How Soon is Now? White Sox Minor League Update
I'm going to be posting my mid-seasonish top prospects list in a comprehensive post in the next few weeks. However, first I'd like to get the thoughts of the more dedicated minor league followers at a preliminary list. Keep in mind, I spent about three minutes considering this.
1. Beckham
2. Flowers
3. Poreda
4. Allen
5. Danks
6. Viciedo
7. Carter
8. Link
9. Hudson
10. Shelby
11. C. Torres
Others in no order: Retherford, N. Jones, Omogrosso, Morel, Ely, Infante, Gilmore, Upchurch, D. Rodriguez, Marrero, Leesman.

Flowers definitely deserves to be second.
He mashed in April due to a .421 babip but after it came back down to earth his OBP rate skyrocketed. 26.5% BB to 17.6% K in may over 102 PA.
It's like he's a cyborg sent from the future to draw 22 walks a season or something.

Also, there is this thread and the one on the front page this morning.

i know you're kidding, but this is the model that people thought was a good / the best choice for how SSS is set-up.
i’m not messing around when i say that i’ve spent considerable time and thought, not to mention asking people (usually people who i know are big minor league guys but posted elsewhere or infrequenty) what they wanted in white sox milb coverage. and i of course have my own throughts on how this coverage is going to evolve. as is evident in the now taken suggestion that this fanpost be weekly, i’m open to suggestions on how to improve the coverage. we unfortunately have some constraints in how SSS is set-up which sort of hinders the daily coverage of this topic. obviously, those constraints are an advantage in the bread and butter of this site so i wouldn’t change it – it just provides a bit of a challenge in creativity.

but he generally induces weak-ish contact.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Isnt there going to
also be a split concern for him as he moves up? If I remember him from college correctly, I thought he sort of slinged the ball from the right side. I would think he might end up having issues with lefties as he moves up the ladder and I know he has been far less successful against them in his short pro career thus far.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
that's a fair assessment.
he strikes me as a guy who might benefit from adding a cutter. as goldstein said, at this point he’s just an interesting arm. and when you see an organization stretching a college reliever into a starter, usually means they agree because otherwise they wouldn’t be allocating innings to him.

imagine if hawk were announcing
The Birmingham Barons lost two arguments with the umps …
The bigger argument came in the sixth on a one-hop line drive to second baseman C.J. Retherford, who converted the play into a 4-6-3 double play. However, an inadvertent ruling of an infield fly negated the force out at second. Barons manager Ever Maggallanes argued the call for a dozen minutes, to no avail.
According to Rule 2.00, however, the infield fly was not in effect because no baserunner occupied second base.

We have good talent again, but you can tell the depth drops off suddenly
when you see people like D-Rod up there
Colon, who after pitching 5 scoreless innings, had to leave the game with an upset stomach.
the drop is pretty precipitous after 6.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
You really think the dropoff
to Carter and Hudson is that huge? Maybe the dropoff from 5 I could see, but I guess I dont see Viciedo being the huge step up from those guys. I know his age play an important role there, but I just have a real issue that a guy who is likely going to be a defensive liability anywhere he plays, if at all, also doesnt walk. I just think the odds of his power bat making up for both his inability to control the strike zone and the subpar fielding is low. Not that it doesn’t make him an intriguing prospect, but I guess I dont see the huge dropoff from him to the others.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
yours is the sort of input i was looking for.
i’m more into grouping players instead of strict numerical rankings. one place where i have a group end is after viciedo. at this point, i’m far more sure that viciedo will actually be a contributing major leaguer when compared to the guys behind him. as for my wording, by precipitous i mean the real drop-off begins there and accelerates quickly. can be visualized as: \ . i like carter’s upside but he has some rather large question marks. link is almost ready to be tested but i’m not sure he’s legit yet and he’s probably a set-up man at best. and i have a lot of questions about hudson at the higher levels. ymmv about viciedo’s questions, which also can be described as numerous. i just like the fact that he’s now hitting the ball in AA as a 20 year and i believe the power will come next. i never thought he’d walk much and I’ll let the defense figure itself out. if we’re going to compare upside, the guy who is two years younger and is two levels higher wins hands down.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I cannot dispute much of that
as I agree . . . Viciedo is clearly ahead of everyone else below him because of age and level. But, in the end, I really dont feel the step down is that large. I think the big step starts after Hudson/Carter with Link or Morel or whomever you would like to fill the last few spots because at that point, you could probably choose between 6-8 guys and make a decent case. However, admittedly, I am a bigger skeptic of Viciedo than most and I am probably a bigger proponent of Carter/Hudson than most . . . particularly Hudson and though I rated Carter higher below based on ‘stuff’ and ceiling . . . I really think Hudson is going to pan out and be a solid 3/4 starter for a while in the bigs.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

Gordon Beckham, 3B/SS, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte)
Just when you think you have it all figured out and Beckham moves up to Triple-A and starts playing third base every day, he goes back to shortstop on Sunday. The organization’s plans for the 2008 first-round pick remain open to speculation, but at least Beckham continues to do his part by remaining an offensive force, going 7-for-15 with a pair of doubles in his first four International League games. It’s hard to figure just when he’s going to be in the big leagues, but with each passing day it seems the answer’s more on the side of sooner rather than later.

White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I think your top 10 list
is solid . . . even if you only took 3 minutes on it. I see the top 3 the same way and essentially had the same list with a few flipflops and Morel instead of Shelby, though I dont think there is really much of a difference there:
Beckham
Flowers
Poreda
Danks
Allen
Viciedo
Carter
Hudson
Morel
Link
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
isn't a lot of flowers' upside based on him being a catcher?
i know he has a ML bat, but wouldn’t that be very negated if/when he has to move to 1B?
the other thing I’m wondering is if that speaks something towards the confidence you have in poreda’s ability to develop adequate secondary pitches to become a quality starter

yes, yes, and, even though you didn't form it as a question, yes.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
Buddy Bell was on the Score
over the weekend and was very sure that Flowers was a ML catcher and was pleased with his progress as a receiver thus far. Spoke more to him having to work on calling a game, but it was generally very positive. As opposed to Viciedo at 3B, where he said improvements have been made, but he has ‘a long way to go there’.
That really cemented my thoughts that he is #2 . . . if that actually comes to fruition or he can somehow actually become adequate . . . then gasp, he might be #1 on this list over the savior.
Not sure if anyone else caught that on Sat afternoon, but it was good stuff.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
beckham will no longer be a prospect at the point, if ever, you'd feel comfortable enough to say flowers was going to be a catcher.

one reason for the beating
Watching one of the best hitting displays of the season were Buddy Bell, the Chicago White Sox’s director of player development, and Jeff Manto, the hitting coordinator for all of the White Sox’s minor-league teams. Both would have a hard time finding much wrong.
“Any time the coordinators are in town you want to play your best,” Gallagher said. “We get enough from Joe because he pushes us pretty hard, but it looks good when they are here and we hit like that.”
and if you think pro baseball is much different than little league:
Andy Dudones, the home-plate umpire, was struck in the right hand with a pitch from Eric Barrett of the Pelicans in the seventh inning and had to leave the game with a broken hand. Base umpire Will Little moved behind the plate to finish the game while Robert Marcial, a reserve infielder for the Pelicans, covered the bases as an umpire. When the Dash was in the field, outfielder Christian Marrero, who was out of the lineup last night, served as the base umpire.

You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
Actually, no.
I understand keeping Corky because if you need someone tomorrow then neither Lucy or Armstrong are capable. But, I must be missing something with Lucy. The two followed similar paths as far as age and league are concerned . . . Offensively, Age 23 in both High A and Double AA, Armstrong outperformed, Age 24 in AA and AAA and that was probably a wash or slightly in Armstrong’s favor. From the defensive side, I thought they were both slighly above average, but I am less sure on that regarding Lucy, maybe that is the piece I am missing. To top it off, Armstong is exactly a year younger. I look forward and if T-Flo is the catcher of the future, who makes more sense as his caddie? . . . I will take the LH hitting catcher to pair with Flowers all things being equal . . . but, I dont even see things being equal. Certainly open to the counterpoint.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
neither player has much, if any, of a major league future. and i would never, ever advocate either being anything more than a fleeting stopgap and certainly not someone to pair with flowers.
as for age, who cares. they’re both old already and doing absolutely nothing in AAA. at any rate, lucy is probably the better defender overall. if i’m looking at organizational depth, i’m not that concerned about AJ and i’m looking right at the injury-prone castro. if he gets hurts (assuming corky accepts), corky is the first choice. if corky shits the bed or gets hurt, i’d want lucy up (assuming death is not an option). if AJ goes down, platooning doesn’t matter because castro doesn’t have much of a split. so i’d simply want the best player around, if necessary. that’s lucy by a nose. what breaks the tie, outside of merit, is that lucy probably has more supporters in the organization. just ask rick hahn.

fair enough
it really isnt much of a decision either way, I guess I was just a tad surprised as I would just side with Cole, but they have more info than I do.

sleepers awake
Continuing from last week’s look at the 2008 draft beyond the first round, let’s take a look at nine players drafted after the third round off to good starts in 2009, excluding players who signed for well over slot money. Jordan Danks, for example, is a seventh-round pick playing well, but he also cost $525,000. That’s going to be a bargain for the White Sox if Danks turns into any type of serviceable big leaguer, but the point here is to focus on some of the more under-the-radar picks.
..
3. Dan Hudson, rhp, White Sox (5th round, 150th overall)
Hudson struck out 107 batters in 92 innings during his junior year at Old Dominion, but his 4.70 ERA was also his highest in three years with the Monarchs. His pro debut last year with Rookie-level Great Falls in the Pioneer League was promising, with Hudson flashing a lively fastball and an average slider to strike out 90 batters and walk 22 in 69 2/3 innings with a 3.36 ERA. Hudson, 22, didn’t need much time this year in low Class A, and his 1.23 ERA and 30-2 K-BB mark in 22 innings got him pushed quickly to high Class A Winston-Salem.
…
9. Dexter Carter, rhp, White Sox (13th round, 390th overall)
It looks like Carter should be joining Hudson, his former college roommate and pro teammate last year at Great Falls, at some point soon in high Class A. Carter’s junior year was awful, as he gave up a run per inning and walked nearly a batter per inning. But some mechanical adjustments last year to get him to stride more directly to home plate helped Carter improve his control. After dominating with Hudson in the Pioneer League last year, the 22-year-old Carter now has a 3.86 ERA in low Class A with 77 strikeouts and 14 walks in 58 1/3 innings.

What is the skill difference in low Class A and Class A,
and why are there 2 Class A’s? Thanks.
We’re a pack of a-holes.

more polished hitters. better plate discipline and so on. not a huge difference. usually the players have at least a year of full season ball under their belts.
as for why, first there’s more than two. i think it’s a mischaracterization to call the SAL ’ low Class A’. it’s class A. winston-salem is high (advanced) class A. the short season class As, like the new york penn league, are “low” Class A. but people throw the terms around however so it probably doesn’t matter. as for the reason why, i’ve got no idea how it started. probably wanted to stick with the A, AA, AAA progression but adding new levels. used to have class B, C, and D leagues so maybe that’s how those former leagues got shoe-horned in.

Would it make any sense to try to convert Lucy or Armstrong to a different position?
Or would that be too much of a total reboot this late in their careers?
I suppose the likely alternative is a change in employer for one of them.
It is very questionable either
will ever be able to hit enough to be a backup C in the show . . . and if you can’t hit as a catcher . . .

Silverio with another home run, is he still a prospect at all?
by Grinder in Training on Jun 5, 2009 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions
of course. nothing has changed about him, as far as i'm concerned.
he has the physical tools to play. maybe there was malfeasance regarding his bonus. big deal. it was $600K. the top prospects out of the DR get almost 10x that. maybe his age is fudged. but that risk was there when he signed and i don’t see how that has changed, either. the hype machine surrounding this guy was pretty ridiculous (phil rogers ranked him, what, #6 in the system?), i’m assuming because he is a SS and was the first guy the sox signed for any money out of the foreign market for awhile. and he shit the bed pretty badly at bristol. but he never should have been listed as anything more than an interesting prospect – even in the then piss poor white sox system i wouldn’t have had him in even a top 20 list. i mean, even giving the benefit of the doubt to everything, a raw 17 year old who hadn’t played in this country and was signed for “just” $600K? come on.
he’s interesting and i’ll cover him and the other two because they are also interesting. i’ll try to figure out if there are any pitchers (or other players) worth mentioning but i’m going to need quite a few games to even begin to figure that out. the DSL is very, very far away from the majors. the good prospects will play there and then go to rookie ball in the US the following season.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
