White Sox Season Over: White Sox Minor League Update

Due to increased commenting and the White Sox season now being officially over, we're going weekly.

As far as no-hitters go, this one was hardly the type that ends with the pitcher jumping into his catcher's arms before getting swarmed by his teammates.

Aaron Poreda will take it, just the same.

The former first-round pick struck out eight and walked five over five hitless innings Monday as the Birmingham Barons blanked the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, 3-0, in front of 1,795 wet fans at Regions Park.

"It feels awesome," Poreda said. "I haven't thrown one since high school and it's quite a feeling. For me personally, it wouldn't be as nice as it would if I had pitched all nine innings, but on the scoreboard it says complete-game no-hitter. You just have to appreciate it because it doesn't happen very often."

Yay no-hitter!

I’ll take any positive news I can get these days.

You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

Whatever, it still goes in the record book

Aaron Poreda, LHP White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Monday’s stats: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 8 K
It was a messy five hitless innings for Poreda as beyond the five walks, he also hit a batter and was already up to 85 pitches, with just 46 of them going for strikes. Then the rain came, the rain didn’t stop, the game was called, and Poreda suddenly had himself a little piece of history. The 16 walks in 27.1 innings is more than a bit concerning, but at the same time, the Southern League is hitting just .165 against Poreda, and on a pure scouting level, you don’t need more than one hand to count the number of lefties who can match his size or velocity.

carlos doesn't have an out pitch. he has three average pitches.

which could be fine. but he’s somewhat inefficient and lacks stamina. coupled with the above, i think he’d be hard-pressed to last five innings at the major league level at this point.

Average stuff? Stamina?

Torres was slated to be a bullpen pitcher this year and probably conditioned himself for that role….do most pitchers with no “out pitch” generally have the most K’s on their team and a sub 1 ERA? This guy must be pretty lucky to put up numbers with such average stuff…….. If only he had an above average pitch, maybe he could lead the team in nearly every relevant pitching stat…oh wait he already does.

leading the knights is, like keith said, totally meaningless. the team sucks.

and here’s a guy averaging 20 K per 10 innings. let me know what you think a guy of his prospects.

and, no, he was not “slated to be a bullpen pitcher this year”. he was slated to start for the knights. is this guy your brother or something? guys who have three average pitches are fine. they’re better than most. and they tend to end up being backend starters.

.You may want to double check on where he was slated to pitch this year

Larry, Torres was slated to pitch in the bullpen for the AA team, when cassel got hurt they decided to plug Torres in to the rotation…..My guess is if Torres goes to the show it will be in the bullpen. (probably why torres throws exclusively out of the stretch)……not his brother, just saw him throw this year and was impressed……Having never seen your guy throw, I don’t know to much…. he seems to have the right frame to be succesful, but his last two appearences have been a little rough. I’m guessing he throws pretty hard, and is working on refining some complimentry stuff. Am I close?

by I.D. Sox on May 12, 2009 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

No-No? Technically, Yes
White Sox lefthander Aaron Poreda, the club’s first-round pick in ’07, shut out West Tenn for five innings Monday night, despite issuing five walks and hitting a batter. But because the game was called at that point due to rain, and because Poreda had allowed no baserunners via a hit, the Double-A Birmingham lefty is credited with a no-hitter, the Southern League’s first this season.

“He did a great job in the stretch,” Birmingham pitching coach J.R. Perdew told The Birmingham News. “That’s when he was at his best. Tonight, he got a lot of work there.”

Poreda, 22, improved to 2-3, 1.65 through five starts, and he’s given up just 15 hits in 27 1/3 innings. However, the 6-foot-6 lefty’s strikeout (9.2 per nine innings) and walk (5.3) rates are up considerably from last season, when they were a corresponding 6.6 and 2.2.

What can you tell us about this kid? Should he be on the radar? Info plz. Thx.

by DirtySox on May 6, 2009 11:27 AM CDT reply actions

yes, he should be on the radar.

lefty. 3rd round pick out of florida hs in 2006. today was the one year anniversary of his TJ surgery, which caused him to miss all of 2008. when the sox say recovery time is one year, i guess they don’t mess around. i listened to part of the game as i was working but didn’t pick up much info but, prior to his surgery, his fastball was in the upper 80s and he was a change/curve type, with the curve being a promising pitch. from this, you can pretty much tell that he’s a control guy who changes speeds.

i was surprised at how good his control was today because, of course, it’s not unusual for a guy coming off arm surgery to have trouble getting back to that.

5 IP, 1 hit, 1 BB, 1 WP, and 9 K. kept the ball on the ground nicely, as well.

yet more.
Matthew Eddy: A reader asked about White Sox LHP Justin Edwards, but I accidentally deleted the question. Sorry, still getting used to our new chat software. Edwards, 21, struck out nine in five innings, giving up one hit, during his ‘09 debut for Low-A Kannapolis on Wednesday. The White Sox took him in the 3rd round of the ’06 draft out of Olympia High in Orlando, but as the reader points out, there hasn’t been a lot of buzz about Edwards. The biggest reasons: He carried a 5.64 ERA into the season, he missed all of ’08 while recovering from an injury, and his stuff is good but not great. He ranked in the Appy League Top 20 in his debut (access it from “Rankings Archive” on our Main page) and in our ’07 Prospect Handbook. He pitches in the mid- to high-80s with a solid curveball and changeup.

Winston-Salem Dash (Chicago White Sox)
THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Dash went 1-3 on the week by splitting a pair of afternoon affairs with Frederick on April 28-29 and losing two at Wilmington before being rained out May 3-4. Winston-Salem is 11-12 on the season, two games behind first-place Salem in the Southern Division.

WHO’S HOT: RHP Charles Shirek went 3-0 in four April starts with a 3.18 ERA. Shirek allowed only 19 hits in 22 2/3 innings while striking out 16. Opponents batted .229 against him. 1B Christian Marrero batted .405 in April, but got off to a 1-for-7 start in May. 2B Dale Mollenhauer concluded the week hitting safely in six straight games, going 11-for-21 with five RBIs.

WHO’S NOT: The Dash pitching staff had an ERA of 8.44 during the first two games of May. RHP Levi Maxwell went 0-4 with a 6.00 ERA in four starts during April. Maxwell allowed 25 hits and walked 12 batters in 18 innings. He also was not fooling anyone, posting only four strikeouts while opponents batted at a .338 clip against him.

CONTACT THE KEY: OF Jordan Danks is making things happen when he makes contact. Danks concluded the week with a .329 batting average, a .414 on-base percentage and a .518 slugging percentage. However, Danks has 27 strikeouts in his first 23 games. When he puts the ball in play, his average is a robust .478. Scouts have noted that Danks needs to cut down on his swing when he’s behind in the count and improve his overall pitch recognition.

TOUGH TIMES: With a scheduled afternoon tilt April 28, the Dash and Frederick Keys attracted a reported crowd of 201, with a head count about one-fourth that total. Those that attended saw the Keys hit a trio of home runs, two of which would not have gone out of the former Ernie Shore Field in recent years. The Dash were supposed to be in a new ballpark, but that has been delayed at least until mid-June. In the meantime, Wake Forest University took over the facility and removed a row of signs on the outfield wall, reducing it to eight feet in height. The last time Winston-Salem played with that fence dimension in 1994, a Carolina League-record 202 home runs were hit. Making matters worse on April 28, Jim Gallagher’s 18-game hitting streak came to an end when he struck out with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

a good question i heard on 670 the score

KW’s three weaknesses?

Gambles (though also a pro)
Stubborn (can also be considered a pro)
Didn’t take control, especially in the farm system, for first couple of years. Poreda first draft pick really made by KW and not scouts.

describing failing to direct the draft as a weakness is missing the point some.

there are quite a few GMs who don’t know much about who they are drafting. which is fine so long as who you do have in charge of the draft knows what they’re doing. and i would imagine there were some “scouts” involved in the selection of poreda.

yes but there was quite some controversy with the Sox's top scout

and how he was doing his job, skimming bonuses, ect.

KW finally took charge in cleaning the farm system from corruption and I think that was what the radio announcer meant when he said Poreda was the first pick that had KW’s “finger prints on it”.

Im sure KW is listening to more reliable scouts now.

by Hatchetm on May 8, 2009 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

no one's stats means a great deal right now.

but pitchers in particular often mean next to nothing at this point. in poreda’s case, i would imagine that it’s being dictated how many breaking balls and offspeed pitches he throws per game. one only needs to listen a game to observe the odd sequencing for a pitcher of his type.

We already know what we have in Poreda

a guy who can pretty much succeed at the AA level on one pitch… He was sent back there to work on his secondary offerings…

It’s important for him to be throwing those pitches in counts and situations where he wouldn’t have last year… And if he gets hit around or walks a few more guys because he’s working on those pitches, so be it…

So when THT or any prospect evaluator is looking at his numbers right now and pointing out an increased walk-rate or a lack of development, well, they don’t know what they’re talking about…

Those ugly numbers are the sausages being made

by The Cheat on May 8, 2009 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

the fact that he is striking guys out with his curveball is interesting to me.

first, he gets some of them looking at it so he’s getting it over, which is good. second, though, i’m wondering if the strikeouts are due to players (many of whom saw poreda last year) simply not expecting poreda to throw a curveball – especially in certain counts – or if it’s becoming legit.

White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry

by larry on May 8, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions

That's kind of my point

I mean you’ve been listening to the games (I haven’t bothered) but unless you’re sitting there watching, following along pitch by pitch you can’t really say what’s going on.

You just have to rely on the Sox scouts… as soon as he has a breakthrough, or they think he’s ready to learn on the big league level, he’ll be up. It’s not like they have anyone blocking him.

by The Cheat on May 8, 2009 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

like you said, one needs to be watching the game for poreda in particular.

sox machine saw the (windy and cold) game.
Given the conditions, I honestly can’t say if Torres could’ve given a representative sample of his skills. But here’s what I did learn:

Torres throws four pitches. He’s got a fastball that’s anywhere from 91-94 m.p.h., and I thought I saw him cut it against a lefty. His slider is around 85, he threw a changeup around 81, and he’s got an overhand curve around 75.

But he’s largely a fastball-slider guy. I only saw a handful of changeups all night, and while he could throw his curve for strikes, it didn’t seem to fool anybody. There wasn’t a lot of snap to it.

He didn’t allow many hard-hit balls, perhaps because he nibbles. He masks his inefficiency by working fairly quickly, but the pitches pile up just the same. He seemed to have problems finishing off Jose Morales in particular, losing him with four straight balls after getting ahead 0-2.

I don’t want to make too many judgments off a terrible night for baseball, which caused some terrible defense behind him. But he’s had problems getting past five innings even in better conditions, so it’s hard to see him being considered rotation help at this point. He looks to be more like D.J. Carrasco insurance.

http://soxmachine.com/blogs/soxmachine/archive/2009/05/10/15946.aspx?CommentPosted=true#commentmessage

as a note, torres does indeed throw a cutter. jim’s description is in line with the scouting reports. inefficient pitcher who nibbles which compounds the stamina concerns. can throw a variety of pitches but none are plus. could be a backend starter (he throws more pitches than carrasco so that’s to his advantage as a starter) but a righty specialist reliever seems more likely.

Really bad defense!

“Torres allowed four runs over five innings, but two came in on a weak fly that the wind blew away from Andy Phillips in left. On a normal night, Phillips would’ve caught it to end the inning instead of flopping in vain. Another RBI single followed, so three of those runs should’ve been unearned.”

I really don’t think he pitched badly…….I think you could make a good argument that the drop in the outfield was an error and he should have only had one earned…..I agree with Jim though, Torres would be much more effective in the bullpen.

Signed: 1B Daryle Ward
Granted free agency: OF Jerry Owens
Placed on 7-day DL: LHP Kyle Aselton, LHP Garrett Johnson
Reinstated from DL: LHP Justin Edwards, OF Kent Gerst

Chicago’s third-round pick in ’06, Edwards made his first start since Sept. 1, 2007, last Wednesday, striking out nine Lakewood batters in five innings for low Class A Kannapolis. He missed all of ’08 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He’s a finesse lefty with a repeatable delivery and the potential for two average secondary offerings, so the strikeouts were an encouraging sign for the 21-year-old.

sure, he strikes out too much down there. but he also was punishing pitchers the rest of the time. gonna be hard to enforce any adjustments on a player when they’re raking. maybe AA pitchers will exploit his weaknesses more.

by The Cheat on May 12, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions

We often talk of small sample sizes, as 15 games would seem to be, but when is it appropriate to make a judgment from them?

I know that in the minor leagues, most evaluations will be made on small sample sizes of data and given the nature of a player’s progression, you can’t keep them in one level for two years in order to get a better sample size, so I assume that there are key stats where sample size is less important. I apologize if this was addressed in one of the primers, but I don’t recall seeing it.

And going off on a tangent, with the small strike zone afforded to Richard yesterday, it popped in my head that an outing such as that will really screw with a pitcher’s FIP (the metric du jour as far as I know).

Is it just assumed that umpire effects will average out, or is there any sort of analysis that you guys may know of that accounts for variations such as this? Also, are there pitchers that are perpetually squeezed?

You are right. But larry is actually a prick too.

by Hatchetm on May 13, 2009 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I think age plays an important role in it as well

In the Danks example, not that he was old for High A, but as an accomplished college hitter, he should not have any problem with High-A. If he does, that would be a red flag. He didn’t, so challenging him sooner rather than later makes sense to me.

This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

Related to TBH's post on minorleagueball, is there a player "type" that the Sox system is especially adept at developing?

ie a pitcher who needs secondary pitches, fielder’s that need work with the glove but have a good bat, shortening up on a hitter’s swing, etc.?

I ask this because I’ve often read that the Twins are good at producing pitchers that don’t walk many batters and utility infielders. Okay, I made up the second one. Other organizations are good at churning out other types of players…I think. Oakland supposedly stresses OBP….and that’s about all I’ve got.

Any information is appreciated.

I would say

Grinders, pitchers who need a cutter, hitters that strike out a lot, and prospects that bust on other teams

Once they get to the majors and work with Cooper, the pitchers generally get more confindence in their stuff and the control improves. The White Sox generally have very healthy players, and I’d say that’s the one thing they have done better than most, if not all, other clubs recently.

His BB/9 is above 3 (bad juju) and his K/BB is sitting at 2.3 or so (also bad juju), which seem to jive with Boof Bonser numbers. Seeing as he’s improved over his stint at Birmingham last year, are we looking at potential major league mop-up pitcher / long man or should we pencil him into Charlotte’s rotation for the next 4 years?

Abs Bother Beckham
Gordon Beckham, ss, White Sox: Beckham’s outstanding start to his pro career will be briefly on delay. The 2008 first-round pick hasn’t played since Thursday due to a strained abdominal muscle. Beckham, 22, has been crushing the Double-A Southern League with a .303/.381/.505 line through 26 games. He has only two home runs, but Birmingham’s home park suppresses home run output, so Beckham has piled up the doubles with 14, second in the SL to the Reds’ Todd Frazier.

more beckham and danks
At Class AA Birmingham, top prospect Gordon Beckham is still sidelined with an abdominal strain and is technically on the "7-day disabled list." Beckham was injured last Thursday but could be back by the end of the week.

Also at Birmingham, Jordan Danks is on fire after being promoted from Class A Winston-Salem.
Danks, younger brother of Sox starter John Danks, is 5-for-9 in 2 games with Birmingham. He leads off and plays center field and is likely to join the White Sox later this season if they continue to struggle.

likely to join the White Sox... not so much

He’d have to hit .556 for the rest of the season to fall into the “likely” category. He’s not on the 40 man, there’s no reason to put him there… The only reason to call him up in Sept would be if the Sox thought he might compete for the CF job next year. That’s about 2 years faster than can reasonably be expected

Maurice Gartrell

What is his deal? I know he is 25, but he’s tearing up Birmingham.

Draft related...

I’m wondering whether the Sox have allocated a bit more money for this year’s draft, seeing that (a) they have four picks in the first 75, (b) they cut payroll this season, and © they stand to lose upwards of $20 million off the payroll after this season.

by CWSKeith on May 13, 2009 11:45 PM CDT reply actions

i expect them to take the top player there

regardless of bonus expectations, i mean, its only a couple million and that doesnt impact a payroll like the white sox’s at this point

Someone with a BA account

Should check who they have us taking in their first mock draft that was just put up along with any other accompanying information.

by DirtySox on May 14, 2009 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

from the trib blog
Baseball America performed its first 2009 mock draft. BA projected that the Sox would select Indiana right-handed pitcher Eric Arnett with the 23rd overall selection. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Arnett has struck out 93 in 94 innings.

Arnett, a junior, has an 11-1 record and 2.78 ERA in 12 games.

I missed Sauer being

moved to the rotation . . . is that a permanent move?

This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

the messiah will return this weekend?
Shortstop Gordon Beckham could return to Double-A Birmingham’s lineup as soon as Saturday. Beckham, the Sox’s first pick in the 2008 draft, has been sidedlined for a week because of a pulled abdominal muscle.

Fred (Ohio): How disappointing is the performance of Dayan Viciedo? I thought he would have a period of adjustment; however, I didn’t think he would struggle this much with pitch recognition.

Ben Badler: I couldn’t believe people thought before the season that he had a chance to start the year in Chicago. I was surprised they even put him right in Double-A. He has raw power, but like you said, his pitch recognition looks woeful right now. He probably belongs in high Class A in the Carolina League.

Mike (Chicago): Are the White Sox possibly looking to draft Rex Brothers from Lipscomb with the 23rd pick?

Jim Callis: He’d be their type of guy but I don’t think he gets to them.

What are your thoughts on Andy Oliver?

It doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch that he will be available at 23.

by DirtySox on May 15, 2009 7:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I like him.

I have him as the third ranked college lefty currently behind Brothers and Paxton. He’s having a bad year causing his stock to drop but his strikeout numbers are still there and his wall rate isn’t terrible. Stuff wise from what I’ve read he has a plus fastball sitting in the low to mid 90’s range with plus command as well as a good change up and an improving slider/slurve. I believe he may be a Boras client though which would probably rule us out of drafting him (same as with Paxton).
