Mike MacDougal: In Memoriam
July 26, 2006 - April 21, 2009
We are gathered here today to remember Robert Meiklejohn "Mike" MacDougal. Mike came to us from the Kansas City Royals for Daniel Cortes and Tyler Lumsden. Today, he leaves us.
Since The Arsonist was very good at his craft, it is difficult to choose just one favorite Mike MacDougal moment. However, I think May 18, 2007 will always stick in my mind. Letting two inherited runners score and then three more of your own - that's the very essence of burning it down.
Please add your memory - or at least your name - to the guestbook below.

Yep..that pretty much sums it all up
Wish I could make 2 million for doing nothing for the next 5 months.
Only this photo was taken during a win and not when he had actually lit anything on fire...their expressions are fitting nevertheless. I'd like a picture of Ozzie's non-butt-slap. Cold as ice!
...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.

yeah I remember the caption saying they were congratulating him there
definitely looks like he is about to get beat up
I'll miss that familiar sinking feeling I'd get every time I saw Ozzie call him in when the game was still within reach.
...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.
How marvelous that a newly risen member of our family

I refuse to post anything referencing this alleged “death”, as the last 2 Memoriums have proven to be slightly premature. Until Mac is on my doorstep with a stake in his heart I believe he can be resurrected.

The arsonist comes in protecting a 2 run lead with 2 outs in the 8th . . . faces 5 batters, retiring none, throws 25 pitches and 7 strikes. Exits game, Sox are down 3, he allows 2 inherited runners to score along with 3 of this own. Gonna miss the good times . . .

Besides his ineffectiveness,
we need somebody capable of giving us multiple innings out of our bullpen right now. I imagine if Egbert falters, we’ll see Broadway up next. I’m kinda optimistic about either one being at least satisfactory in that role.
already have richard and carrasco.
seems getting people out is more important at this point.
SSS twitter race: me or the cheat? http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Well, of course.
But with the way they’re handling Linebrink like he’s gonna break any second, Dotel’s run of health(I’m crossing my fingers) and because I think there is rational justification to consciously cut all of the starter’s innings (there are reasons for each individual, I believe)…..I think the fact that he profiles more like an innings guy than a MacDougal is particularly important too.
I think the fact that we don't have anyone else
besides Egbert or Broadway is particularly important.
We need more cubans!

That’s OK. He’s in bad reliever heaven….where everyone throws a scoreless inning.

nix is on a rehab assignment, hatch.
i’m sure beckham won’t be harmed by allowing nix to play a few games at SS for the barons.
SSS twitter race: me or the cheat? http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
See, that's where you're clearly wrong.
Spring training time in the field at 2B is one thing, but having him move there during the season is clearly going to screw him up for life. Look what happened to Bobby Crosby. Fer Chrissakes.
You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.
- HSA 01/07/09
you're right. three games is too much. i mean, they already pulled beckham from the game last night, clearly because his swing, defense, and attitude all went to shit in a matter of seven innings.
he’s done. maybe we can trade gordon for masset.
SSS twitter race: me or the cheat? http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
i'm not worried about him being harmed
but why jerk him around if you don’t have to….unless it is all part of the top secret master plan that we are not privvy to. wonder if farmio was involved in the decision.

and i think it might be somewhat difficult on jayson to be jerked around by going straight from extended ST, where he’s presumably been teeing off on guys who will be in rookie league (again) this june, to charlotte.

I’ll go with 5/8/07 at Minnesota.
Javy pitched a great 7 innings (seriously) and we were ahead 4-1 going into the bottom of the 8th.
Mike came in and on a mere 13 pitches, was able to yield:
Single to Redmond, Single to Punto (redmond to 2b), Double to Bartlett (scoring Redmond, Punto to 3B). If that 7-8-9 doesn’t strike fear in the heart of men, I don’t know a 7-8-9 that would.
From there, Thornton got a groundout that led to a 2nd run. Then Aardsma came in and gave up a single, tying the game at 4.
That’s where the game really got enjoyable. Going to extra innings, we brought out not just Andy Sisco, but also SSS favorite, Nick Masset.
Andy gave up a double to Castillo, then struck out Kubel. Nick came in, IBB’ed Hunter, Popped up Cuddyer, leading to the all to predictable, Morneau walk off.
Lest we forget, that without Mike’s 8th inning heroics, neither of those fine gentlemen would have done us the honor of pitching in such a critical situation.

what cheat penned on opening day
Nick Masset is major league pitcher. Against Cleveland. In the first two weeks of the season — Masset began last season with 9.2 innings of solid work against the Indians before he faced another club. He then posted an ERA over 8 in his next 29 innings before closing out his major league tour with another scoreless outing against the Indians. It’s almost as if the Indians are making him look good when they have these big leads just to ensure that Masset is on the roster for the rest of the season.
In all seriousness, Masset pitched well today, allowing just 2 baserunners in 4+ innings. He helped make what could have been a disaster of a game into an exciting game with a terrible outcome.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
Very, very true.
He single-handedly cost us some wins that year and put us in prime position to take Becksy.

Oooo!!!
A classic gem from SSH:
I don’t want to see MacDougal gone… He has been pretty good in his career and one awful season doesn’t make me think he will suck in 2008. It’s hard to find a reliever with 97 MPH stuff that breaks. He could easily have a bounce-back season.
