I suppose if I showed up to work, and they said they were bumping me down a level so I could be replaced with a guy who was older and couldn’t do the job as well as me, I might not take it well either.

Ozzie on Jose
“I don’t want to give up on him,” Guillen said. “It’s not my style, but I’d like to know what’s going through my mind. I’m going crazy about it. It’s driving his pitching coach (Don Cooper) crazy. The stuff is there. I’ve seen people get people out with less stuff, and that’s a shame. Right now I don’t have any answers about the enxt start. Right now I will pencil him in for the next start. We’ll see if we change our mind the next couple days.”

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

Please no... as in don't start him, or about keeping him in there

If anyone expected more from him – flip over the baseball card from the last 2 seasons.

hardly ideal with all the delays and stuff

he strikes me as the kind of bloke who needs his routine to go without interruption. It’s too early to give up, he’s shown enough to persevere with for another couple of starts.

I wouldn't mind seeing Richard get a shot

flip him with Contreras in the pen. Worked in 07. I didn’t think of Torres, though. He could be a good 5th starter.

gregor talks jose replacements
You are going to hear names like Pedro Martinez, Paul Byrd and maybe Freddy Garcia as potential replacements, but GM Kenny Williams would probably stay in-house if Contreras gets demoted to the ‘pen.

That means you’ll be hearing names like Clayton Richard and Lance Broadway, who are currently in the Sox’ bullpen. Shrug and another shrug.

Aaron Poreda is an obvious candidate to move into the rotation, and he’s pitched pretty well (1-3, 2.01 ERA) in 4 starts at Class AA Birmingham this season. The 11 walks in 22 1/3 innings are a concern.

Let’s throw an unknown name into the likely race to replace Jose _ Carlos Torres. In 4 starts at Class AAA Charlotte, Torres is 2-1 with a 1.17 ERA. The 26-year-old righty has allowed just 3 runs on 15 hits over 23 innings. He also has 23 strikeouts and 9 walks.

Fair enough.

I focus — perhaps too much so — on his OPS+ of 86 last year. Not the worst but certainly hovering in AAAA territory. I suppose his career numbers are more replacement-level.

Go Sox!

by luzinski on May 3, 2009 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

betemit is well above replacement for his career.

White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry

by larry on May 3, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

This got me thinking some....

My first reaction was that I didn’t think Betamit’s bat was good enough to bat fifth. While that reaction was more a testament to who else is in the line-up, it got me thinking about OPS by batting order position. This data may be readily available somewhere but I’ve only seen OPS+ by field position, not batting order.

If I did my calcs right — thanks BR play index — the AL mean OPS for the fifth position was 0.772. While I’m certainly over-simplifying the discussion, my general take-away was that Betemit’s career OPS of 0.763 is actually not out-of-line for batting fifth. (This surprised me.)

His 2008 OPS of 0.718 isn’t great relative to the fifth spot; however, OPS+ obviously would make this more of an apples-to-apples comparison.

First place in AL OPS for the fifth position in 2008? Chicago by far (0.907). Detroit was second at 0.848. Thome (67 games, OPS=0.960), Dye (34, 0.968), and Konerko (32, 0.900) led the way. Perhaps I’m spoiled by that production and thus had the reaction I did to seeing Betemit batting fifth.

Go Sox!

Excused absence:

About 15 minutes after the game Friday night, I shorted out an outlet in my wall. Blew a circuit breaker, which I had to replace since it didn’t trip properly and allowed a bit of a fire in the wall itself. (Fire is an exaggeration— Let’s say excessive scorching) All of which is now fixed.

But I didn’t discover until Saturday Afternoon that the persistent short had fried my cable modem. So I’ve been without internet since Friday night. (I blame my untrusting secured wireless neighbors)

Anyway, I’m logging on from the library now…. But given the track record of cable companies, I can only guess as to when my access should return, anywhere from a day to a month seems possible.

Q! doesn't need any stinkin' protection
The protective gear sits on the top shelf of Carlos Quentin’s locker.

And with a little prodding, Quentin might finally elect to sport some protection on his left arm to guard against injuries.

“I’ve thought about it,” Quentin said before Saturday night’s game at Texas. “It’s all about the comfort level. I think they talked to me about it.”

It might be something that if things progress where it affects my play, then I’ll have to go to it [gear]," Quentin said. “But for now, I feel like I’m fine without it, and it’s fine that it’s there [in my locker] in case I need it.”

Ozzie on Jose - take 2
The White Sox manager briefly paused before providing an example representing the struggles of the winless Contreras that perfectly captured Guillen’s entertaining but direct nature. Guillen pointed out how trying to get Contreras on the right side of his mound woes is like pursuing a woman for a date.

Just when you think she’s ready to go out with you, she dumps you for another guy.

“That’s exactly how I feel,” said Guillen with a bit of an exasperated smile. "We almost got Jose back, and all of a sudden, she has another boyfriend. She dumps you. Same way. I have to wait for next week.

“It’s on and off. I’m not tired about it, but I’m worried about it. I know Jose; the stuff is there. It’s about the way he’s going to take the game. We know he’s there. His velocity is good, he’s healthy, and we wait for him to click.”
