music thread for old timers
Due to multiple requests i am starting a new music thread. hopefully i won't get scolded for insubordination. apparently you can listen to Wilco's new album at their website:
i'm actually more of a jazz fan. old school stuff from the 30s-60s. I'm actually having a hard time getting 75 words here, so i'll tell about the best concert I ever saw. joe lovano at Yoshi's in oakland, 1996. came for the early set and they let us stay for the second set. incredible. worst jazz show: diana krall, jazz showcase on grand ave circa 1998. she had a cold and kept coughing. she quit after about half an hour and we didn't get our money back.

Diana Krall...
If she didn’t have looks and legs she wouldn’t be allowed near a recording studio. The most boring, narrow-ranged, emotionless “jazz” vocalist I’ve ever heard. And believe me: I WANTED to like her since she has 3 albums done in surround sound.
See other music thread for my latest jazz listen…

yeah i agree with that
her first couple of albums were OK, but its been a snoozefest for the past decade as far as i can tell.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

allen toussaint - the bright mississippi
i got tuned into him via the liberal east-coast media. i guess he’s been an influence to anyone coming out of new orleans in the past 50 years. a very melodic pianist with more of a popular music background, but he blows away most of what is going on in jazz nowadays. reminds me of eroll garner or cyrus chestnut. a real gem of “american” music.
Jean Luc Ponty/Toussaint were popular in my day in college.
If you like brass, even my Dad loves Bill Chase. (Get it on in the mornin’ now!)

fusion and other jazz preversions are not my bag, man.
Fusion rocks, man.
I have BS&T teed up in the car as we speak. “God Bless the Child”. Goose bumps.
Eff you kids. I was a horn player, so I am predisposed.

true story
my wife doesn’t want my girl to play the french horn because she’d be with the “band dorks.”
LOL.
That was my horn. I agree 100% with her. She’ll never get laid.
However, my wife played oboe and sax. There’s someone for everyone.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
haha, the 'music' tag picks up the freddie mercury video at the 'related fanshots' column
I endorse this thread!

My internet connection has been all sorts of wacky today...
I didn’t see your music thread when I posted the other one.
Are you out in the Bay Area?
I’m with Chiburb re: Diana Krall, but I’ll check out Lovano (as well as Toussaint, Iver, and Stevens).
You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

Saw him at Fitzgeralds a few years back and out here last February at Tractor Tavern.
I’ve gotten kinda bored with his solo acoustic stuff….but put a band behind him or give him a steel guitar and I’m sold.

yeah, i almost walked out on a son volt show at park west 10 years ago
he has no stage presence. but it’s a part of the package, so deal with it. that said, can you name a wilco song that more than 2 memorable lines? wilco is all about pop and melodies, and that’s fine, i like wilco, they can rock. but jay farrar is the songwriter of the two, he can tell stories while jeff glamorizes prescription drug addictions. and don’t forget it was jeff who was hitting on jay’s girlfriend (soon to be wife)…the two don’t compare
