CHICAGO - The White Sox added pitching depth to their minor league system Sunday by signing left-hander Jimmy Gobble to a minor league contract.

Gobble, 27, will report to Triple-A Charlotte this week. He has a 22-23 record with a 5.23 ERA over parts of six seasons with Kansas City.

just don't ever, ever let him face a righty and he can be serviceable.

the white sox need some lefty depth. when i saw the royals released him, i was sure KW was going to grab him then. but, yeah, if he’s on the team that means some bad things have occurred at the major league level.

I just remember last year my dad and I were at a marathon game

and in the midst of Konerko’s struggles my dad said “if he can’t hit this guy he should retire”… sure enough Konerko hit a walk off homer. My dad (who hates konerko more than me) then proclaimed “the only guy he would have homered against was Jimmy Fucking Gobble”!

He can pitch to Konerko when he's in a slump.

I’d say the minor league salary is a small price to pay to jump start your 12 mil investment. Good job, KW.

What the hell is so bad about this move?

The guy has had success in the majors(06,07). I personally think he’s better that Nick Masset when healthy. GO SOX!

There was an incident a few years ago. The Bulls were killing the Knicks, scrubs were playing out the clock, and the fans were screaming at them to score 100 points for free Big Macs. They took a ton of shots, Knicks took offense and they tried to fight some Bulls players.

MB's arm hurts all the time.
Manager Ozzie Guillen revealed that ace Mark Buehrle coped with a small bout of arm stiffness this spring but Buehrle never thought his opening day assignment was ever in doubt.

“I never thought I’d miss my start,” said Buehrle, added that he has pitched with pain for 10 years.

off subject

any opinions on mlb gameday audio vs the mlb at bat iphone app?

iphone app sounds like a better deal, but i’m worried about streaming audio over my data connection killing the battery.

by hugh on Apr 5, 2009 3:16 PM CDT reply actions

pandora doesn't kill mine, though i really only have it on like a half-hour/hour at a time in transit

here’s to hoping the mlb app guys are just as frugal.

if you’re considering the audio package, you’re probably figuring on being near a computer when you’re consuming the game anyways. if so, you can just plug in for power there if you’re worried about battery life. the app at least offers something that’s always-on and more mobile than a laptop. however, the audio package allows the option of using different computers to connect, where the app bolts you to your phone/ipod for access.

just my 2 cents.

I don’t want my beer to taste like fruit or honey. I want pussy to taste that way.

by thatshortkid on Apr 5, 2009 3:40 PM CDT up reply actions

those were my thoughts exactly

pandora doesnt drain mine either, and i have fallen asleep listening to pandora witht the speakers a few times. a few hours later id wake up and the battery would only been drained by about a third to half battery. i think listening to a game would be alright

i suck - the sox dont - SSH2005

by BoeJouma on Apr 5, 2009 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions

the proof in the pudding is going to be portability, really

pandora handles the user being mobile very well and switches between networks easy and without drops in service. it buffers if there’s a break and tries to give the user a seamless experience. the public radio tuner app, for example, does not and their people are supposedly working on fixing that. it doesn’t reconnect if there’s a switch in network and frequently drops off and requires the user to reconnect. if i can turn on the app, pick a game, and go from wifi to 3g to edge or whatever while i’m traveling and don’t have to touch it, then it’s successfully replaced the xm option for listening to games on a portable in those service areas that support the phone.

The White Sox ended our first spring in Glendale with the third-highest per game attendance mark in club history, trailing only the MJ spring and 2006 (post World Series).

also, for the two people on here who are interested:

remember, lots of people just sit on the lawn.

tuscon electric was about 11,500. camelback is about 13,000 – though pretty sure they squeezed in more for the cubs. the difference is about 2000 in terms of actual fixed seating.

Masset beats out Homer Bailey for long relief role

Need I say more?

Bailey and Owings had a spirited battle for the rotation’s fifth spot this spring. Bailey finished with a 2.61 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings over six games. Owings had a 1.52 ERA in six starts with 24 strikeouts.

There was consideration to keep Bailey in the long reliever role that ultimately went to Nick Masset, who was out of options.

Colon "toes" nothing. That implies a nimbleness akin to a Nureyev. I beleive he "platypussed" the shit out of that mound.

Jermaine has a plan
Dye laid out his plan for dealing with the cold. He wants to stay away from wearing a great amount of extra clothes because then he starts to feel bulky. So, Dye will wear some sleeves and possibly tights underneath his uniform pants, while putting on liberal doses of Vaseline.

“Vaseline kind of keeps the wind chill from going through,” Dye said. “That’s the biggest thing.”
