Carlos Quentin not expected back before All-Star break; Still is not stretching enough
Manager Ozzie Guillen doesn't expect slugger Carlos Quentin to return before the All-Star break. Quentin said he tore a tendon in his left foot on May 25 and just recently started jogging.

If the Sox are out of it post All-Star, Guillen said why should they put Quentin out there.
Quentin wants to be back before All-Star Break, but Oz said very unlikely. There is a chance he could be shut down rest of year.

I'm very close to punting on this season.
Watching the lineup we trot out there on a daily basis is slow torture.
If I weren't so competitive by nature, I'd probably say, "punting unit."
Maybe I just need to see us get 8 or more back first. Fuck.
if you're so competitive, why don't you get your ass in there and stretch quentin's foot and craft some orthotics for him. and tell him to man the fuck up already.
if you’re not doing that, sounds like you’re saying punting unit.

Well, I'll tell you this.
I’ve known some running friends who did run through it and endure some incredible pain. I myself did as well years ago with shin splints. I can’t get in Carlos’ skin or head and I’m by no means labeling him as weak, but I truly have seen it first hand where people have competed at a high level with PF. That’s why I’ve said what I did earlier.

there are two problems here.
1.Shin splints are not a torn tendon. PF is not a torn tendon.
2. Running does not require the stopping and starting and standing necessary in this sport. While it may be possible to focus through the pain in running, playing baseball at a high level with the sprinting and batting and all that shit is pretty hard when you have an injury bothering you as severe as this. It is different, and I don’t want him out there if he isn’t going to be productive and won’t heal up anyway.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jun 10, 2009 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions
regarding one, PF is certainly a tear in the ligament (who knows if quentin or gonzales were using proper terms of if they're talking about something else)
second, what does a popping sound, which quentin said he heard, usually indicate? this wasn’t exactly difficult to diagnose as a rather big problem.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
didn't we take it at the time as something nagging and long lasting?
this sounds (and who knows what the hell Gonzalez meant, he’s not a health professional, obvs) different. something tore and needs time to heal and playing in the meantime is simply not feasible. before, it was just a matter of adjusting to pain and orthotics.
either way, Will Carroll will weigh in eventually.

As far as PF being a tear in the ligament
I wasn’t aware, but really it shouldn’t matter. This is a new ballgame— there’s certainly a difference aesthetically between “nagging injury he’ll have to deal with all season,” and “torn tendon, out for a month and a half, maybe all year.”

Really, STFU.

I'm not going to say that this is a death sentence
but it is damn close. I would be very surprised at this point for them to come back strong.
The last two days have been a knife in the heart of the season.
I hate to say it, but Quentin may be our Wood/Prior.

Fire Sale Impending
KW: if the team doesn’t pick it up hard decisions will have to be made. That’s basically what he just said.

KW will also be looking to add good contracts
so i would also think Richard, Allen, maybe JorDanks (dn what the org thinks of him…), and Poreda will be available for the right pieces.

I don't know.
This isn’t the time to be buying. Good contracts like the ones you’re talking about are just too valuable and we just don’t have enough ammo.

Followed by "analysis" that said "the 30 games or so leading to the AS break"
Maybe fire at some point, but for now he’s just playing with matches.

i hope the term "punting unit" becomes popular around here
it works for a number of reasons.

More
KW said Ozzie’s timetable on Quentin is off, and the outfielder should be back quicker than Guillen thinks.
KW and Fields talked. Kenny GM offered very little details. Make that no details.

did he even post a mock draft?

let's be honest
we were banking on them having everything go right like last year. Those optimistic, anyway. The organization left little room for sucktitude(Contreras, Colon, BA, Fields, Getz) and injury(Quentin… can’t bear to call him Q right now.) In hindsight, it was a mistake. They got rid of guys who they grew tired of and we’re reaping the benefits.
But hey, we have the best bullpen.

Getz has had problems too
broken finger, knackered ankle, virus, he’s not had an extended run when he’s been fully fit. His promotion to MLB has had fitness issues that have prevented an extended healthy run on the team.
Agreed.

At what point is Q considered injury prone?
Shoulder, hand, foot. Equal opportunity patient.
Shaq was able to get through PF in a few months after putting off surgery a few months so he could enjoy his off-season.
if he was a horse - they would take him out the back and shoot him
no matter how good he is when he plays – what are we looking at 50 games? plus or minus 15?
Durability is a big part of being a player who adds value – at the moment he’s adding nothing.
no.
if he were a horse, they would not shoot him because it would be really fucking stupid to shoot something from which you can make millions in stud fees. if you were a horse, on the other hand, they would shoot you.

It's time to go grab an outfield bat.
I just don’t see the point in gutting the farm for a Starting Pitcher when the only reason the Sox aren’t in first right now is the offense.
