My guess is our one good pitcher,

since our one good hitter plays the position that all good hitters play.

Cmon, Heinz. Even you can enjoy a win like this.

Besides, at our ages there’s no guarantee we live to see all 90 some losses this year.
Enjoy!

The difference is BA!

Seriously, it’s pretty sad that the most I’m interested in this team is Dye, who I picked up off the waiver wire in my 10 team league.

Good win, now go do that like 8 times more out of 10. And get healthy as well.

For the last week or so, I’ve been missing the start of White Sox games. I check the score and see they are already down and decide it’s best if I don’t flip on the game. I was pleased to see they had an early lead today (and to actually hold on to it).

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

by The Wizard on May 19, 2009 11:44 PM CDT reply actions

As the veterans set the tone, manager Ozzie Guillen has spoke about the uncertainty of the youngsters trying to work out of slumps at the major league level for the first time. With Brent Lillibridge optioned, the scrunity now falls on third baseman Josh Fields.

Fields is 1-for-23, and he didn’t secure his future too well Tuesday. Guillen already has pointed out the high number of strikeouts among his hitters, and Fields leads the Sox with 43 whiffs.

In the seventh, Fields committed a throwing error that led to a run in the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, in a sacrifice bunt attempt, he lined a ball back to the pitcher and heard boos.

Fortunately for Fields and the Sox, Thome came through with his clutch hit. But the microscope could zoom closer on Fields, as Jayson Nix took several grounders at third before pre-game batting practice.

i was at the game and it was music to my ears to hear the boo birds come down on this bum.

He can’t hit a fastball. He can’t bunt. He can’t throw. He can’t catch. He needs to go. Then I will work on Getz since we already got Lillibridge out of here.

Floyd in trouble
If Gavin Floyd continues to struggle, Jose Contreras might be coming up from Class AAA Charlotte sooner than expected.

Floyd is 2-4 with a 7.71 ERA in 8 starts this year, and he has not looked at all like the pitcher who won 17 games last season.

“Gavin has good stuff,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “If you don’t throw strikes in the big leagues, you’re not going to be what you want. A lot of people say, ‘Throw the breaking ball; throw the changeup.’ But you can’t throw the changeup when you’re behind the count on every hitter. You got to attack the strike zone, use your fastball and have confidence.”

It’s one thing when a vet like MacDougal, who’s banked millions, sucks and the fans get on him. Fields is getting a huge opportunity to have a career and set himself up for life, and he’s failing miserably.

Coach says he needs more toughness. I gotta step up.

Right

because I hear players that have a .282 OBP in AA do well in the majors, or guys that have never played 3rd or those that haven’t had an AB above High A. If you don’t like what you see with Fields, your only options are what you see on the 25 man . . . which means Betemit or Nix.

You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

Until the rest of the team gets it’s act together, I’d rather keep going with Fields. Let him fail, he’s lost all trade value that he may have had, and as of now we aren’t really in the playoff hunt anyways, he can’t do worse at this point, might as well give him as many opportunities to prove he’s completely useless as we can.

If the rest of the team turns it around, and it looks like we are going to make a playoff run then put him on the shelf and use Betimet and Nix. Or by that time a veteran might be available. None of the guys in the minors are ready, the guys we have on the 25 aren’t great, and not many teams are willing to give up their veteran’s for nothing yet.

by Grinder in Training on May 20, 2009 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

i'd wager that fields has this homestand to turn things around

and then we’ll see lots of betemit and/or nix. fields is doing an excellent job of playing himself out of the major leagues.

White Sox third baseman Josh Fields: “I don’t know what happened to the guy who hit 23 home runs as a rookie two years ago. He looks like he’s searching for the time he’s up at the plate. He doesn’t seem to have an ounce of confidence and he just swings at everything.”

After benching Alexei Ramirez for his struggles, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen didn’t hide his disappointment with Josh Fields.

“He’s next,” Guillen said of a possible reduction in playing time for Fields, who is in the lineup despite batting 1 for his last 23 and has 43 strikeouts this season.

Guillen is fed up with Fields’ high strikeout rate in addition to his low batting average. Guillen added that Jayson Nix and Chris Getz each have low batting averages but provide more quality at-bats.

Guillen added that left fielder Carlos Quentin probably won’t start the rest of the Twins series.

You are going to see some sort of platoon

between Fields/Nix/Betemit long before you see that. Phillips has only played a handful of games at 3rd over the last few years. If Fields struggles continue, I would like to see the Betemit/Fields platoon first. Leaving Nix to play the super sub role for a while . . . seems the most logical solution to me.

Fields
The overall futility of Josh Fields this week is staggering. He struck out eight times in 18 at bats, walked once, and hit .167/.167/.167. So he struck out way too often, hit for no power, and wasn’t good at getting on base by way of the walk.

my fav u of i adventure

a two parter.
The first part, we were wandering around state wrestling weekend wasted being so obnoxious someone shot my friend in the bare ass with a bee bee gun after he mooned them. We motherfucked them like crazy, people in another apartment heard us screaming up in their general direction and sent down three guys for a fight. We punished them, my guy recieved a smashed up nose and the two shiners that usually come along with it.
a few weeks later, this girl i was seeing wants to go back to u of i, so we head down, and end up crashing at the same apartment building, with the guys we fought! They didnt recognize me at first but after a few cold ones I came clean and apologized for the guys nose. Expecting an ass kicking or at least an eviction, I was happily surprised to find out by gones were by gones. He was disappointed to see my actual size which was smaller than he told his roommate since he had a good 30 lbs on me. Anyway, they were real cool dudes, they had a beer can mountain in the corner where you would just chuck your empties when you were done with them, it was massive. It turned out they werent even the ones who shot my friend with the bee bee, so they brought me over to the guys apartment for some reckoning, but he either wasnt home all weekend or successfully hid like a little bitch. No revenge there, but a pretty excellent weekend.

good times.

Tip #5

Walk up to the hottest girl in the bar and ask the following “will you be walking to your car later tonight?”

She will either say yes or no – it doesn’t matter.

Then go back to your bar stool and slowly drink your beer while staring at her for the rest of the night. (remember Tip #3 – don’t forget your pee cup…because it is important to stare all night – do not take your eyes off of her).

OT - Does anybody know why the White Sox played 163 games in 1998, despite finishing 9 games back of Cleveland?

I saw that they had a tie with the Blue Jays, but then there wasn’t an extra game with the Jays tacked on at the end of the season. This strikes me as odd.

I look forward to your recap, so stay sober

I saw an interesting show in PBS a while back in which a brain surgeon (or something of the sort) argued that while drinking a glass of alcohol a day might be good for your heart, it turns your brain into swiss cheese. I believe the optimal amount of alcohol for your brain was either one drink per week or one drink per month.

Seeing that show took a lot of the fun out of getting wasted. Cheers.

I did find a comment that referred to this study:

Association of Alcohol Consumption With Brain Volume in the Framingham Study
Carol Ann Paul, MS; Rhoda Au, PhD; Lisa Fredman, PhD; Joseph M. Massaro, PhD; Sudha Seshadri, MD; Charles DeCarli, MD; Philip A. Wolf, MD
Arch Neurol. 2008;65(10):1363-1367.

and other comments regarding the “on the brain” series made the creator of the show, Dr. Merzenich, out to be a shiester with his focus on “brain plasticity”. I don’t know much about the subject, but it was certainly interesting to me when they equated long term chemical exposure to long term alcoholism. Who knew huffing paint could be so bad for you?

here's a block text of the comment on that article
Paul and colleagues1 reported the results of a very interesting cross-sectional population-based study involving 1839 respondents aged 33 to 88 years without stroke or dementia from the Framingham Offspring Cohort. In this sample, there were no protective effects of alcohol in reducing the normal age-related differences in brain volume. Instead, higher levels of alcohol consumption were consistently associated with smaller brain volume after adjusting for covariates (age, sex, education, body mass index, and Framingham Stroke Risk Profile score). This association was modified by the participants’ sex, with women showing larger total cerebral brain volume than men at every level of alcohol consumption. Paul and colleagues also found no significant correlation between alcohol consumption and white matter lesion volume.

The body of evidence examined in very recent systematic reviews2-3 and a meta-analysis4 of all research published within the last 10 years suggests that low to moderate alcohol use may be associated with a reduced risk of unspecified incident dementia and Alzheimer disease, while for vascular dementia, cognitive decline, and predementia syndromes the current evidence is only suggestive of a protective effect. In the Italian Longitudinal Study on Aging, we evaluated 2963 individuals from a population-based sample and found that alcohol consumption was associated with the rate of progression of mild cognitive impairment to dementia; in fact, up to 1 drink/d of alcohol or wine may decrease the rate of progression to dementia in patients with mild cognitive impairment.5

Paul and colleagues acknowledged some limitations in their study, including the lack of an evaluation of regional brain areas and of a prospective analysis. However, genetic susceptibility seems to modify the effect of alcohol on risk of dementia and predementia syndromes, with some studies suggesting that the apolipoprotein E (APOE) {varepsilon}4 carrier status could be a possible effect modifier for these associations but with varied results.2-3 Nonetheless, the protective effects of light to moderate alcohol consumption against dementia and cognitive decline are more likely in the absence of an APOE {varepsilon}4 allele.2-3 One possible explanation could be that people with the {varepsilon}4 allele have less effective neural repair mechanisms; thus, they would be more susceptible to the deleterious effects of alcohol.2-3 On the other hand, regionally reduced gray matter density is detectable in cognitively intact adults (aged 19-80 years) with a single copy of the APOE {varepsilon}4 allele.6 Furthermore, longitudinal studies have confirmed relationships between changes in hippocampal volume and APOE genotype in nondemented older adults.7 Finally, women with alcoholism and the APOE {varepsilon}4 genotype were found to have significantly smaller hippocampal volumes than those not carrying an {varepsilon}4 allele, whereas no differences in hippocampal volume were seen in men with alcoholism.8 In the Framingham Offspring Cohort, in unadjusted analyses participants who had low alcohol consumption had slightly larger total cerebral brain volume compared with the other groups. However, when adjusted for covariates, there was a significant negative linear association between the amount of alcohol consumed and total cerebral brain volume.1 Given the relevant role of adjustment in reverting the direction of the relationship, we suggest that the APOE genotype could influence, as a confounder, the findings of this population-based study and could be important in explaining the lack of a protective effect of moderate alcohol consumption on brain volume in adults without stroke or dementia.

Always bet on black!

by onlysoxfaninboston on May 20, 2009 5:54 PM CDT up reply actions

i would have to read the article before critiquing myself

although this analysis is nested in the framingham study population, it’s still a cross-sectional analysis which can’t evaluate temporality…furthermore it appears that genetic suceptibility may play large role in explaining the variation in the association between alcohol consumption and brain volume…

i may as well down a bottle of two buck chuck tonight
