FRIDAY 5/22/09 - photos and recap
The first biannual(?) SSS meet up was a blast.
the cip was wasted(he wore it well), LT(stands for Lithuanian, not Ladanian Tomlinson like I always suspected) stole the show(despite wu being an OPOS about his ethnicity), hsa is a babe(believe it), el diablo(his real name is fisters) invented a new hi five that will overtake the nation, colin is nice(but long haired and a ginger no less, so he clearly cant be trusted) u-god drank his first 4 beers ever(i think), TAEG lived up to the moniker with his stunning good looks, happy human kept us up to date on the Hawks at the post game tail gate, and the cheat not only showed up but he wore a tuxedo. talk about class. the monkey from pale hose 9 was even there, as were trooper, furbs, hazymania, the whole gang. t-dogg brought some street cred to the crew(hes black) and inherited a promotion to OPOS too, since no young person wears a Greg Norman style hat like that.
815 showed up and infected us all with his disease, but the bomb in larry's brief case never went off so that part was good. The only bad thing was the fact that the game was over just as we were all figuring out who each other was. Wrap it all up with some post game fireworks AND cans of Schlitz and Hamms(they still make both, do you believe that?) and it was a perfect day.

on the ground: El Diablo seated: HSA, e-gus, trooper, 815sox standing: happyhuman, furby, u-god, t-dogg, the cheat, winningugly, rangerjae, the cip, back row: the actual el guapo, larry(hard to see but hes back there), hazymania, colin, and LT sox fan at the post-game tailgate.
via images.photo1.walgreens.com
internet nerds before the game:ranger jae, trooper, u-god, hsa, furbs, larry(back), hazymania, LT sox fan(front), e-gus(back), t-dogg, colin, happy human(front), el diablo, wu, TAEG
both photos taken by the lovely mrs. e-gus.
We have to do that again, it was a lot of fun.

Alexei Ramirez, who scored both runs the night before in a White Sox, victory was moved into the second spot in the order for Saturday night’s game against Pittsburgh right hander Ross Ohlendorf.
Ramirez singled and scored the first run Friday, then homered in the eighth inning, only his second of the season. He will bat behind Scott Podsednik. Also, Jim Thome was back in the lineup after resting against left-hander Zach Duke the night before and Carlos Quentin was in left field for the first time in a week.
The lineup was made out by White Sox bench coach Joey Cora. Manager Ozzie Guillen left after Friday’s game for Venezuela to help attend to his ailing father in law. Guillen is expected back some time Sunday, although probably not for the start of the afternoon game.
The lineup:
Scott Podsednik, CF
Alexei Ramirez, SS
Jermaine Dye, RF
Jim Thome, DH
Paul Konerko, 1B
Carlos Quentin, LF
A. J. Pierzynski, C
JoshFields, 3B
Chris Getz, 2B

when we were walking, I was thinking, I hope these guys don’t think I gonna drive, because I am way not into shape to sit behind the wheel. Threw the cooler into the trunk, sat behind the wheel, saw that it is not happening, got out, and just walked to friends place.
Next time if we do this, I can find you guys a place to crash. The only problem is that way instead resting we will find more booz to drink and party on until it gets light outside :)

haha!
Quentin was back in left field against the Pirates on Saturday, but he is still feeling the effects of plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
“Carlos is going to have to deal with it all year,” said Joey Cora, who is filling as Sox manager while Ozzie Guillen visits with his ailing father-in-law in Venezuela. “That’s the way it is. But he said it doesn’t bother him and he’s feeling better. Hopefully we get him going, swinging the bat a little bit more.”
Before exiting Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh after the sixth inning, Quentin was 0-for-3. That dropped his batting average to .222.
Playing with a sore left foot hasn’t helped Quentin’s offense, but he’s trying to make the best of it.
“The only worry is just dealing with kind of discomfort,” Quentin said. "It’s something that I’ve been told I’ll have to deal with, so I’m going to have to deal with it. That’s basically it.

Is Richard's fastball legit?
Ever since he’s been with the Sox he’s been sitting at 91-92 with the ability to notch it up to 94. I know he only broke out last season but for whatever reason — my ignorance or otherwise — I thought he worked moreso in the high-80s.
In any case I hope he’s earned himself the right to keep that rotation spot if he keeps throwing well. Maybe I’m overrating him based on the past few starts but I think he’s got the stuff to be a decent enough back-of-the-rotation starter (perhaps even a league average type, if he can become a bit more consistent with his secondary stuff) — there are some stretches where he shows some real good command with that fastball.
by CWSKeith on May 23, 2009 10:45 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He's a lefty that has a decent fastball and decent control
that goes a long way. If he can sustain this improved velocity (which I doubt) maybe he can turn into a solid 3rd of 4th starter. That said, I think his upside is as a 4th or 5th guy. Floor seems as a solid middle reliever.
I like Richard, he’s young, he’s cheap, and he stays healthy. Hopefully he can continue to improve.
by madvillian on May 23, 2009 10:48 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I liked Richard last year
Its funny, going into to last night I told a buddy that I thought it was kind of weird that people were glossing over him and what he may be worth (particularly in the NL). I do think his fastball is legit (or hgh induced :-)). It certainly wasn’t scouted as slightly plus but his velocity is definitely up and the fast ball has averaged 91.4 which is higher than Danks. He does project to have decent control, something which got him to the majors but most of the criticism for him last year was not enough tools in the arsenal.
We’ll see. His FIP is last year was 4.07 but again folks were worried about the high LD%, etc…..This year that has all changed so far. His ground balls are up and his Ld% is down, way down. His confidence seems to be growing. Now its still only 33 IP but Richard has really done nothing but get better since getting here and a 3 or 4 potential might not be a pipe dream. Hell maybe the Sox teach him the cutter and then we really might really have something.
Side note. The ironic part is with the surrounding rumors about Peavy many folks asked, “who the hell is Clayton Richard?” Teams probably paid attention to that last start. I have a feeling more will begin to ask for him, especially if KW is looking for established pitching. That might be really sad because as pointed out he’s cheap and effective. Now others are realizing it.

Also
the only real negative has actually been his walks are up from last year (thus a slightly higher FIP). That really doesn’t worry me. He’s not getting many borderline calls right now and in that Cleveland start the strike zone was ridiculously jumping around.

Oh I am still fine with making that deal.
Especially if the team upgraded 3b or 2b. Its just with a bit more progress Richard and his super cheapness might provide a real opportunity in the next year and half if he truly can be effective.

i was a bigger fan of the idea of richard in 2009 and later than in 2008.
he was rushed a bit last year. i think we’re seeing how effective he can be: a #4 or so starter. a good backend of the rotation, at any rate.

Dewayne Wise will begin a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Monday in Columbus, as the center fielder continues to recover from a separated right shoulder suffered while making a spectacular diving catch in a victory over Detroit on April 13. Wise does not expect to play on Monday and said that he will serve as designated hitter before getting into an outfield role by Wednesday.
Wise expects to be gone from the White Sox during their weeklong road trip to Anaheim and Kansas City. The Knights also visit Toledo at the end of this upcoming week.

Also have a black one. I don’t wear them much anymore except for some golf rounds and extremely sunny days that I’ll be out all day (picnic). Its actually really good at keeping me cool and protecting my head all the way around. In years past I have actually had people offer to buy it from me (I usually just look at them as nut jobs…)
I felt a little awkward upon arriving but that didn’t last long. It was nice to meet fellow Sox fans that understand Pods was not the real reason the team won the WS in 05! I do wish there was more time to have a few more conversations with folks (cheat dissed me.) I actually thought cip WAS cheat for about 2 innings.
I look forward to the next one and hopefully we will have even more internet pychos….
