Pods Returns - A Knight in The Castle
So last night my girlfriend and I made the drive up to Fort Mill, SC, to see the mighty Knights take on the Durham Bulls at 7:15 ET. It was a cool night, about 66 degrees at game time, cooling down to 60 by game's end. We had seats right behind the Knight's dugout on the 1B side, at the edge of the netting. With as many foul balls hit, I was glad we were relatively safe from a concussive blast.
I am not an experienced photographer, and my girlfriend claimed to be, so I allowed her to take the pics. She actually took some fairly solid pics on her Canon digital. I think I will bring her back for another game :)
When we first found our seats, I took out the program, told her the people I wanted pics of, and went out to find an ATM to grab some beer, hot dogs, and diet coke for the lady. It took me forever to find an ATM, and once I finally got the refreshments and sat down, I had missed the top half of the first. I did however, get to see Pods lead off.
It was kids' night at the Castle, and there were kids all around me banging thundersticks and playing with their WebKinz... needless to say I was anxious for the 7th inning to get there and for them to leave and go to bed.
As for the product on the field...
Well Lance Broadway looked fairly sharp. He was touching the low 90's on his fastball. He had a runner on 2nd with 1 out in the 2nd inning and proceeded to get the next two out. He looked poised, I must say, and never truly got into trouble until the 6th inning. I don't recall Armstrong or the pitching coach ever coming to the mound during his start.
On the other side, Wade Davis looked impressive. His fastball consistently sat in the 90-93 range. It's important to note that from my angle I couldn't see much break on the pitches, so I can't make any note on those. Velocity and location were the only two characteristics of the pitches I could note.
An interesting thing happened in the 6th when Adam Kennedy was IBB'd to get to Ray Sadler. This actually paid off as Kennedy was forced out at 2B.
Kennedy would have the only home run of the game, coming in the 8th inning off of Adam Russell. Russell, as big as he is, must throw flat heat. He only walked one in 2 innings of work, but his fastballs got knocked around pretty good. And yes, Charlotte does carry pretty well.
Pods would single to the opposite field(!) and made only routine plays in CF. One ball got over his head and he proceeded to miss the catch at the wall. At least there were no big-time goofs this time.
Wassermann pitched a solid 9th, giving up just one hit. He didn't strike anyone out. I don't believe he touched 90 once.
Armstrong managed a hit in the ninth, a screaming double to the wall, and this was the only highlight of his night at the plate. He didn't look so good during the rest of his at bats.
I hope to spend more time on my next recap, and go more in depth, but for now I must go to work. I leave you all with about 70 pictures from the night. Enjoy the pictures of the deliveries my gf took.
Oh and sorry about the pun in the title... I couldn't resist!
The link to the picture album is above...
Here's the link to the box scores and the recap

haha...
I think she was just anxious to show me how good of a photographer she was.
She of course had no understanding of baseball’s minor league system, nor how much the players got paid, nor how long they stayed there.
Of course, this was an interesting night for us to see a game, as we got the chance to see our top prospects in Broadway, Armstrong, Russell, Wassermann and Pods of our team, and Brignac, Davis for the Rays. I tried to impress upon her what a rare opportunity this was for us :) She was just glad I took her to a game and bought her food and drink, heh.

Speaking of concussive blasts, Shoeless:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/the_bonus/04/14/deadly.baseballs/index.html
It was a wonder he was even walking. On May 26 of that year, McLaughlin, a relief pitcher for the A’s, had started the eighth inning of a losing effort against the White Sox. He got the first two batters out, then threw a 91-mph sinker to Harold Baines, Chicago’s second-year right fielder. Baines couldn’t have hit it better. The ball blasted off his bat at 104 mph, dipping and rising like a knuckleball. McLaughlin, all 6’ 5" of him, rose out of his follow-through to catch it. “Sinker down and away?” Baines says. “That’s where I’m supposed to hit the ball: back up the middle. Unfortunately his face was in the way.”
You cold, Bainsey. You cold.

speaking of swisher
Just listen to his take on how he struck out Kapler.
“Seventy-two — up and away,” Swisher said of the pitch for strike three. “I got ahead early and expanded the zone.”

Here's Bill Simon's interview
The executive producer of HBO’s critically-acclaimed show THE WIRE, David Simon talks with Bill Moyers about inner-city crime and politics, storytelling and the future of journalism today. After a dozen years covering crime for the BALTIMORE SUN, David Simon left journalism to write books and tell stories for NBC and HBO, including his Peabody-winning cop show THE WIRE, which looked at the drug wars and the gritty underbelly of the inner-city. Simon is now producing the pilot for a series about musicians in post-Katrina New Orleans, called TREME.

EU Govts are looking to make as much money as possible to pay for an ever increasing public budget. Drugs are something that can make em billions for very little effort.

Phil Rogers Baiting Kenny Williams
Rudy Jaramillo has done it again. The Rangers’ hitting coach has helped a struggling hitter get on track, this time Andruw Jones. He’s killing the ball, justifying the patience shown him in spring training. Texas will look to trade him if it isn’t in the AL West race, and he has interested White Sox general manager Ken Williams in the past.

Cheat, Larry...
Thanks for the nifty editing. I couldn’t figure out how to get the pics up in this page, so I’m glad you both took the initiative to do that for me.
My head hurt last night when I got back here around 11:30 (from the coors light drafts, no doubt) so I didn’t feel like publishing this last night. Today, I had to work… but hopefully next time I can have some more meat and not just a lot of pics!
As for the g/f… yeah she enjoyed taking the pics. She was especially enamoured with how big Adam Russell is. I think he’s the biggest ball player she’s ever seen.
