A co-worker ran into BA at the Hawks game

She says he’s “adorable, but quiet.”

Was on the fence until she got him to admit that his middle name is “Nikola.”

Apparently BA wasn’t macking on anyone (and drinking water). But his roommate was kind of a tool.

So there’s your BA story for the day.

It's like he's a cyborg sent from the future to draw 22 walks a season or something.

fangraphs mph. 91.3

he was hitting 92-93 last night, which i would define as plus. maybe above average is the correct term.

by Hatchetm on May 6, 2009 10:41 AM CDT up reply actions

they are equivalent

and why would velo be the only measure of your fastball? i assume you didn’t look at RHP only, either. the results yielded from the fastball is the best measure and while i know those aren’t widely available, i’ve looked myself.

THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY

by colintj on May 6, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

his fastball is straight as an arrow

and he doesn’t have pinpoint control. and he gets behind with his offspeed shit and the batter knows he’s gotta throw a fastball.

his FB% is like 80th out of 103. he doesn’t throw it enough IMO.

by Hatchetm on May 6, 2009 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

he's got a plethora of offspeed pitches all of which are solid

the curve is great and the slider is good. he doesn’t have a ton of confidence in the change yet. so basically, i disagree a lot.

and what do you think his problem is?

how about variance of pich velocity?

by Hatchetm on May 6, 2009 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions

i use kalk's pfx tool

here

as for the latter, you can go here for start by start pfx stuff. keep in mind that the pitch id algorithm blows. kalk’s is better, but it picks out splitters, sinkers and cutters where none necessarily exist.

holy shit
that is a gold mine of info. nobody ever told me that existing. its absolutely amazing what exists now versus just five years ago.

anyway, before you gave me that, i went through the game pitch by pitch and think the problem is primarily he couldn’t throw the fastball for strikes (only 22/46); four hits, 10 outs, 2 HR.

BUT, he wasn’t throwing much else for strikes either:
slider (4/8) (no outs/ no hits)
cutter (2/6) (no outs/ one hit)
curve (6/13) (two outs/no hits)
change (7/8) (one out/one hit)

i don’t care who you are if you can’t throw a fastball for strikes you’re going to get battered. Also I’m not sure you really need to throw 5 pitches, in fact i’m pretty sure you don’t. why not ditch the cutter or slider and focus on four pitches?

by Hatchetm on May 6, 2009 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

he doesn't throw a cutter to my knowledge

he’s fastball-curve-slider and has been for a while. he’s trying to add a change, the early results of which have been okay. aside from command, i don’t think he’s been materially different. and the difference there isn’t that much. he’s thrown 59% strikes this year, 63% last year.

how many pitches you throw is dependent on your platoon split strategy. typically, it’s fastball-change to oppo, fastball-slider to same, which implies a three pitch minimum. it also means having a split of some kind, since the fastball is easier to hit to for oppo handed hitters and the change is easier to get lift on than the slider (thus the neutralizing beauty of the cutter). gavin throws a curve, which has less of a platoon split, but also can’t be thrown in the same quantity as a (usually) more accurate slider or change.

btw, 50-55% of non-batted fastballs go for a ball on average, and it’s increasingly less for changes and sliders and even less for curves.

THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY

by colintj on May 6, 2009 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

i counted batted balls as strikes

so just yesterday his non batted fastball ball % was somewhere up around 75%.

cutter and slider are probably the same pitch. i just used what MLB.com said.

by colintj on May 6, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

it's more of a command issue with the fastball right now

but it’s leading to hard hit balls and narrower margins thanks to worse counts.

the problem being his suckage

which appears to be due to his inability to throw strikes, which is probably, but not necessarily, correctable.

by Hatchetm on May 6, 2009 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions

that plus an elevated BABIP will get you suckage

since the walks hurt all the more.

is currently 40th out of 47 in the AL so it will probably improve. i dunno. i see enough “stuff” there for him to be a pretty good pitcher.

The fastball is only ranked higher b/c his offspeed pitches are very solid and he doesn’t use it so much that hitters are expecting it. If he did use it a lot you’d see that rating drop like a rock.

Speed is a scalar quantity which refers to “how fast an object is moving.” Speed can be thought of as the rate at which an object covers distance.

Velocity is a vector quantity which refers to “the rate at which an object changes its position.”

that's really your choice of example?

the velocity of the car is how fast you are going. when you are going 90 mph, that is a rate. you are traveling so far in a certain amount of time. that is what velocity is. the same applies to a ball traveling sixty feet and six inches towards a catcher. they don’t call it velociting because that isn’t a word and it sounds retarded. it isn’t important what direction you were going when you were speeding, you were still speeding. in pitching, the direction is implied. the ball also has a rotational velocity, which effects the amount of break. a car and a baseball are not good for comparison in this aspect, or in any aspect really.

Velocity is speed in a specific direction

A car driving in a circle at 30 mph has a constant speed and a changing velocity.

I'm not sure how else we could explain this to you, but here's another try, using highlights from that link:
Imagine a person moving rapidly – one step forward and one step back – always returning to the original starting position. While this might result in a frenzy of activity, it would result in a zero velocity. Because the person always returns to the original position, the motion would never result in a change in position. Since velocity is defined as the rate at which the position changes, this motion results in zero velocity.
Velocity is a vector quantity…
It would not be enough to say that an object has a velocity of 55 mi/hr.
For instance, you must describe an object’s velocity as being 55 mi/hr, east. This is one of the essential differences between speed and velocity. Speed is a scalar quantity and does not keep track of direction; velocity is a vector quantity and is direction aware.

Basically, as TAEG originally pointed out (sarcastically), we CAN refer to pitches by velocity because their DIRECTION (TO THE PLATE) is already implied.

I am arguing semantics and I am right because

it would be described as Velocity across the board if I was wrong. Instead it is referred to as Pitch Speed. You can check out one of Colin’s graphs if you disagree.

Yes, because "speed" is also an acceptable measurement of the rate at which something is moving. Nobody is saying you can't say "speed" to discuss pitching. But we are saying that "velocity" is also a way to measure pitches...

because they are very much changing position in a specified direction.

Speed and velocity: both acceptable measurements of how fast something is moving.
Velocity merely denotes direction of the object….which, in pitching, we all know to be “towards the plate.”

No need to get feisty. I've refrained this long from flat-out calling you an idiot. I thought I very nicely presented those examples from the article to help you understand it better.

This is not your opinion vs everyone else’s here…you are trying to argue with science.
U-God’s not going to “change his stance,” because that would imply he’s arguing an opinion rather than scientific FACT.

You should really sit back, stop fighting the rest of us who are trying to learn you on this topic, and try to make sense of what is written.

Because you, me, and every last mother-fucker on this planet knows where a baseball pitch should be directed. It absolutely can be implied. Just like gravity implies DOWN.

You do not win. You will not find another soul on this site who thinks you’ve “won.”
Besides, this isn’t a competition. Nobody’s competing with you – we are attempting to teach you something so you don’t look like a complete fool the next time you try correcting someone for referring to a pitch’s velocity.

Figure it out. And try to also figure out how to discern when people are helping you vs fighting you.

If you want to get better at math, consider taking a class or two at a community college in your spare time

it can only help you in the long run, as knowledge in math / statistics helps you balance your checkbook, decide if a sub-prime mortgage is a good idea, understand how reasonable the media blitz about the swine flu really is, etc.

On top of that, community college courses are fairly cheap and you might meet some interesting people.

Overall Getz has done a very nice job in my opinion both at the plate and defensively.

He is not spectacular and that is what these guys like Cowley need to be impressed. He also made an assanine comment about if Beckham gets called up, and Alexei moves to center, we will be downgrading our defense at 2 positions. How is that true when Ozzie believes Alexei could be a top 5 defensive centerfielder? I am just tired of these guys making crap up when it is their job to follow the team, how about instead of writing fantasy trade rumors they delve into some stats and figure out why these guys are bad and what they could do to improve instead of recommending blowing up the team. Pitchers have bad games, even the good ones aren’t great all year. Look at how bad CC was to start the season last year. Now Floyd is now Gavin “Fraud” in his eyes after a couple of bad starts? When I turn on the radio or open up a news paper I want to here something a little more indepth than Cowley’s personal opinion. I know I give you guys crap about stats, but I do read and appreciate the articles that go indepth into the sabermetrics. Some of it is interesting, but some of the methods I believe are flawed such as fielding metrics.

I understand what you are trying to accomplish. Of course he helped the team get in. I was just trying to point at the couple games he really sucked and say he wasn’t very good overall. small sample size but we are known for that round hurr. If there was a stat to put on the importance of games late in the season, compare his performance in those games, assign some sort of measure of value, he did not help us get there. I thought both would have been questionable calls, especially the second with Drogba. My Chilean broadcast thought both were penalties.

Unfortunately it now gives them the latitude to drop 9 or 10 back.

The White Sox could have had Joba Chamberlain (41st overall) or Adrian Cardenas (37th) instead of the Texas southpaw.

"could have had"

i assume you’re meaning in the magical world where the white sox pay significantly over slot.

"I am amazed we’re as high as 17th in the baserunning metric, and can’t even imagine what Atlanta must be doing to be graded that much worse — seriously, do they just swing then roam randomly around the infield oblivious of the concept of the "base"?." -TAEG

or, if you're a DIY kinda guy

you put blockquote tags around what you’re typing, e.g.:

<blockquote>the text you’re encapsulating</blockquote> (note the slash in the closing tag)

and preview, preview, preview so you know it will come up right. sometimes i’ve noticed the renderer fuck up on new lines and need to edit. if you’re in a jam and need a line separated between text in your quote, just use a <br> (line break) tag, no closing tag necessary.

my mental theory of the day

is just to draft raw athletes and hope you can make them into baseball players. yeah i know some teams have leaned that way at times, but i mean really go overboad. draft star shot-putters and stuff like that.

took over fangraphs . . . ‘that was a pretty good article, written by a pretty good author.’ Nice work . . . yikes.

This is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about this is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

Kyle McCulloch says:
May 6, 2009 at 5:12 pm

I’m right-handed. And when a guy goes 41st overall to the richest team in baseball for well above slot due largely to his bonus demands, that means pretty much any team could’ve paid an arm and a leg for said player. Yes, I pretty much suck, but considering you’re holding yourself out here as some kind of authority on past drafts, feel free to acknowledge the context of the slot system and at least try to look up what hand I throw baseballs with next time before clowning me for not being Joba.

The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.

mlb gameday

said broadway finished the game with 10 straight changeups (not including the intentional walk).

i guess anything under 86 MPH is a changeup.

how on earth does a guy like this get drafted, let alone make it to the major league club?

whenever he gets called up and pitches the innings are just damn shaky. as far as i am concerned he is just a tad better than MacDougal at his worst

Nix, who is batting .429 since being activated last Friday, could find a permanent spot in the lineup if he continues to produce.
Where? SS is Alexei’s and Getz has been dependable though not spectacular at 2B…. I see only one option
