You'd think the fact that we're in the Central would be appealing to these pitchers.

The fact that they’d be leaving teams like the Dodgers and Cardinals (in division) to compete against AL Central teams would help me start to get over the park we play in.

This is ignoring the rest of the AL, of course.

by Black Sox Baseball on May 31, 2009 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's be candid.

Cell = bandbox = high ERA.
AL hiitters > NL hitters.

Can’t say I blame any good pitcher from a horseshit team with a LT contract toiling in obscurity (no pressure) from not embracing that move.

We’re a pack of a-holes.

by winningugly on May 31, 2009 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Or course.

But that makes it sound like these pitchers would rather sit and bake by themselves for the money and the off, off-chance that they make a run for the HoF as opposed to aspiring to win a ring.

Moving to the AL doesn’t make you a crappy pitcher, it makes you an AL pitcher with AL numbers. I’d hate to think these pitchers lacked the love-of-the-game mentality where playing in October is a distant third to making money (which they’d make elsewhere) and having pretty numbers.

“He always does that to me.”
“I’ve thrown him everything,” said Greinke. “He’s hit everything. You get two strikes and he fights off good pitches. I used to think he was just a bloop hit guy. He’s a little better than that.”

I didn't present myself properly. I was asking you a question:

You seem to be saying a pitcher would rather do nothing on a bad team for the money and good stats.

I’m saying I don’t understand this mentality because they’d be getting paid just as much on another team thanks to that contract being a…contract, plus if they moved to the AL they’d still (if they were a good pitcher) have good numbers – just when compared to other AL pitchers (almost like a weighted scale). Plus there’s the added bonus of moving from a bad team to a team with a chance (which the Sox are looking more and more like). You know what I’m saying?

If they’re waiting for their team to trade them in-division or at least to another NL team then all they’re getting is the benefit of good NL stats compared to other NL pitchers (and great stats when compared to oranges – a la AL pitchers)…and apparently batting?

by Black Sox Baseball on May 31, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

they tend to think about their next contract as well

and putting up better stats in a weaker league leads to more money in the next contract

I don't see the different between a guaranteed World Series and a guaranteed year without injury.

Both probably don’t exist.

However, if I were to leave the NL with good stats, do well in the AL, and then looked to get back into the NL, I’d definitely be looking at how C.C. and Johan did it successfully.

by Black Sox Baseball on May 31, 2009 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

both people you picked in your example

went AL to NL, not the other way around. it is easier to go AL to NL as a pitcher. give me some names of guys who recently went NL to AL and have done at least as well as they did in the senior circuit

That's because I was explaining that these pitchers don't have to leave the NL forever, making the examples completely relevant.

I can’t name any. However, if you’re implying that a pitcher automatically becomes worse when leaving the NL to go to the AL simply based on their numbers (which we’ve acknowledged to be inflated in an equal distribution), then I have to disagree.

Roy Oswalt in the NL shouldn’t be comparable to Roy Oswalt in the AL without considering the higher power numbers of batters in the latter.

No problem.

Using ERA as an example, I’m saying it wouldn’t be accurate to compare the ERA of Oswalt in the NL to the ERA of Oswalt in the AL without considerations.

It would be entirely more accurate to compare the difference in ERA of Oswalt in the NL to the avg ERA of all NL starters.

Then (breaking it up to make it less confusing) take that different and compare it to the different in ERA of Oswalt in the AL to the avg ERA of all AL starters.

I hope that makes a bit more sense.

by Black Sox Baseball on May 31, 2009 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions

it does and thank you very much for breaking it down like that

civility is nice in arguments. doesn’t ERA+ take this into consideration?

by U-God on May 31, 2009 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed. I look forward to future arguments.

To be fair, I’m not nearly as familiar with statistics as the rest of you guys on here. However, from what wikipedia says about ERA+ that looks like a perfectly good measure for comparing.

So then, with this in consideration, you said “It is easier to go AL to NL as a pitcher.” Does that mean the average trend of a pitcher’s ERA+ is worse the year after they move from the NL to the AL?

By the way, I don’t know why I kept writing “different” instead of “difference.” Apologies for the typos.

And sure, you’d love to think it’s about a ring. 2 things:

1. Do you think the Sox have a change at a WS title?
2. How long have you been in the working world in thinking that money does not overcome all? (Most of the time.) If I were an elite pitcher I’d hold out for an elite team plus an elite contract. Neither Peavy or Oswalt have any ties, emotionally or otherwise, to the Sox.

A big deal pitcher could really help the chances of the current Sox team make October.

After that, the first thing you want is good pitching. With our bullpen the way it is, good starters seemingly seal the deal. Besides, I certainly like our chances more than their current teams.

by Black Sox Baseball on May 31, 2009 6:37 PM CDT up reply actions

this is what the sox need to do
Before Game 6, McLane approached Oswalt in the Astros’ clubhouse. “Roy, I’ll make a deal with you,” he said. “If you win the game tonight, I’ll buy you a bulldozer.” Oswalt lurched to his feet: “Deal!” Oswalt blew away Albert Pujols with a 95 mph fastball in the first, held St. Louis to three hits and a run over seven innings, and as he finished his work and walked toward the dugout, a thought echoed in his brain: That bulldozer’s mine.

Oswalt loves baseball, but there are parts of baseball he can’t stand. Like being away from Weir. Hours after the World Series ended, Oswalt drove home. “Ten years, I think,” he says. “Ten years would be enough. I love the game, but the only way I’d stay longer is if I had a boy, and if I wanted to stay around long enough for him to see me pitch.”

Yes.

But the general consensus seemed to be he was moved specifically to AAA to face better pitching, but more importantly to play 3rd base more often without moving Dayan. I think it’s interesting that he’s not at the position when Fields is suddenly doing better.

Unless he will still be playing primarily 3rd base and, as you said, he’s just moving around not and again. In which case, we’ll have to wait and see.

Guillen likes top of lineup
Even before Scott Podsednik tripled off the unhittable force that has been Royals ace Zack Greinke to start the game Sunday, manager Ozzie Guillen finally was feeling like he had settled on the right combination for the top of his lineup.

The Sox have used seven different leadoff hitters until Podsednik solidified that spot, and seven different No. 2 hitters with Alexei Ramirez now handling those duties.

His hope is that the Podsednik-‘‘Missile’’ combo is here to stay. …

is pretty easy to make IMO, Indian food take a bit of practice to get it down.

IMO, Indian restaurants are (on average) terrible

I guess you would hear that from any ethnicity, but the food they serve at most restaurants is incredibly bland, and loaded with cream/tomatoes, which no one does in their own dishes.

Indian food isn’t incredibly complicated, it just takes a lot of trial and error. It also depends from what region are you cooking. I think it’s easier to make the vegetarian dishes.

spake hsa:
SSH is commonly referenced around here. He is a former SSS’er, who was banished from the site during Game 3 of the Twinkiedome series, in which the Sox were swept and lost control of the division in 2008.

He was notorious for his negativity. Even his pro-Sox comments were somehow negative. So when the collective site was heads-in-hands weeping at the sight of the Twins sweep and the demise of the Sox’ season, SSH made the comment that sealed his fate.

His removal from the site was the dawn of a new era.

That doesn't even come close to 'doing SSH justice'...

if you’re really that interested do a post search. The depth of his obnoxious-ness was truly amazing.

Thank you folks for filling me in.

That series…. that may be my worst sports memory, ranking up there with Rex’s back to back interceptions in the Super Bowl.

Seems like a good practice in these forums to try not to say anything that would get you punched in the face if said in person. Can’t say as I disagree with that heat-of-the-moment decision.

it wasn't really heat of the moment

it was a long long long long long long history of being an ass. he’d been on SSS at least since ‘07 and much longer i’m pretty sure.

and I think he was there dating back to the old site.

I don't remember him being all that offensive,

I remember the “incident”, but getting banned on multiple sites happened pretty quickly… As far as SSH, I am not sure someone should get banned for being obnoxiously critical of the team and a closet cub fan who comes on here to stir the pot. Look at Kenwo for chrissake!!

No he's not decent in the field...you need to get down to ESPN get some learning from Keith Law

Or was it someone at BP?…I forget. But the consensus was he was a bad bat that was disaster at 2B and would be worse at SS. He’s a low ceiling Juan Samuel.

So, I await the Q&A in which it is revealed that, like last year, the current hot streak doesn’t count because he isn’t doing it in the right way.

And I’ll keep my fingers crossed he doesn’t actually flameout….

I was in KC over the weekend

and was at last night’s game. Lots of fun. I’m somewhat vocal. Only one ass hole. When Buehrle left up in the 8th, I stood up and gave him a big round of applause and Mr. A. Hole screamed (with lots of vitriol), “Sit down.” I just turned and smiled in his general direction. He must have known what the outcome was going to be.

Today is June 1.... this is a huge month for our mighty heros.

The farthest trip is to Cleveland at the very end of the month. We have “road trips” to Cincy, Milwaukee and the north side… we have a huge (as far as huge can get in the AL central in June) 5 game series with the tigers…. I expect big things

and it is truly remarkable how little we travel until the Seattle trip in August.

We are on a roll, I agree with another poster that it may be a bad thing that we have never seen these upcoming pitchers even if they are suckfest.

After 49 games,

this Sox team is essentially a .500 team but has played five more games on the road than at home. Not bad. Not great. At the start of the year I thought this team would play .500 ball for most of the season, and I thought that would be good enough to keep us close in the Central Division race. Assuming that Detroit doesn’t run away and hide, this should be an entertaining summer. Was there much more we could have asked from this squad?

by palehose67 on Jun 1, 2009 9:26 AM CDT reply actions

I think the key to the Sox' success this weekend is more than obvious.

Cheat wasn’t around.
June 2006: Cheat leaves and the Sox sweep the Cardinals.

Coincidence?

Yeah, surrre.

Moral of the Story: Always Bet on Black

You can put it on the Board, YES…

Well fellow SSS’ers, yours truly, truly fucked up this weekend. Im glad that the Good Guys cleaned house with the sweep, but in all honesty I was satisfied with a series win. So satisfied that when one of my peeps in Chicago who likes to rouse me for being Royalty for living down here and workin at the K, tried to bet me 5$ that our boys in black would win the series. Obviuosly I thought that was a dumb bet and didnt take it, but come Saturday with one win under their belt, he kept at it, so I upped the anty and placed a bet with the odds against me, but still what I thought would be a solid bet. I placed 100 that the Sock would win Sat and loose Sunday. Unfortunately I am now trying to find out what those pills are that Sack Greinke takes for his depression and anxiety to ease my pain :(

Hawk; "what would you do in that situation"
