larry on Apr 11, 2009 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Uhh

He was playing in the minors. Granted he was hurt, I understand that. But you don’t think Boras was urging him to not play? It takes two to tango.

Its more Boras then Crede, but still…

"...and when it comes to baseball, we have two favorite clubs: the Go-Go White Sox...and whoever plays the Cubs!!!"

by 815Sox on Apr 11, 2009 9:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

someone probably should have been urging him not to play.

his back was fucked. you want to blame boras for something, blame him for advising crede to not get the surgery he had this offseason the prior offseason. don’t blame boras for telling the guy who was horseshit in a few games in the minors when he tried to come back that he was done.

Yeah... a real shame

the guy who was OPSing .539 and struggling defensively through July and his attempted comeback didn’t just fight through the injury and potentially screw himself over longterm. Who would that have benefited exactly? But oh, I forgot… it’s simply a case of not being Chicago Tough!

by CatBrains on Apr 11, 2009 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The keys to success for the big Cuban

He seems to be the easiest pitcher ever to tell if he is on or not. 3 things that need to be working.

1. As a necessary condition: the splitter working – strikes at the bottom of the zone at least 50% of the time and all of them at the bottom or below the zone.

2. No dropping down in his delivery. Stupidest thing ever. Just gets lit up everytime he does as it removes the splitter from the equation.

3. Accuracy of the fastball.

Basically as soon as you see any of the above 3 not going well you can count on the Count getting lit up.

Since that appears to be gone for the moment – let BA have his chance. (At least the pitchers will have the best defense in CF behind them)

Tthe steals or attempts to stretch singles into doubles aren’t even close, we are thrown out by 2-5 steps… really frustrating to watch a guy finally get on base and proceed to get thrown out with ease

Month?

The injury was so bad they had to amputate.

by CatBrains on Apr 11, 2009 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

my bad. it's lillibridge who is leading off now that getz has died.
With the Twins throwing left-hander Francisco Liriano Saturday, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen went with Brent Lillibridge as his latest leadoff hitter, the third in five games.

Lillibridge was penciled in as the second baseman, giving left-handed hitter Chris Getz a day off.

The move was one of several for the Sox, who were trying to break a three-game losing streak against their Central Division nemesis. Paul Konerko was the DH in place of leftt hitting Jim Thome and Wilson Betemit was at first base.

Also, Brian Anderson started in center field in place of Dewayne Wise and Corky Miller was catcher in place of A. J. Pierzynski.

for some reason I am expecting a long and shitty game.

by LT_sox_fan on Apr 11, 2009 11:13 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't understand the Balk rule

well I do sort of, but the calling of it seems very arbitrary, Richard got called for a balk last night after a run down that would have graced a Stan and Ollie movie. Hawk thought it was bollocks, Stone ( who I really like btw, what an improvement, knows what he is talking about ) was non committal.
So I’d like to ask the more experienced people on here, did he get a bad call or not? Because in my view after that he lost his command, more stuff going on his head about being not very good about throwing to first again. I’m not saying it was a pivotal moment, but it certainly didn’t help us.

I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but chaos, hostility, and murder.

by hoodlight on Apr 11, 2009 12:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

it looked like a balk in live action to me.

replays a bit more inconclusive. at any rate, the home plate umpire should not be making that call. the guy who has the best angle is the first base umpire. if he didn’t see a need to call it, then i think it probably wasn’t a balk.

by larry on Apr 11, 2009 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

but if you watch it closely

the initial call was made by the ump behind the richard and not the home plate or 1st base umps, you can see him motion with hand that I guess indicates he is calling a balk and then home ump ran over and relayed all of that

by LT_sox_fan on Apr 11, 2009 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is somewhat arbitrary for lefties

But it depends on the style. Buehrle is often accused of having a balk move, but he has an advantage because his pickoff motion is very smooth.

I didn’t see a good angle with Richard, but with the rigid/jerky way he lifts and kicks his leg, it gives the illusion that he’s stopping his momentum home to redirect it towards first. From the angle behind home plate, I can see why the home plate umpire might be faked out. But Larry’s right in that it shouldn’t be his call.

Reputation may also be an issue, because Richard’s old move most definitely was a balk. So certain umps may be looking for it when he’s on the mound, more so than with other pitchers.

by Sox Machine on Apr 11, 2009 12:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's the thing about it. many lefties have a balk move, yet it's very rarely called.

one could argue that andy pettite balked with every pitch he threw. after a while, it seems umps just concede that your delivery is what it is and they aren’t going to bother calling it.

what effect the economy? a white sox hypothetical.
Most teams weren’t nearly as spend-happy during this recent bull market as they were in the late ‘90s (the percentage of revenues spent on payroll was far below 1999-01 levels), but cutbacks are probably inevitable, even for some large-market teams. Let’s say the White Sox are out of the AL Central race by the trade deadline. (I’m only picking on them because they make for a good hypothetical.) According to Forbes, the Sox made $72 million in ticket sales in 2007. We don’t have the numbers for 2008 yet, but we do know that their attendance declined about seven percent, so we’ll assume gate revenue declined at the same pace, to $67 million. If the team doesn’t play well in this economy, it’s certainly possible they could see a decline of $10 million or more in game-related revenue, counting concessions and parking (the Forbes number only takes into account tickets sold).

Without knowing anything about the team’s cash position, that’s not such an enviable spot to be in. Come July, they would almost certainly become sellers. Jim Thome, Jermaine Dye, Octavio Dotel, and Jose Contreras are making a combined $40 million this year, and could all be free agents this winter (Dye has a mutual option). Two-thirds of that—or about $27 million—will be paid out by the end of July, leaving $13 million in potential savings. If the team isn’t drawing well, the primary concern may be to shed payroll, even if it means getting slightly less in terms of talent.

it's bad, i guess

but i’m sure there are plenty of teams with vets that don’t get to write off 40 million in salary at the end of the year. they’ve been planning to replace those players for a while. it seems like it’s a pretty normal situation across the league, which is why i figured kenny will be buying if at all possible.
