Waiting for Gordo: White Sox Minor League Update
As those of you who talked with me at the various blog events know, I was planning to write a post about how Gordon Beckham was likely to be called up next month to replace one of Josh Fields or Chris Getz as a starter. I even had this nifty title all ready. But, as Wiz pointed out yesterday, what was an interesting angle on Tuesday isn't so much on Saturday when one finally has some time to write about it.
At any rate, since I need to put at least 75 words up here, I'll dump the notes here. The primary thought was that Beckham's bat is mostly ready and, while his defense at SS is still suspect, that can be papered over if he's playing at second or third (and he's made appearances this week at both of those positions). Fields in particular is playing himself out of the major leagues. After about the first week of June, one doesn't need to worry about Beckham getting enough service time to be a Super Two in arbitration. If the season is to be salvaged, Beckham may be able to provide more than the current options. And if it can't be salvaged, Beckham gets plenty of no pressure PAs.

do you think shelby is progressing at all? fi has him for a pretty low BABIP combined with improved BB and K rates. it looks like his batted ball rates have him hitting balls at similar rates, so is he a victim of poor luck?
by Craig Grebeck on May 24, 2009 4:44 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
.240, last i checked.
i’d call that bad luck for sure. he has improved his plate discipline. the offense looks okay so far – the problem now is where is he going to play? with danks there the CF experiment is now only occasional (like today) and his defensive progress is about as important as his offensive. LF isn’t ideal for him.

Glad I found a thread on the Minors...
From a book on Coolbaugh’s death, here’s a snip followed by a link to an interview with the author. Other than a snide comment on internet posters it’s all pretty fascinating:
Minor league baseball also sells itself as a place where major league dreams are born, the place to see stars before they get too big and leave, and as a marketing play it’s the only one to make. You always want to flatter your audience, and it’s never bad to reinforce the collective hope that, like those ballplayers scrambling around the field, we’re all just punching our tickets here; we all can move up and out of this small town someday; we all have roots but are capable of leaving them behind. The truth wouldn’t sell nearly as well: too scary, too depressing. The fact is, from the players’ perspective, there’s nothing casual or forgettable about any game in the minors. Every pitch and every play is, to at least one man there, loaded with significance. The pressure to perform is crushingly heavy, the financial cushion nonexistent, the line between haves and have-nots vividly pronounced. Maybe two or three of the players you saw have a chance of playing in the major leagues. The rest, no matter how they perform, are learning — maybe even tonight — that this year or next year or the year after, they’ll be going back to their own hometowns and humdrum jobs for good.
Still, for those who survive them — and sometimes even more importantly, for those who don’t — the minors is where everything about the game is taught: not just the time and place to hit the cutoff man or translate the signal for a hit-and-run, but the secret language, the hidden codes, the way to walk, trot, run, and speak the way DiMaggio, Mays, Aaron, and Feller learned to walk, trot, run, and speak. Baseball has always had its rebels, and for the likes of Bill Veeck and Jim Bouton and Mark Fidrych, baseball’s culture has always allowed itself a modicum of tolerance. But on the whole it’s a conservative world, with hidebound mores and a near mystical regard for what is generally called "the game" — a term that stands less for rules and scoring than for a way of looking at life. Players learn plenty in the minors, but the biggest lesson is always the one they didn’t, as onetime superstars, ever expect: how to lose, how to fail, how to get kicked in the teeth and pretend to come up smiling; how, in the great baseball paradox, to learn to give yourself to "the game" even as you feel it operating contrary to all you’ve been taught, even as it rewards those who don’t "respect the game" or give themselves up for the team. Because baseball does that, too, especially in the minors: It teaches a man how to endure being crushed and then stand up and declare himself in love with that crusher for life. [47-50]

Gordan Beckham, SS, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Monday’s stats: 3-for-5, 2B, HR (4), 5 RBI
The 2008 first-round pick hasn’t received much attention for his daily performances, as he’s been consistently good, but not great. Now we finally have a dominant run, as in his last six games, Beckham has gone 12-for-26 with three doubles and two home runs, raising his OPS nearly 100 points in the process with a season line of .307/.368/.514.

Playing in a tough league (Southern) and in tough ballpark (Birmingham) hasn’t slowed Gordon Beckham down a bit. Despite missing time with a strained abdominal muscle, he’s maintained an elite contact rate (90 percent) and isolated power mark (.217). His batting eye appears to be poor, but it breaks down as one walk and six strikeouts. He’s much closer to .50 on the season

Jordan Danks, OF, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Tuesday’s stats: 3-for-4, HR (2), 2 R, RBI, BB, CS
After getting through the Carolina League in about a month, Danks is now showing little trouble getting the job done at the upper levels, going 14-for-26 with five walks in his last seven games to raise his Southern League averages to .391/.473/.531. With that kind of production, people stop wonder about why his six-foot-four, 210 pound frame doesn’t generate more power, and start wondering about how quickly he can get to the big leagues.

this is how rivalries start in the minors.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Carolina League)
Salute to Punctuation Night, May 28
The Pelicans are the middle school English teachers of the Carolina League, perpetually hung up on the nuances of grammar. Therefore, the club’s deeply ingrained sense of propriety was offended when the Winston-Salem franchise changed its name to the “Dash.” This is because the punctuation separating Winston and Salem is, in actuality, a hyphen. On Thursday, the Pelicans play against the so-called Dash, and throughout the game they will take great pains to be grammatically correct at all times. (They are even considering calling their opponents the Winston Hyphen Salem Dash). In order to put an exclamation mark on the proceedings, staff members will sport t-shirts featuring different types of punctuation. And who knows? Maybe they’ll play “Comma Chameleon” over the PA.

Gordon Beckham’s on the fast track.
The White Sox promoted their 2008 first-round pick from Double-A Birmingham to Triple-A Charlotte, breaking up a juggernaut roster of prospects for the Barons.
Beckham, 22, has cemented his status as one of the game’s elite prospects this season. Though he spent some time on the disabled list with an abdominal injury, Beckham has hit .303/.363/.503 in 37 games. Playing in Birmingham suppressed Beckham’s home run output (he has four on the season), but he’s also mashed 17 doubles, tops in the Southern League.
Beckham has been one of the reasons behind Birmingham’s annihilation of the SL. The Barons have the SL’s best record at 31-15, with a roster that includes some of the top prospects in the organization: lefthander Aaron Poreda, catcher Tyler Flowers, first baseman Brandon Allen, center fielder Jordan Danks and third baseman Dayan Viciedo, among others, while 23-year-old second baseman C.J. Retherford is making noise as well with a .912 OPS.

08 draft review
Chicago White Sox
Top Pick: After creating an enormous amount of buzz during spring training while earning real consideration for a big-league job, shortstop Gordon Beckham has settled in nicely at Double-A Birmingham, with a .303/.363/.503 line in 37 games.
Movin’ On Up: Slipping to the seventh round due to signability issues, outfielder Jordan Danks is looking like he’s worth that $525,000 bonus, with a .346/.431/.527 line split between High- and Double-A. With gap power, a good approach, above-average speed, and plus defensive skills, scouts are having a hard time finding a weakness in his game.
Disappointing: Despite coming out of a major college program (Wichita State), sixth-round pick (and son of the general manager) Kenneth Williams looked completely overmatched at Single-A Kannapolis, batting .222 with 23 strikeouts in 63 at-bats before hitting the disabled list earlier this month.

TRLongwe (Durham NC): Can you tell me if White Sox prospect CJ Retherford is considered a legitimate prospect in baseball circles? He’s hitting .312/.344/.567 in AA as a 2B and he’s only 23.

Kevin Goldstein: Cashner. Not even close.
..
scott (chicago): Anything to read into Beckham getting promoted to AAA? Could the Josh Fields experiment soon be over? Please please please tell me it’s so…
Kevin Goldstein: I’d read more into the fact that he’s playing third base there. That’s really telling for your question.
scott (chicago): Well, that’s partly why I mentioned Fields. But why waste your time moving him to AAA? It’s not like it’s tougher to defend at AAA than AA, right?
Kevin Goldstein: Because they already have Viciedo at third base at Double-A, and now he can stay there while Beckham plays it at Triple-A.

Finally
Been waiting on some comments/opinions from baseball people on CJ.
What is he lacking in regards to being a decent middle infielder? Am I right to assume it has something to do with his mobility in regards to his foot? What other position would he be better suited for?
Also, as someone who mainly visits for the minor league discussion, I prefer the blunt and almost cruel Larryful insight.

may be more than just his foot.
he’s not that big to start with, which will affect range to some degree. he may be more suited to a corner, defensively. of course, then you have to ask whether the bat plays there. i wonder if some of the issues may not just be from a lack of playing time at a position. he’s been moved around quite a bit, both in college and in the minors. it’s good, i think, that he’s been played pretty consistently at 2B this year.

What is more interesting that the White Sox’ top pick in the 2008 draft moving up to Triple-A is the position he played in his debut, as the shortstop has suddenly slid over to the hot corner. realistic best case?
without too much thought, something like .285/.345/.450. i think the power will be there, i’d question, though, if his BA will be that good or whether he’ll draw walks. the major league equivalents for his AA numbers were about 260/.315/.410. take the mid-point of those two triple slashes and you’re probably at what he’ll realistically do.

this analysis works for flowers, too, who is taller.
Matt Wieters (0 DXL)
Today’s the day and I figured that I should at least address Wieters. Wieters may be the rebirth of the Orioles or PECOTA’s Waterloo, but we do know that he’s going to be the ultimate test of the tall catcher problem. Along with Joe Mauer, whose leg problems can in some ways be attributed to his height, Wieters is one of very few catchers over 6’3". Keith Law was the first to mention this that I can remember, though I’m sure it had been addressed elsewhere. His ideas on it (he was against at the time, though I’m not sure if he still is) got me to ask some of my father’s students to test it. They did some calculations and physical tests and, yes, there is more stress on the knees and hips during all phases of the crouch. Testing the muscles’ response was more difficult, but the additional stresses didn’t seem to speak well there. I’ve long been for moving Mauer from behind the plate, and if Wieters is as good, I’ll be an advocate of moving him as well. Not completely, but both play in the AL and that DH slot should be used for more than just hiding a glove. Now, let’s all hope that this is the last time that I have to put Wieters’ name in UTK.
