Jake Peavy is Just Not That Into You, White Sox

via Cowley:

A source close to the Jake Peavy camp has said that the pitcher has notified the San Diego Padres that he will not accept the trade to the South Side, killing the deal that would have sent four players West and put Peavy in black and white.

Screw Jake

If he’s too afraid to pitch in the AL. Who’s up next. I hope Kenny had another target in mind. Haren maybe?

by NerdVernacular on May 21, 2009 6:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The Peavy (non)deal was as much about circumstance as it was about getting Peavy

Kenny saw the chance to get a pretty good pitcher at a rather deflated price. It certainly seemed like Poreda was going to be the only significant player from the Sox end moved. That’s just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Looks like KW stuck to his guns — no guaranteed fourth year (speculation on my part, although I thought I read that somewhere in the past few hours), none of Beckham, Allen or Flowers in the deal (again speculation although I’m more sure about this one). If you really want Haren, he’s going to cost two or three of our ‘big four’ prospects, and that seems like robbing peter to pay paul — you get better this year with Haren, but what about the offense, with Dye, Thome and Konerko out the door in the next couple years and nobody from the farm to replace them?

The Peavy deal was a chance to take a run at the 2009 crown without — IMO — sacrificing a whole lot of the future. Sure, Poreda could develop those secondary pitches and come back to bite you, but you’d still have Peavy, and you’d still have Beckham, Allen and Flowers at cost-controlled prices ready to replace the old bastards.

Oh well… I’ll admit to getting caught up in the situation (as I usually do) and thinking the Sox had a good chance to sway Peavy’s mind. At the very least it’s nice knowing the Sox payroll situation is much better than I thought it was. Hopefully they’ll use some of that cash money they would’ve had to pay Peavy to select a few ‘signability’ guys with those Cabrera picks next month.

Awesome.

I was worried all day at work since i had gotten a few texts and wasnt really informed on the happenings of the trade. Peavy is overated and Poreda will be a monster soon.

It's like he's a cyborg sent from the future to draw 22 walks a season or something.

And thats exactly what hes been doing for the last couple months.

And putting up good numbers despite throwing pitches that he hasnt be very good at throwing before.

Jake Peavy

aka The Mangina

by echo on May 21, 2009 6:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Attention, shoppers
Jake Peavy’s pending deal to the White Sox came as no surprise to scouts around baseball. We heard from multiple scouts this week that White Sox scouts were spreading the word that GM Kenny Williams was open for business, meaning “they’ll talk about anyone,” said one scout. So even after this deal for Peavy, Williams might not be done.

Obviously, John Danks and Carlos Quentin aren’t going anywhere. And Mark Buehrle’s contract swells to $15 million a year if he’s traded, and guarantees his $15M option for 2012. But the buzz is that Williams will listen on Jermaine Dye, Jim Thome, Paul Konerko (who has to OK any deals), Octavio Dotel, A.J. Pierzynski, etc.

Williams is one of the most aggressive GMs in the business. So once he decides to move, look out. “Kenny’s always open for business,” said one GM. “He loves to make deals.”

If I were a padres fan, i'd be a little miffed at peavy

Now that teams know that he’s serious about this “only 3 or 4 teams I’d move to” business, he’s just shrunk the market down to those teams. Heck, if I were the Cubs or Brewers, I’d come back with an offer containing less than the original ones they floated a few months ago. The Padres have to dump him at some point given their budget.

The Sox will move on – it would have been nice, but it hardly would have fixed every issue on this team, and hey, maybe this Poreda kid will turn out pretty goo.

I stick him in the pen where he can’t get hurt. Tell him he’s useless to us, and to quit his bitching, other teams know his value. He can sit down there until someone wants him.

Peavy can go to WWE for all i care

BTW i really love how you all wrote the worst comments in my thread calling me andy rooney and writing about “When it comes to window blinds, vertical blinds are terrific, but so are horizontal blinds.” that was real classic stuff i hope it was just the liquor talking.

Since theres no need to talk about the Peavy trade id like to talk about throwing the entire team under the bus. (except Quentin,Dye,Floyd,Danks, and Ozzie)

20-1 pretty much says its all. the 1 more than the 20

I am really going to miss coming here and seeing posts about communist dictators and horizontal blinds. the only one with an intelligent post was TheCheat whom i respect.

Did you think Jake was going to come here? when he can pitch for the fairweather fans up north? Its just a shame Peavy could not open his eyes and see the white sox are a real team with real fans even if these fans do talk about horizontal blinds in fan posts.

and FYI i dont think poreda will ever win 6 games in the MLB and i think clayton is decent. when i saw Peavy to white sox i asked my self “so this is a god” but now that reality has come down its obvious that god does not exist peace out

Go white sox

at least there was that one year you know 2005 when cubs fans cried and white sox fans got to celebrate?….yea that happend that one time

Winning?

The Padres have absolutely no chance of winning in the next 4-5 years. Their payroll is trimmed to $40 million and they have a barren farm system. The Sox have been competitive every year this decade with the exception of 07, and are willing to spend money in order to win. If he didn’t want to come to the Sox because he didn’t like the city, or because he didn’t like Ozzie, I would understand. Not wanting to come because he’s afraid his ERA will rise, even though he stands a chance to win something here, means he’s much more concerned with looking at a park-deflated ERA and hunting come Oct. 1st than trying to win a chamionship. And it’s not like he’s making the major league minimum, his contract has set him up for life. And if he were to win while he was here, and help us go deep into the playoffs, I’m certain there would be a hefty contract available to him should that be his major concern.

by Off the bus running on May 21, 2009 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

We're not the only game in town.

I don’t blame him – he didn’t demand a trade, he didn’t solicit this, he exercised his contractual right. WTF is the issue with Peavy? Put yourself in his place for longer than 5 seconds and you’ll see there was no way this was happening.

Plus, let’s just say we MIGHT be competitive for a division title this year (sure, let’s do that after today’s game). What of next year? Way too many uncertainties about future performance. I’d hold out for someone more desperate to win at all costs (and willing to guarantee the option year or pay bucketloads to waive the NTC).

Grow up – this is life and business. You’ll get to exercise your Constitutional rights some day, too.

We’re a pack of a-holes.

I'm far more optimistic about next year

than I am about this year.

If he said he didn’t want to leave San Diego and was going to block any and all trades in order to keep his family there, I’d respect that. But he didn’t. He has stated his preference to play in the NL- which shows he’s more concerned with his statistics than he is about winning. And he chose not to come to the White Sox, even though he is willing to come to Chicago to play for the Cubs. So yes, I believe that’s a slap in the face of the White Sox. Feel free to disagree- you have the Constitutional right to do so. But when someone decides they’d rather not come to play for your favorite team, don’t act like it’s sacrilige to be both disappointed and find fault with it.

by Off the bus running on May 21, 2009 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't suggest it was sacrilige to critique it.

I said to not personalize it. If you want to get your undies in a bundle over a non-trade that was not going to happen, be my guest and soldier on. I’d be more concerned about the ass-kicking we took today, but that’s me.

It's one loss

Considering at one point today it was 50-50, I wouldn’t say it wasn’t going to happen. It didn’t happen, and tomorrow we move on and play another game and forget about it. But for one night, it’s a welcome distraction from a 19 run loss. And the Pirates are a good cure for an ailing team.

Their payroll is 2.5x greater. They have an established ownership who isn’t openly trying to trade the face of their franchise while they rebuild. Would you trade the our farm system for theirs? I wouldn’t call it a fool’s errand- I’d say our future is a lot brighter than theirs.

“It was communicated to me earlier this evening that Jake Peavy is simply not yet ready to make a commitment to join the Chicago White Sox.

“I understand where Jake is coming from given the unusually early timing of this type of event. It’s understandable that he was caught a bit off guard, as most people in his position would be. He has a wife and three young boys to consider, and Jake has earned the right to thoroughly think through this move.

“He and his agent, Barry Axelrod, have been transparent in their thoughts, respectful and complimentary of what we have accomplished with the White Sox, and understand our desire to win another World Series title. I walk away with a greater respect and admiration for both as a result.

Carlos Quentin confirms plantar fasciitis injury, plans to return to White Sox's lineup Friday
By Mark Gonzales

White Sox slugger Carlos Quentin confirmed Thursday morning he was told he is suffering from plantar fasciitis in his left foot but said he is available to play.

“That’s what they told me,” Quentin said of the ailment that transferred from his heel to the mid-foot area.

The injury is caused by excessive wear, alhtough Quentin said he was fitted with new orthodics insoles in addition to wearing a protective boot the past few days.

“It’s annoying, and then it gets painful,” Quentin described the pain that has since subsided.

Quentin hasn’t played since last Friday in Toronto, when the artificial turf caused further pain.

“That’s why we jumped on it as soon as we could,” Quentin said of the treatment. “We were pretty aggressive.”

Depends on the severity.

Most (dozens, literally) of folks of all ages (and levels of running acumen) say it is NOT a lingering (years) issue, but a 6-12 month mystery and exercise in frustration. Stops ’em cold.

I’ve never heard anyone describe their experience like yours, UG. So that’ news to me. Have you been booted? Anyone I know who has was in a world of hurt for a few months. I never took the boot and I had to lay off running for 2 months, and the pain persisted for 6.

Well, yeah.

I mean…steak dinner…boom.

Yeah they are close to that caliber

I went over to have a beer before there softball game (alot of them are unemployed, I on the other hand had to take a 14 year old to a group home today).

The rest of them were saying the commitment was too big and that they don’t have the prospects right now.

He still had the last say so.

What is wrong with the media. What until the deal is done. Now he will be traded to the team he want’s. How many deal’s have been that close, ill say at least 80%. At that price do we really really care . Hat’s off to the American league for exposing over the hill pitcher’s.

For those of you following Will Carroll's twitter feed
Hearing Peavy didn’t just turn down White Sox, but made it clear that he won’t accept a trade anywhere this season.

Why not? His deal gives him time.

OT: Just heard the line of the night from Young Ted Nugent:

“People like to roast marshmallows over the flames that come out of my ass.”

THAT, my friends, is Rock and Roll.

MLBTR
Todd Koppernoll at Brewersfan.net has an interview with former major leaguer Brooks Kieschnick, the first player to hit a homerun as a pitcher, a pinch hitter, and as a DH. This is a fascinating account of the rise and fall of a ballplayer. Key quote: “I knew my career was in trouble the minute the Cubs drafted me.”

buehrle only has an f-350, and for fun he helps people that are stuck in the snow.

jon leiber, however, has an f-650, which is really big.

brian anderson would've caught that...

Good to know.

Maybe Chicago baseball is just going to suck this year

However, at this point I would still be surprised if the Subs can’t win the division.

ashamed to say this

cubs are doing it right this year. Take it easy in the beginning of the season, just hang around, and then light the torches up to finish off … scary just to think about it!!!!

the whole purprose of a no trade clause

is to prevent your current team from trading you to one that loses 20-1.

between not getting Peavy and yesterday’s loss i am not very happy
