I know these accidents happen everyday, most recently in Donte Stallworth's drunk driving incident, but it's still shitty.

I was listening to the A's vs. Angels last night and the dude pitched a good game, pitching himself out of trouble on multiple occasions.

Bottom line, if you're going to drink or get high, call a cab.

Did. And it only took a second.

Ninety percent I’ll spend on good times, women and Irish whiskey. The other 10 percent I’ll probably waste. Wait, I'm married to a Jewish woman. Strike that.

I guess not - I was saying you were correct in that it takes no time at all to sign up.

I did it at your behest. A good suggestion – they are grieving on that site.

What did you think I meant?

I meant the loss of a child, from a parent's perspective.

That, as a parent, you can imagine the overwhelming grief they must be feeling.
Sorry I wasn’t clearer.

I got it now. Sorry - I misunderstood.

And I do understand. If there was anything that would make me go homicidal it’s if someone took the life of my girl. Absolutely.

Are you OK?

Not saying it was one way or the other (like any of us could assess that anyway), but just adding to rhythm's advice of not operating a vehicle impaired - you could be sober as a judge and still get killed by someone else who isn't.

Part of being safe on the road, is knowing what to look out for, and little awarenesses that get taken for granted quite often.
Sometimes these things are preventable. Sometimes they aren’t.
That’s all I’m saying.

A girl from my high school (one year younger than me) was killed at age 20 a few years back at an intersection by my house. Same situation. I was stopped at the light the next day and watched her father on the ground, head in hands, weeping at the corner of the intersection where some guy ran the red and killed his daughter. One of the saddest images I have in my memory.

I hate shit like this so much.

...and then some depressed fucked-cake eating.

You both roll your eyes when I say “drive carefully”, or “be safe”, but there’s a reason I do it: fear.

Well, MV's showed up as flagged, so I hid it, especially since it was overly provocative. And you are privvy to it.

I hid my own comments to Chi because I initially thought there was a misunderstanding. You don’t agree?

i'm not privy to it. i'm not a moderator.

sunlight is the best disinfectant. when people post stupid shit, it should be left there for all the world to see and for people to point out its ridiculousness. and i don’t think moderating abilities should be used by you guys to remove things you regret posting. if it’s personal, don’t post it on a public message board. you can ask the head man if i’m off here but hiding should be used fairly conservatively in accordance with prior practice.

by larry on Apr 9, 2009 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Things:

1. I agree about stupid things and responses to them. Sunlight for sure. That said:
2. I was tempted to cloak the “you absolutely disgust me” remark. It struck me as a personal attack and over the line. I didn’t though, figuring Cheat would do it if he felt the same.
3. Personal I’m fine with. A cloaked convo takes place often here among the editors, and since it’s personal why bother every one with it? Nothing to see, move along? No harm, no foul?
4. I think WU and I do use the powers conservatively, and for the greater good. Today for example, I cloaked the referenced personal posts and the one YOU requested to be cloaked. Nothing more.

You’re right, the head man can decide whatever he wants. I really don’t give a shit.

if it's personal, there's this thing called email. very effective.

i think it sends a poor message to the rest of the community when certain people are hiding their own comments. and, as a fyi, if people don’t leave the page, your “hidden” comments stay up for everyone to see until they refresh the page. you know, like when you’re inviting people for a drink.

and, yes, that comment probably was quite personal. but people who think drunk driving is fine get what they deserve.

Maybe it's automatic if a post goes pink?

"I never had sex with that Governor" -
Roland Burris

by Chiburb on Apr 9, 2009 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it's not.

I did it, and I’d do it again. And I cloaked my own comments because I wanted to make sure a potential misunderstanding over a very sentsitive topic (death) was not escalated inappropriately. And it was a misunderstanding. If you want it uncloaked, fine.

But to generalize that “too much is hidden” is not only inaccurate but ridiculous. I bet I’ve cloaked 2 other times. Today was over one issue. I didn’t cloak your comment because it was insensitive. It got hidden because I cloaked a “flagged” comment that your post was attached to. I’ve never thought to cloak overly personal comments, no matter how brutal, since it’s a free country. But this is the first “flag” I’ve cloaked.

Not that I owe you a response, larry, but there it is.

Ninety percent I’ll spend on good times, women and Irish whiskey. The other 10 percent I’ll probably waste. Wait, I'm married to a Jewish woman. Strike that.

by winningugly on Apr 9, 2009 2:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i'm aware of how the hiding works.

and i stand by my statement that this thread had way too much of it. i didn’t like it when editors hid their own comments previously and now that i have a say, albeit a small one, i still don’t. it sends the wrong message. i recall a patrick l kennedy.

by larry on Apr 9, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're a funny guy -

advocating a cloak on another thread today in one sentence and comparing a cloaking of a sensitive personal comment (and it was made under the covers – not like it was publicand then hidden) to some DB. But whatever TF, larry, if it means a lot to you to see the commentary, fine.

Now take your ball and play, OK?

Ninety percent I’ll spend on good times, women and Irish whiskey. The other 10 percent I’ll probably waste. Wait, I'm married to a Jewish woman. Strike that.

by winningugly on Apr 9, 2009 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think the difference is obvious.

one is hiding the comments of another person, which were serving no purpose whatsoever. that is your job. another is deciding to edit your own comments. it’s a slippery slope. here you don’t want a misunderstanding; one might be left wondering if you wouldn’t want to clear up “misunderstandings” regarding your opinions on other topics, just like patrick l kennedy wanted to. sunshine is best. seems like whatever misunderstanding you may or may not have been having was cleared up just fine.

by larry on Apr 9, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tell you what, larry - since you are good at spotting trends

and getting on people for “small sample sizes”. You tell me when you can extrapolate a trend off one thread dealing with a relatively volatile subject unrelated to baseball. You do that.

In the meantime, I don’t have time for being second-guessed about my judgment where appealing to concern over a sensitive issue – if I am to err, it will be on the side of caution where people’s feelings are concerned. If that’s too patrick l. kennedy – like for you, take the privilege of cloaking away from me. It won’t be of concern. Otherwise, let me do my “job”.

Is this in the sunshine enough for you?

Ninety percent I’ll spend on good times, women and Irish whiskey. The other 10 percent I’ll probably waste. Wait, I'm married to a Jewish woman. Strike that.

Sounds stupid, but I had him in my one very deep fantasy league…I’d followed him a bit through the angels system and watched him pitch last night…he looked great.

My condolences go out to his family and the Angels organization, a very classy bunch.

i have. the van driver was drunk on a suspended license as well

i have trouble believing a 22 year old kid, after having a huge night at the ballpark, didn’t have a cocktail, especially given the area he was in. that, and a friend’s brother-in-law is FPD and apparently had told him about it last night and related his conversation to me at lunch today. i’m not saying whoever was behind the mitsu’s wheel was drunk and loopy and shit, but i don’t think they were coming from bible study, either. regardless, what happened is tragic and out of their control. sorry if i phrased it poorly.

I don’t want my beer to taste like fruit or honey. I want pussy to taste that way.

and here's a big fucking surprise
The minivan driver fled the crash on foot and was captured about 30 minutes later. Police identified him as Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside, and said he had a suspended license because of a previous drunken driving conviction.

Preliminary results indicated Gallo’s blood-alcohol level was “substantially over the legal limit” of .08 percent, police Lt. Kevin Hamilton said.

Gallo was interviewed by investigators Thursday afternoon. Hamilton said Gallo would be booked later on three counts of murder, three counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence of alcohol.

I think that has to do with the intoxicated usually being the drivers and initiating the accident

I’m sure there’s a study to compare intoxicated vs. sober victims, but I don’t think the studies most cited make that much of an effort.

Either way, it’s still a cruel irony.

You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

A 22-year-old man was charged with three murder counts and drunken driving Friday in the crash that killed Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others.

Andrew Thomas Gallo ran a red light in his minivan early Thursday and broadsided a car carrying Adenhart and three friends, police said.

“At the time of the crash, Mr. Gallo’s blood-alcohol content is estimated to be almost three times the legal limit,” Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.

Gallo could receive almost 55 years to life in prison if convicted of all charges, Rackauckas said.

the headline punishment is rarely the result.

first, he’s not going to trial. second, he’s not going to plead to murder. somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-30 years is a decent guess based upon what we know now.
