After watching Jose Contreras retire 12 of the 13 batters he faced, Bartolo Colon is stating his own case Saturday to become the White Sox’s fourth starter.
Relying on a tailing fastball, Colon has struck out five in three innings of relief against Arizona. Colon struck out the first four batters he faced and has allowed one hit – an infield hit to Conor Jackson with two out in the seventh.
Colon is demonstrating what general manager Ken Williams anticipated this spring, that Colon has the ability to suddenly increase his velocity while locking up left-handed hitters by moving them off the plate, only to run his fastball back to the inside corner. His fastball was clocked at 93 mph.
The Sox have a 2-0 lead entering the top of the eighth. Carlos Quentin hit a double and scored on Alexei Ramirez’s two-out single in the third, and Brent Lillibridge hit a leadoff double in the fifth, stole third base and scored on Christian Marrero’s sacrifice fly.
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
Contreras allowed one hit through the first four innings Saturday and retired 10 consecutive batters against Arizona.
Contreras threw 37 of 55 pitches for strikes against an experienced Diamondbacks lineup. Stephen Drew was the only hitter to solve Contreras as he hit a two-out single in the first.
The most noticeable difference in Contreras was his ability to throw his breaking pitches for strikes. He struck out three, walked none and has pitched more effeciently in the third and fourth innings.
