Quentin Aggravates Injured Foot - DL Trip Likely
ANAHEIM, Calif. - White Sox left fielder Carlos Quentin left Monday night's game in the top of the first inning after hurting his foot while running out an RBI double.
Quentin, who is coping with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, limped halfway to first base and barely reached second. He was assisted off the field by trainer Herm Schneider and assistant trainer Brian Ball.
Brian Anderson pinch-ran for Quentin, whose hit put the Sox ahead 3-0 over the Los Angeles Angels.
It's just plantar fasciitis, though - should be no problem. Clearly just needs to stretch his calf. Definitely can play with it.

I thought that for plantar fasciitis you wore the boot when you slept...
I guess I misread the instructions….

more Q!uestioning
Carlos Quentin said he’s prepared himself to play with pain in his left foot for the rest of the season, but he had to come out of Monday night’s game against the Angels in Anaheim, Calif., in the first inning. …

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

cst_sox: Quentin looked like a horse with a broken leg on his double. Being helped off the field now. He’s done. Might be DL time.

cst_sox: Word on Quentin is discomfort in the left foot and he will be evaluated again tomorrow.

That injury is most common in distance runners.
You CAN play with it. It comes and goes. Herm has his work cut out for him. This kind of injury doesn’t necessarily get better by just doing nothing. It’s a syndrome, not an acute type of thing. You manage it and play as much as possible.
by dantesox on May 26, 2009 12:35 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
and they need to figure out how to manage it.
you know, without him leaving games and stuff. which takes time.

Carlos has got to be educated about it.
HE has to know what to expect and manage himself.

I assume they're looking at anything that helps.....
orthotics and stuff can be really helpful. He needs to play through this.

no.
what the sox needs to do is get it figured out so he’s 1) not being removed in the sixth inning of games because it’s too hard for him to play defense and 2) not pulling up lame in the first inning of games 5 strides out of the batter’s box.

a player should manage himself.
yup. that’s why the sox have a medical and training staff. that bobby sure looks smart – i bet he could clean up my labrum real nice.

There's a real small chance of this injury worsening, at least I think.
This isn’t a torn labrum. That’s why Herm and Kenny said what they said—- it isn’t as serious as it looks. But IT IS very painful. He has to know how to run and get ready so he can play with this. As well, he has to be prepared for any sudden, fast movement to not be very pleasant.

who says anything about getting worse?
he can’t play now.

I'm not sure, lar.
Maybe. But it may be he just has to get used to what it feels like and how to manage it in games….knowing how to move and having confidence that he’s not hurting himself any worse…Tonight, I’d DH him against Saunders, taking advantage where possible of little breaks from playing the outfield.

IF
you really think this injury is going to get better quick and/or you really believe losing him for 15 days won’t kill us given the alternatives we have to replace him, then maybe. I don’t think rest and a rehab stint will do him any better than smartly managing it while playing up here.

Gee (let's start the self-engulfing),
who suggested a week ago he DH? (Uh, me, and I was told that’s why we have Thomer.) Who DH’ed Friday in front of a throng of SSS idiots? Q. How did he look? “Like he was taking a dump on the plate.” How else, in nicer terms? “Like he’d spread out his stance.” Perhaps he did it because of his injury?
Dante, everyone’s pain is their own. Q has been smacked by enough pitched balls that his pain threshold is probably higher than yours or mine. This injury is new enough, and perhaps unpredictable enough, that he might not try and “tough it out” or “play through it”. If it is at all as many, many of my peers have described (and if he has high arches or flat feet – as I do – he may be more predisposed to this injury than you) he will need to rest it during this acute phase. Do you think he’s not attempted to play through it already, or tough it out? Fer Chrissakes, if he screams out while rounding first base in the first inning I think he needs some attention, you know?
I’m not catastrophizing, but I am not marginalizing, either. I’d bet he needs a DL stint, especially if they’ve already gone to the boot.

That boot is just a device to help him mainly at night or when he's off it.
I am not endorsing needless machismo. I don’t think it affects him AT ALL while hitting. This kind of injury just doesn’t get better quick or really improve with pure rest. I wanna say most sports med guys would ENDORSE various aggressive treatments AND movement. This isn’t like a broken bone or even a pulled hammy or oblique strain.
by dantesox on May 26, 2009 2:25 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Most sports med guys?
The guys I speak with are with Florida Hospital, and they have been dealing with runners and their injuries for 30+ years. “This kind of injury just doesn’t get better quick or really improve with pure rest.” No kidding. “Pure” rest? Stretching/ice/massage/etc. have not been effective, I’d bet (hence, the boot). Search “plantar fasciitis” and see that fast starts and stops aggravate the injury. We’d hope Q would have numerous occasions to be explosive out of the batter’s box. Sports medicine guys would tell you to not start and stop quickly and limit the stress to the affected area.
I disagree that it doesn’t affect him while hitting. See my post above that references Saturday’s posts about his hitting stance. If you disagree, fine. This will all come to light with the passage of time. And I’ll bet it’s a season-long issue unless he takes some time off.

Well, there aren't going to be a lot of infield hits.
That’s what I mean by knowing how to deal with the injury. The sudden starts and stops are tough. He has to temper those. His hitting has nothing to do with the plantar. That’s just him adjusting physically and mentally to a tough period, which happens to coincide with the plantar. Listen, you’re probably gonna get your wish and they’ll DL him…..I just think it’s gonna really hurt us and likely not help things along for him.

Are we really asking him to do anything different from what Thome has been doing?
Hey, I don’t want another guy who can’t run well either….but in light of the alternatives and the nature and prognosis of Quentin’s injury, I don’t like the DL idea.
