Peavy Trade To White Sox May Be Near [Update: Deal Now Dead]
According to Padres personnel, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black late Wednesday night to discuss a trade overture from the Sox.
Wow.
Also worth noting on the White Sox message board
White Sox message board - "Jake Peavy is on his way to the Sox for Richards, Poreda and 2 players to be named later. Teams have agreed and waiting for him to wave his no trade."

if it's only poreda and not including either beckham and flowers
i may be in favor of this… a tht article estimates his net worth will only be negative in the option year of the contract…

Assuming his elbow doesn't explode somewhere along the way
Peavy’s contract doesn’t seem like one the White Sox would accept for a pitcher
that is true
but they don’t have to commit to the option year…with herm, coop, and guillen, i’m less concerned of him as an injury risk

Which implies that the Sox would have to get $$ back as well
And so would have to give up a lot of talent in return
by hitlesswonder on May 21, 2009 8:10 AM CDT up reply actions
Not sure about that
Peavy’s contract (more or less) fits, seeing that the Sox are going to lose at least $25 million off of the payroll this year in Thome and Contreras and another $17 million after 2010 when Konerko and AJ are out. There’s also Dye’s $10 million that will be off either at the end of this year or next year.
If Poreda is the only big-name prospect they’re giving up and if they’re confident in the core of position prospects they’ve collected at Birmingham, it makes sense to go for the next couple years, as they should be getting some cheap production on the hitting side.
Good point...
But for that to play out they need to keep Allen and Flowers out of this deal I would think.
by hitlesswonder on May 21, 2009 8:52 AM CDT up reply actions
Tribune's rumor is that it is for "four players" but does not name them
White Sox: looks like we rolled snake eyes.
If those four players include guys like Donny Lucy and Juan Silverio, I’m in. As long as Flowers, Beckham, Allen aren’t a part of the deal I wouldn’t get too upset. Poreda may never develop beyond a closer anyways. Sure didn’t see this coming.
by Grinder in Training on May 21, 2009 8:02 AM CDT up reply actions
Of course, there's the rub...
Would San Diego accept Poreda as the centerpiece of this deal given that it is uncertain he’ll be more than a late-inning reliever? Unless they are just that desperate to dump salary…
White Sox: looks like we rolled snake eyes.
I guess that would depend on how confident they are he can learn how to throw his secondary pitches well, something there is no real way of knowing unless the trade gets made.
by Grinder in Training on May 21, 2009 8:06 AM CDT up reply actions
The commenters at mlbtraderumors speculate that Beckham is a PTBNL
And that the fourth player is Brandon Allen. I hoping that’s as ridiculous as I think it is.
If the 2 PTBNLs are anything but scrubs I would consider this a bad trade. Actually, it’s probably a bad trade no matter what. The Sox won’t be a good team in Oct. 2009 no matter what. Trading prospects for an aging, expensive but better than average pitcher is not a good move.

That haul is just silly and I feel pretty confident is not true
And saying Peavy wouldn’t make them a good team is also kind of silly.
Why exactly is it silly?
Unless he happens to win a silver slugger at 3B on the days he isn’t pitching, and can make Q healthy, it doesn’t seem to really solve our biggest problems.
by Grinder in Training on May 21, 2009 8:47 AM CDT up reply actions
Adding Peavy
and saying the Sox will not be a good team no matter what is silly if you are talking about winning the central. I am not referring to a WS (though one could argue on the short term luck and an improved staff.) I think if they trade for Peavy they probably will address the 3b situation. I expect the offense to get better. The D will still suck but again its the central.
Winning the central does not make you a good team.

But it makes for a summer of watchable baseball!
Which I will take gladly.

Sure Grinder
Toronto and New York were good teams last year that finished 3rd and 4th and sat at home.
Your first goal is to win the division, plain and simple. You do that and chances are you are a decent team. Flawed but good.
Plenty of bad teams win their divisions. I’d still like the deal, and I’d still like watching the Sox this year, it wouldn’t make us a good team though. It’d make us better than bad teams. Which.. is a lot better than we can say now.

The key is to get into October and have a pitching staff healthy and take your chances
Besides, this is a trade that the Cubs couldn’t pull off!

Don't speak so soon
If this was just a way of baiting other teams into acting on Peavy, the Cubs deal may rear its head again.
THANK YOU NATE SILVER, TECHNOLOGY IS THE TOPS
if you win the division
then you are just one dumb hot streak away from something big.
Good teams don’t neccesarily win in playoffs (all the time) either.
by RollingWave on May 21, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions
Trading for Peavy AND addressing 3B would likely make the Sox good enough to win the division
IMO Peavy alone doesn’t do that…
by hitlesswonder on May 21, 2009 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't have a huge problem with this statement
It depends on how much offense comes back. That said I think the team would address the 3b situation. If anything adding Peavy puts more pressure on Ozzie to improve the defense.
I agree that haul is silly
But I don’t think Peavy alone gets them to the playoffs. I don’t expect him to dominate in the AL and Cell. And the offense has been worse than the pitching so far.
Anyway, I was just asserting that Peavy isn’t worth giving up the farm for. If the trade is Poreda, Richard and random B-/C+ stuff I think that would be fine. We’ll just have to see. I hope that Allen and Flowers stay put….

Wins & losses? He plays for a garbage team.
He averages over 1K / IP. His ERA’s up a bit, but his BBs are low and his WHIP is still great.

Poreda, Richard..
I wouldn’t mind. I’ll be miffed if Allen or Flowers are involved. I’ll throw a tantrum if Beckham is included. I hope Viciedo isn’t included either. Peavy never had decent run support in San Diego (he certainly wouldn’t with the roster we have this year), but I’m curious how he’d adjust to the AL. I wouldn’t really mind if Alexei or Getz were included. Perhaps Beckham gets called up sooner thanks to this trade, if it happens.
Alexei
Do you think they would even consider taking Alexei with DePo in charge?
He is a free swinger who is making twice the league minimum and has a negative defensive value. If that is what it takes to Peavy, I am totally on board if Alexei is involved, though.
Not really
Just hoping. Alexei got a lot of hype over the past year. I’m not sure he’ll ever mature as a batter.

The (rumored) package
According to a commenter at MLB Trade Rumors – so take it with a gigantic grain of salt:
White Sox:
Jake Peavy, RHP
Padres:
Aaron Poreda, LHP
Clayton Rihcard, LHP
Chris Getz, 2B
Brent Lillibridge, SS
No Way
That would be highway robbery. PTBNL are rumored to be involved which are likely 2008 draftees. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Beckham is in this package.
Also, according to the Score this is a done deal and it’s up to Peavy to make a decision by sometime this afternoon.
That'd be brutal if it's Beckham.
If it was Beckham and Poreda that would just be god awful. Jordan Danks makes sense for Petco as a lead off hitter. I could be OK with him going.
by Grinder in Training on May 21, 2009 9:09 AM CDT up reply actions
I have a hard time believing Beckham is included
I would weep if that were the case. Man tears.
White Sox: looks like we rolled snake eyes.
If nothing else that fits with other things said recently.
Buster Olney suggested middle infielders are a part of the deal – Getz, Lillibridge
Pads GM was on with the score when they came to town talking about how they were looking for more speed to play to Petco – Lillibridge, Getz
In this economy, the White Sox may be one of the few teams with money to spend, and the Padres might not be able to get a better deal.

Stupid question
I don’t really watch the NL, so not too informed on Peavy. If the Sox are just trading Poreda, then it does make sense to get an upgrade in the rotation. But, is he a #1 starter? I’d appreciate a quick scouting report.
That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.
by NBA Observer on Apr 8, 2009 12:23 PM CDT
He's a #1 Starter in the NL
How he fares in the AL is another story. I’d say he’d be our ace, but I think his ERA (which usually hovers around 2.5 the last few years), would jump half a point or so. Just a guess. His biggest concern is health.
by NerdVernacular on May 21, 2009 9:17 AM CDT up reply actions
His ERA is a whole point higher outside of Petco
I’d think it goes up at least that much at USCellular, a half point is real optimistic.

by NerdVernacular on May 21, 2009 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions
The way that Buehrle is pitching...
Peavy just has to be a second “Ace”. Not trying to spark debate if Buehrle is really an “Ace” but he has been pitching like one to start the year.
This trade very well could be a la Milwaukee last year with CC. Sheets was never a winner, but adding CC took off a lot of pressure on him to preform, and he did so accordingly before he got hurt (again).
It’s opposite. Peavy has never been a big winner, but with a pitcher already who is 6-1 most likely pitching before him in the rotation, perhaps he can get hot for us and run a streak like CC (who was 11-2 as a Brewer).
And maybe getting Peavy will help a young pitcher like Gavin get back on track.
by slydernelson on May 21, 2009 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions
Does it matter?
He’s a 1-2 when healthy. He has been worse outside Petco but to the tune of a whole 3.82.
The key for him is health. Healthy Peavy is worthy 4-6 WAR. That is significant.
3B's
If Peavy does get traded, while some disagree, I think we have to add a third baseman, otherwise it seems like a waste.
Are any of these realisitic options? Mark DeRosa, Garrett Atkins, Melvin Mora, Adrian Beltre? Am I missing someone ?
by Grinder in Training on May 21, 2009 9:21 AM CDT reply actions
MLB Trade Rumors has switched its headline to: "White Sox, Padres Agree to Peavy Trade"
and are going off the reports from Gonzalez (linked by Tdogg) and one by Heyman.
Contract Question
For those who know more about this stuff than I do.
Is it possible assuming he doesn’t want to play here unless we guarantee the 22 million, to renegotiate the contract over the 4 years, so he gets the same amount in total, but more up front? So spread out that large bump in 2012 over 2009, 2010, 2011, instead of having it go way up in 2012? I only ask b/c I think with Thome, Dye, Contreras leaving next year 2010 will be our best year salary wise before guys like Q need to get a raise so we would be better off if we can pay him more that year.

I am fine with Getz going out in the deal
Nix is probably going to give about the same production as Getz the rest of the way at 2B, and going forward it looks like Alexei can play SS for the next 5 years. That means Gordon at 2B. I’m fine with that infield + Peavy.
Losing Poreda and Richard is a blow, but I have to give KW the benefit of the doubt on trading pitching prospects, he has a good track record.

190 innings/year
is pretty poor for a “#1.”
Where does #1 come into play here
has nothing to do with what you state above Plus, a fairly piss poor way to evaluate. I’ll look at value over innings pitched to determine a “#1”. The argument you should have made was that last year was probably his worst year since 2003, so depending on what you are giving up . . . are you getting the guy from 2004-2007 or the 2008 version or something worse.

Slap in the face to SD's Owner?
Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, said Thursday morning he has the highest respect for White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf and General Manager Kenny Williams, who helped bring Chicago a World Series title in 2005.
"The owner lets his very adept baseball guy run the show," Axelrod said. "I have a great deal of respect for how they operate. They allow their baseball people do what they are supposed to do.
"We have a great deal of respect for the organization, and the city of Chicago is a great place to play."

“If I had to make a bet on it, I would guess that Jake would say he’s not ready to take that step today,‘’ Axelrod said. "But he wouldn’t necessarily preclude it at any time in the future.
“We aren’t hiding anything from anybody. Jake has a strong preference to stay in the National League. He has a comfort zone there, he’s been successful, and he’s won a Cy Young Award. I don’t know that on May 21, that preference has eroded very much. From our point of view we may say, ’Let’s give (the Padres) more time and see if a National League team might step up over the next six weeks.’

Well Kenny is at least on the prowl
could a danny haren be pried from AZ?
From WC on BP (First I've seen of anyone mentioning the fact that Beckham apparently can't be part of the deal unless as a PTBNL):
“The Padres and White Sox agreed to a trade centered on Jake Peavy moving from the Padres to the White Sox. Peavy has repeatedly stated that he wants to stay in the National League and a source close to Peavy re-iterated that in a call this morning. Peavy has a three year extension in place beginning in 2010, so there’s not much that the White Sox can do to give him more incentive. One of the main concerns, I was told, is that Peavy is unsure about playing for Ozzie Guillen. Peavy has until tomorrow to approve the deal. No "window" has been open or requested by either team.
The White Sox made an aggressive first offer of four players, including Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, and two other prospects. Gordon Beckham is thought to have been discussed, though it is unlikely the Sox would be willing to deal him, even for Peavy. He would have to be traded as a PTBNL, due to the Incaviglia rule. There’s been speculation that the Sox would deal Chris Getz, but again, the names included in the agreed deal have not been confirmed by any outlet at this time. "

They talked to the Padres radio guy who said it’s all very unlikely. Why?
1. Peavy likes living in CA (moved his family from Alabama)
2. He likes to hit
3. The Cell is a hitter’s park
4. The only AL team he ever hinted at being interested in is the Angels
After that interview, they went to DJ who added absolutely nothing to the conversation for 10 minutes. He had no info, no insight, no nothin’ – big surprise.
