White Sox Offense Absent in April, Again

Photo

More photos » by Charles Rex Arbogast - AP

The White Sox offense has scored 5 runs in 3 games this season. The only reason we're not talking about a sweep, or 3 blowouts, is that Sox pitching has allowed only 2 run in each of the 3 games.

There comes a point when you have to stop giving credit to opposing pitchers and look in the mirror and say hey, our offense just sucks right now. Kyle Davies, Gil Meche and Zack Greinke pitched well, and we acknowledged that the Royals have a good top of the rotation before the season started. But you simply cannot go an entire series scoring a total of 1 run off the opposing starters.

This Sox offensive struggles are not simply a result of a lack of a leadoff hitter -- though I'm beginning to think that anyone who is penciled into the lineup to leadoff or play center field is destined for an 0-for with a couple of Ks -- The offense has sucked from top to bottom, as is seemingly a White Sox rite of spring. There's got to be a reason we seem to bring up Greg Walker every April, right?

Sixty percent of our series run total

was a result of Trey Hillman being a poor manager. Take that away and you’ve got a bases loaded-no out situation that nets one and a surrendered run that does nothing but prevent a shut out.

by Sox-35th on Apr 9, 2009 4:40 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I've liked what I've seen of Alexei at short.

But I don’t like our offensive outlook in general, and am not just saying this because of the last three games. The potentiality of Konerko, Dye, Pierzynski and Thome falling precipitiously, the uncertainty with Getz…etcetc…….we may have to look at moving him to center and bringing in Beckham…..I’m not suggesting today, but I wouldn’t wait much beyond mid-May, depending on where we’re sitting in the standings.

by dantesox on Apr 9, 2009 5:03 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Is "potentiality" like "Wessonality"? Is this Flo Henderson?

1-2 and a trend is made. I guess no team has ever made the playoffs going 1-2 out of the gate. Or scored more than 2 runs a game after averaging less than that in an opening season series.

Man up. If we see this in May I’ll start jumping up and down. For now, how about a little prespective and patience. Becks will be here shortly to save the day.

Ninety percent I’ll spend on good times, women and Irish whiskey. The other 10 percent I’ll probably waste. Wait, I'm married to a Jewish woman. Strike that.

Shit happens.

Considering it’s 3 games out of 162/3, are you serious?
Every game counts, true. But you seem to suggest that the Sox should’ve been firing on all cylinders out of the gate. I agree that the O is frustrating right now, but give it a bigger sample size. There are still signs of encouragement despite the 1-2 start.

The Sox were the baseball equivalent of a prevent defense away from being shut out in their second consecutive game

a feat that hasn’t happened since before you knew the name Monica Lewinsky…

I think that puts me well within the right to complain about a crappy offensive attack

I agree with you.

Our offense sucks right now. As long as we are not extrapolating a trend after 3 games.

But so what if they had been shutout 2 in a row? Does that mean they suck for the season?

just watched the Adenhart televised presser on an LA local...

a very sad affair. Boras was blubbering, Sciosia’s already deep baritone was down a couple of octaves. The kid had been drafted out of H.S. and had serious arm surgery before he was even signed. The Angels rolled the dice… Adenhart was not very good last season in his brief cup of joe, nor when he went back to AAA. However, he had done some serious off-season work with coaches, and — having watched the 6 inning he pitched last night — had a FB that hit 95 on the gun.

The asshole that hit tried to run, but those bad ass Anaheim cops got him.

The Sox not scoring many runs doesn't bother me as much as

the fact they had so few opportunities. Its one thing if they are getting people into scoring position and just not executing, but it seemed like for much of this series they had absolutely no chance of scoring.

Fair amount of pissing runners away on the basepaths as well.

Most noticeably in the win, which is probably why it’s not getting more play.

Ozzie in panic mode already?

IIRC, last year we didn’t see a sac bunt till the end of April – I remember commenting on it at the time because it was so un-Ozzieballish. Swish was getting OB at a +.400 clip early in the season and we were scoring a lot of runs playing softball.

Maybe someone can look it up, but I would guess that there’s already been more CS in three games than the entire month of April last year. My guess is Ozzie doesn’t trust this offense and feels he has to push a lot more buttons this year to get something going. There’s only two high OBP guys on the team, Q and Thome, and it really limits what this offense can do.

Coach says he needs more toughness. I gotta step up.

by ChicagoPete on Apr 10, 2009 6:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What good is OBP if you can't score on a single from 2nd base?

whats really pissing me off

is seeing people like Thome and JD force singles and then stand at first base for an eternity or get thrown out at second.

With their speed, it’ll take a triple of a hit to move them to second.

it's always interesting when circumstances prevent you from watching the game.

i’m not even going to think about perusing the game threads. losing 2 of 3 is disappointing, and i think we watch this offense with guarded optimism, but there aren’t any conclusions to be drawn from this series, right? do we really know anymore than we did coming in? (let alone enough to draw conclusions)

Cheat, have you considered the possible effects of recaps written directly after the game? (that you may not have the measured response that you otherwise might?) Not an attack, btw. Just a question.
