Dammit.

Who schedules Chicago during the first week in April? Thank you, mlb.

keep it to a game thread or something like that, people will want to look at this again and don’t want to see a pair of bollocks every time they come on, you fucking wanker.

Not only that

But couldn’t we schedule all the games on Sunday, or the first game at night? What the hell is up with scheduling are opening game at 1 p.m. on a Monday?? You are forcing your fans to miss work or miss the game. I realize during the rest of the season it’s fine, but at least make it easy to see the first game.

by Grinder in Training on Apr 5, 2009 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even better

They could start the season on a Friday night and get another weekend on the books.

by Peder on Apr 5, 2009 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why would it suck?

Would it suck more than having to play doubleheaders or on off days in the heat of summer? What really sucks is getting backed up in scheduling every year because of weather. This has been an issue long before Jack Morris’ no-no at Comiskey April 7, 1984, fer Chrissakes, which also was played in 30+ degree weather.

(A qoute from Morris: “The only time I talk to a woman when I’m naked is when she’s on top of me or I’m on top of her.” — Jack Morris, to female reporter Jennifer Frey in 1990 when she approached him in the Tiger clubhouse)

that's why they have offdays.

and it would suck for those teams because – wait for it – april dates are less desirable than summer dates (outside of opening day, and you’d get that bump anyway whether it’s first week or third week). money talks, as you well know.

April dates are less desirable in the North.

Big crowds out West and in the South when it’s warm. I hear you – it’d be a crapshoot – but why not attempt to not have OD the first week of April?

Guffey said he told the driver, "I'm just asking you to slow down. I don't want trouble, but there are kids out."

The man hit Guffey in the face, then "took him to the ground, where he struck him some more with his hands, then bit off his ear," city patrolman M. Chase Hightower reported.

"Guffey stated the man then got up and spit his ear out at him," Hightower wrote.

white sox #22 in BP's initial "hit list".
Unwise: Despite winning last year’s AL Central title, the South Siders forecast to finish well below .500 for the second time in three years. Thanks to their ballpark, the lineup will produce plenty of pop, but the insertion of OBP-challenged DeWayne Wise and Alexei Ramirez atop the order will cost them, as will a shaky infield defense featuring the latter at shortstop. Add to that a whole lot of regression for Gavin Floyd (projected for a 5.00 ERA) and an ugly back end of the rotation, and it could be a long season on the South Side. (779 RS/829 RA)

In theory he would see more fastballs batting 2nd, but I don’t think Ozzie would want to take the bat out of his hands for situational hitting. I believe Ozzie wants him to continue to be an aggressive run producing force. Just my 2 cents.

what about Brian Anderson?

He has speed, is one of the few players on the team that can put down a bunt, and it is not set in stone that Wise will fail although it is a strong possibility. I believe Ozzie will try BA there before Missle. If both Wise and BA fail I can see Alexei moving to center and Williams calling up Beckham. Not sure if Beckham is an ideal #2 hitter but whatever.

BA needs a censored version of that played when he comes up to not hit, walk or bunt.

by Grinder in Training on Apr 6, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I seem to remember him putting down a crucial bunt or 2 down the stretch

He is going to get out anyways, so you might as well have him make outs by attempting to bunt!

I seem to remember him blowing a squeeze bunt that helped extend the Orioles game four months.

And also botching a sac bunt attempt, only to homer later in the at-bat against the Cubs.

Save the bunting for Wise and Getz. Alexei can bunt, too, but if he’s hitting sixth, he should never get the sign.

"down the stretch" -wtgtd

as in he actually executed a couple of them in the 2nd half of the season. I may be wrong but that is just what I recall. If like you said ,he is an instant out anyways, then why not try to get some type of positive production out of him? I never said bat him leadoff though, just #2 over ARam.

why bat a guy who is an instant out #2?

i feel like 8 or 9 would really be the place for BA whenever he plays

I am not implying bat him #2 because he is an instant out.

I am implying bat him 2nd so he can make productive outs. I am not sure he could even make productive outs though.

i want a guy batting 2nd who can get hits

and be on base for the guys behind him to knock them in. only time i care about productive outs are when 1 run wins the game.

Alexei is an on base machine?

Didn’t think so. He can get hits but he won’t be on base enough to justify batting him there. Plus why would you EVER want Ozzie taking the bat out of his hands? Trust me I am not very happy about this either.

i don't think i've ever read sickels use such strong language, especially on the front page of his site.
I think putting Rick Porcello in the Detroit rotation is batshit insane. In my opinion, even the best prospects need a good dose of Double-A. Most of them need Triple-A. Porcello is very talented, but he is NOT Dwight Gooden or Bob Feller. The wonderful spring training he had resulted in a 2.30 ERA, which is sharp, but also a 8/5 K/BB and 17 hits in 15.2 innings, hardly a dominant ratio set. Maybe it will work, but it is not a risk I would take if I was the Tigers braintrust.

I'd say most of the things Detroit does is batshit insane the past couple of years.

Of course, we have hind-sight. Still, I’m glad our guys aren’t as extension happy as some teams are and, seemingly, never rush their prospects.

On the subject of extensions(and long contracts in general), I think the last couple of years are a great example of why they aren’t very good ideas after arb years. Look at some of the contracts teams like the Mariners and Tigers are stuck wit, and then they have to eat 14 mil… yuck.

i think i've got something that will help.

since our offseason has been extended by a day this seems like a good time for a lesson in the art of non-escalating verbal self-defense. there’s so much information there that one could probably spend the whole time between now and first pitch tomorrow learning. it’s quite simple really. you start in the sunporch, then go to the kitchen, continue on to the wine cellar, and end up in the nursery.

brian anderson would've caught that...
