Besides, the photo caption has a recap with a nice lil tidbit
John Danks led the White Sox to their first victory in their road grays this season.
Looking at the pitch by pitch data for BA since Wise went down
I was thinking I could count on one hand the number of PA he didn’t wait til at least the 3rd pitch to swing… so here’s some useless numbers based on a tiny sample:
27 PA, 118 total pitches
4.37 P/PA
80 pitches not swung on: 60 balls, 20 strikes
38 pitches swung on: 16 in play, 12 foul, 10 strikes
2.44 PBFS/PA (avg pitches taken before first swing (or walk/backwards K))
0 foul outs
It looked like BA had decided that swinging is for fools, though he may be loosening up lately: he has swung at the first pitch 3 of the last 8 PA. Oh, the number of PA where he took at least the first 2 pitches: 9
He looks like a real hitter when he delays the bat head
Twitter: @SouthSideCheat
SouthSideSox on Facebook
moar
20 PA seeing at least 4 pitches (18 seeing 5+) resulted in all 6 walks and 7 hits for a line of .500/.650/.571
7 PA where he saw 3 or fewer pitches resulted in outs, 1K
doh, missed 2 PA
numbers stay pretty much the same other than 1 PA seeing only 2 pitches and getting a hit!
now these are interesting stats.

My fear is that his numbers will drop dramatically when pitchers adjust
Based on the past few seasons, I assumed pitchers figured they could throw out of the strike zone and let BA get himself out. Pretty soon they will realize what he is doing and starting mixing in more strikes. I hope BA can handle it. Should be interesting.
All part of his maturational process.
If he’s a ballplayer he’ll adjust. If not, he’s got the honeys.

yeah, the 50% ball rate has got to drop.
it already has somewhat (hard not to when 12 of the first 13 pitches were balls), but the extra week of being a master of plate discipline can’t hurt.
hell, maybe the adjustment already happened: all 6BB came in the first 14 PA, and 5/7 hits came in the last 12 PA.

That was a nice little game today.
Danks and Floyd have been good… Buehrle has done well… Colon has been pretty good… Jose not so much. But if you look at the games contreras has pitched- he has had 2 mediocre starts and one bad one (last night) .. I think he will be ok. I would still take him over any other 5th starter in our division.
Kenwo4life=ratings
Aubrey Huff thinks John Danks is a good pitcher, too
“If you ask me, he is one of the most underrated lefties in baseball,” Huff said. “You look at the second half of last year, and he really started clicking. I really would compare his changeup to a Johan Santana changeup. It’s pretty nice. That changeup is probably his best pitch. It makes him really tough to gauge.”
From the trib recap
White Sox: Trying to roll a hard six.
that's no small compliment.
he got the star treatment on baseball tonight this evening, too. (though it was phillips doing the breakdown) nevertheless, our boy is a legitimate number 1. hopefully we can say that for a long time to come.

Yes, making decisions without considering evidence is totally the way to go
And if circumstances lead to a different conclusion and you change your mind, you are a total pussy.
Absolute certainty regardless of proof for the win!
White Sox: Trying to roll a hard six.
Humans are not robots. Humans can improve.
I actually watched games in 07’ (can’t say i am for certain many of you did), I saw what Danks could do, I saw Gavin’s curve ball fooling hitters. That was all the “evidence” I needed. I didn’t need some stat to tell me how good or bad player X was going to be. Those same computers also say these guys were going to regress. I guess they can’t calculate how hard a player works…

Man, you should be a pro scout
BTW, Gavin’s ERA stands at 4.74 and it’s a whopping 2 weeks into the season. It’s a little soon to say his performance won’t regress from last season.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing your picks to click for this season. Do you have a newsletter?
by hitlesswonder on Apr 23, 2009 8:43 AM CDT up reply actions
he had 1 really really terrible game that inflated that ERA
but you wouldn’t know that unless you watched the games

I don’t think anyone has ever questioned Gavin’s curveball. Anyone who has seen him up close, within 50 feet in person would say.. “Yes, that man has an unhittable pitch.” The problem is he can’t throw it consistently enough, or hasn’t in his career for anyone to be able to assume he will ever be a top of the line starter.
If he regresses to a 3 or 4 for the next 5 years we still got ourselves a solid enough deal either way. I wouldn’t worry so much about him regressing, when that still makes him a solid major league pitcher.

So you are saying one third of his starts have sucked...
If he keeps up that ratio, he won’t have a good year.
Also, if you only consider good performances a lot of players look good.
I’m not saying Gavin will be bad this season, I’m just it’s a little soon to say he the “computers” are wrong and he won’t regress given that a) it’s 3 games in for him and b) he has an ERA a run higher than last season so far.
Oh, I’m pretty sure at least a couple people here watch the games…but they probably do it on a computer so it may not count.

You don't have to be Nate Silver to understand implications of metrics
Just open-minded and seeing the big picture. Sure it’s always great to understand the “how” and “why” but understanding the implications of things is more important in the big picture.
You think Billy Beane knows how to run a regression? Hell now, but he knows how to pay people to do it for him. He knows how to interpret the results.

Isn't it pretty standard for sports fans to love or hate, have faith or lack faith, in all players? I am a huge lover of Paulie, but I have also spent innumerable evenings screaming about how much I hate him and he sucks all the same.
I don’t understand why everything has to be so absolute and engraved….it’s a baseball team, subject to streaks and slumps, strikes and gutters, good seasons and bad seasons….and the fans will react accordingly.

Danks- This is my guy. I think if he can adopt Buehrle’s aggressiveness towards attacking the strike zone, he will make huge strides across the board. He just got behind in the count too much by nibbling at the corners. I don’t think there is any question about his stuff, and considering his age I would say his potential is really high.

Ramirez wtf?
I’m trying to keep my cool about this, but I’m starting to wonder if Alexi’s going to come around. If so, when? Is he not 100%? Are his mechanics off? Does he not heat up ‘til May or June? It’s getting a tad worrisome.
he did hurt his leg sliding into home near the end of spring training...

Joe Mauer (25 DXL)
Mauer was on the field Wednesday, going 3-for-4 and catching for six innings in extended spring training. He’ll shift across the complex to High-A Fort Myers to begin his planned rehab. Expected to last six games, he’s expected to catch at least four of them, including a set of back-to-back games. The hitting isn’t expected to be much of a challenge, but Mauer will stay in the low minors largely because of the weather. While he is doing everything well enough to head out, he’s hardly out of the woods. Multiple sources say that Mauer is requiring extensive treatments before and after games to stay functional, and that he’s “on the edge.” One concern that someone within the organization had was the “handover,” where Mauer has to go from the rehab staff at the Fort Myers complex back to the Twins’ regular staff. While they’re certainly qualified, it’s not the same people doing the same things with the same knowledge, so there is always a chance of a hiccup in the process. Mauer is expected back just after May 1.

It appears to be a pretty weak draft class but who knows, maybe that’s better for the Sox (in the sense that more question marks will mean a pretty high variance of opinions on non-Strasburg players). Four picks in the top 70 (or thereabouts), right?
