Why the hell doesn't someone sit Q down and tell him to quit hacking?

JD, Paulie, Thomer, BA, Ozzie, KW, hell, even Walker! (hahahaha, yeah, I put Walker in there as a joke)

Isn’t there some sort of “stop trying to do too much” cliche that someone can pull out so that Q can also “pull it out”? (his head from his ass, of course)

Yeah, this is a reactionary rant, but FFS, someone’s got to get through to him and if this interbubble rant can’t get the job done, then I don’t think anything will!

You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

and came up swinging today as well, although I would guess that Lee was pounding the zone.

Others have pointed this out over the last week (or longer) as well, it was just my turn to rant today.

Just to assure larry, I’m not on the ledge with this team. Yes, it seems that they are playing like crap lately, but I think things will get better after this seemingly injury-induced (poor roster construction?) rough patch. I don’t evaluate my self-worth on the success (or failure) of Ozzie and Co., so I don’t foresee any long walks off a short pier.

I will say that I did think that the Sox would be competitive in the division this year and was hoping that they would pull a rabbit out of their hats and make it into the playoffs. I think it could still happen (and no, I haven’t been smoking crack – no relapses for this bible thumper!), but it will be tight.

Bless you all for your patience and your attention.

You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

I am very, very concerned about the productivity of the players on this team.

Floyd looks like shit. I don’t know what will happen with Richard. C&C are on their last year, whatever happens happens but I’m not counting on much. The hitting has been putrid and Fields doesn’t look like much more than a corners/DH sub who may have one or two above average years in his career. When BA comes back, maybe it will get better but our CF hole has gotten bigger and bigger over the years. I smell a sale at the deadline, because I don’t see things getting much better soon.

by Daniel Berlyn on May 13, 2009 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no ledge, but the early returns are of a team that's decidedly average

which makes sense. On the pitching side, the Vazquez trade really hurts the team’s chances in 2009 — having another starter who is guaranteed 200 innings of league-average ‘ball is pretty nice. That’s not to say the trade was a bad one, just that we’re bearing the costs up-front. So not only does Colon have some big shoes to fill (hah!), but Floyd also has to repeat last year for the pitching to remain equal to last year.

Defensively, I have to imagine the left side of the infield is at least a win worse than last season’s Cabrera + Uribe/Crede bunch. Elsewhere things look about the same (perhaps a couple of runs better in CF if Anderson gets the bulk of the playing time from here on out?), give or take…

What really has hurt has been the slow start of just about every non-Danks young player (Floyd, Ramirez, Quentin, and to a lesser extent Fields). I’m hoping most of that is luck (like Quentin’s .200 BABIP despite a LD% that’s better than last year) and small sample sizes, but the early returns on the other three have not been encouraging.

by CWSKeith on May 13, 2009 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Good points all around, especially with respect to the Vazquez trade

You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

by rhythm on May 13, 2009 3:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I think the left side of the infield is way below last year

Despite Crede’s throwing problems, he still flashed mad leather, Profundo could pick it and more importantly had a cannon to first, and Orca seemed to position himself a lot better than Alexei, despite the fact that I spent 90% of the season really hating him.

The fact is a team featuring Podsednik, Lillibridge, Getz and Fields is subpar.
I kept score opening day(well tuesday after the rainout) and just had to stare at the card after I filled out our side. It stopped me in my tracks how uninspiring it was. And that was with high hopes for Konerko, Q! amd Thome. Imagine how bad things would be if Paully wasnt hitting over .300.

White Sox on pace to be shut out 32 times this year. woo!

by e-gus on May 13, 2009 4:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Joe Crede’s two-out grand slam in the 13th inning off a tired Brandon Lyon gave the Minnesota Twins a 14-10 victory over Detroit — hours after Dontrelle Willis made his first start of the season for the Tigers.

Hasn't Fields been doing the same thing?

It’s been tough for me to watch the full games because of work, school, and suckitude induced comas, but it seems like Fields gets himself into an awful lot of 0-2 counts…

by Shinons on May 13, 2009 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure

I don’t get to watch any games, and I don’t get to follow many via gameday anymore, but Fields doesn’t seem to see a lot of pitches in his ABs.

In 2007, he walked 8.4% of his PA and this year it's around 10% (due to his hot start, as you pointed out)

He put up an OBP of .308 in 2007 with a wOBA of .336. I didn’t realize his OBP was so low, lending credence to your postulation, but a wOBA of .336 is league averagish. Of course he’s putting up a wOBA of .301 so far this year…

I was under the impression that he walked more…I was wrong.

I was also under the impression he was a decent option at 3B for the next few years, and I think the jury is still out on that one..

I’m not sure how it is in the US but to call someone a Judas for an act of betrayal is a really big deal here, even though to all intents we are a secular country.

I'm not sure I understand the fascination with Swisher..,

if anything, it’s karmic justice that a bunch of these issues that the Sox have had in the early going would have been mitigated if Swisher was still here. In a sick (“sick” from our vantage point) sense it’s good to see that our (justifiably so) worst fears surrounding the Swisher trade (not only in dealing Swisher but in dealing him for a heaping pile of “mah-nure”) have come true.

by CWSKeith on May 13, 2009 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

I agree that an early producing Swisher would have made this team look MUCH better… If that’s what you said. I also agree that his return was little more than a bag of balls… If that’s what you said. I also don’t understand the Swisher hate/wish fail… If that’s what you said.
In a season that went 163 last year, his contributions, especially early, should be thanked. Don’t see how we won the Central without him.

speaking of strikeouts
Following the loss to Cleveland on Wednesday, Guillen pointed out that, "We strike out too much. Too much strikeouts. Game on the line, we strike out. People on base, we strike out. Lead off inning, we strike out. We got to cut that. That’s a big part of the game. You put the ball in play, you got a better chance. We really strike out too much.

“Even the guys who strike out … We got people who strike out more than Jimmy [Thome]. That’s a little embarrassing, you strike out more than Jim Thome, because Jim has one way. He’s not going to be on base 300 times, 150 strikeouts, 150 walks. He’s going to be a Hall of Famer. Some guys aren’t going to be Hall of Famers. They strike out too much and they have to be better.’’

Thome has 33 strikeouts, while Fields has 39.

Okay enough is enough. Walker does not know anything about hitting. How many fly outs and strikeouts can a team possibly have without realizing their are fundamental flaws in their swings? Why does Chris Getz fly out so much to soft left field now? Q, Ramirez, Fields, Lillibridge, Nix. These aren’t huge things to fix but I guess Walker has no idea what he is talking about. Can I have the job? Every time I watch Lillibridge I laugh. He has the potential but still has a brutal swing path, overstrides, and his hips drag rather than rotating. Every time Getz flys out he drags his hips rather than rotating and hitting with his hands. Obviously its easier said than done but these things continue to happen with no sign of changes. There is my rant for the day. Just don’t like to watch guys struggle when it’s not necessary.
