Where is My Minor Leaguer? White Sox Minor League Update
With the 2009 minor league season approaching its halfway point, which White Sox minor league player has disappointed you the most with his lack of progress this year, either stagnation or regression? Were you still holding out hope for Kyle McCulloch? Perhaps an injury hit player like Jose Martinez or Jeff Marquez? Maybe you were the guy touting Gregory Infante? Or thought Dayan Viciedo was ready for major league action immediately? As always, and especially since we all have our favorite prospects, write-in candidates are welcome.

Has there been any articles on the Sox fishing around when the international window opens in July?
Can we expect the Sox to be active there?
by CWSKeith on Jun 13, 2009 6:42 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
another request: is there any place with a database for international signings?
i don’t have much of a handle over how many signings there are or what the okay, good and best get. it’s got to be a decent number since the Sox fill out two full DSL teams, right?

sox are only fielding one team this year.
always tough to get info, outside of the top guys. seems like there’s more interest this year, though (just like with the draft) so that may change. BP has kiley covering it for them now (highly recommend his articles and they’ll give you some of the answers about bonuses) and ben badler does a good job for BA, as well.

This may be a silly question considering recent history but will the White Sox be active in the amateur free agent market this July?

this is one of the stupidest dialogues i've had on here. congrats.
ben knows who i am. when we talk, i’m not asking him “who do you think is the bestest white sox prospect in the whole wide world.” i’m not particularly interested in coming off as a dumbfuck neophyte when i ask a question.

If Ben knows who you are, and that you don't ask
naive questions, why mask it? Why not say “I’m carrying the water for someone” and ask the question? And if this is a stupid dialogue you brought it on yourself by not asking a straightforward fooking question. And if I ask you to be my mouthpiece for communicating with a guy you know you can be as direct as you like and say “Some SSS idiot wants to know your thoughts on ‘x’” and I’ll be satisfied.

He just took a 6-pitch walk without swinging the bat against a lefty. At least one of them was hittable.

great falls update
Cron said he anticipates that second-round pick Josh Phegley, a catcher from Indiana, and college pitchers Bryan Morgado (3rd round, Tennessee) and Kyle Bellamy (fifth round, Miami) will be dispatched to Great Falls once they sign.
Meanwhile, Cron said several members of last year’s Pioneer League championship Voyager team will be returning to the Electric City. The list includes infielders Jesus Avila and Doug Thennis, outfielders Johny Celis and Jordan Cheatam, and pitchers Daniel Albritton and Matt Wickswat.
Also coming to Great Falls are a pair of players with big-league pedigrees, Jordan Herr and Todd Gossage.

The choice has to be Jeff Marquez
only because he was the centerpiece in the Swisher deal. Shit, I can beat a dead horse with an axe all I want, but we should have held on to Swisher longer. Betemit DFAed, Marquez sucks, and the reliever we got is a nobody. I would rather have Swisher and the shaving cream pies. Although Buehrle started that tradition years ago. I know many of you like to give Hall and Swish credit for that but Mark was doing that long before those 2 players were even a twinkle in KDub’s eye.

Holmberg Signed
Not sure how news worthy it is.
What made it easy was Holmberg agreed to the “slot” money for the 71st overall selection. “He wasn’t trying to push for some ridiculous number,” Port Charlotte coach Bob Bruglio said.
Holmberg will fly Monday to Chicago for a physical. From there, he will head Tuesday to Bristol, Va., where he will begin his pro career with the Rookie League Sox of the Appalachian League on June 23.

I agree with Andrecheck's analysis where tempering a fan's expectations of draft picks is concerned
but I disagree with the statement that “sabermetrically minded teams can take advantage of this information” in the sense that if the Nationals were to take Jared Mitchell (a college hitter) with the first pick of the draft instead of Strasborough (college pitcher), it doesn’t automatically mean that he’s going to be more valuable over the long term. Taking a less polished player, for lack of a better description, just because he’s a college hitter does not make much sense to me.
Now, if a team was in a position where they graded out two players equally, one being a college hitter and the other being a HS pitcher, this analysis could be useful. I didn’t see Andrecheck qualify his statement as such, but I will assume that is what he meant.
Interesting analysis overall.

BP draft recap
Chicago White Sox
Picks in First Three Rounds
1: (23) Jared Mitchell, OF, Louisiana State; (38) Josh Phegley, C, Indiana
2: (61) Trayce Thompson, OF, Santa Margarita HS (CA); (71) David Holmberg, LHP, Port Charlotte HS (FL)
3: (102) Bryan Morgado, LHP, Tennessee
Quick Take: The White Sox were looking at high-ceiling position players the whole way with the 23rd pick, and they had to be thrilled that Mitchell was still on the board when their selection came up. Phegley was a head-scratcher at 38, though nobody questions the bat, but the White Sox are one of the few who think he can stay at catcher; the consensus outside of their organization was that he was downright awful there, despite having the tools to play behind the plate. Trayce Thompson’s upside surpasses that of even Mitchell, and while his being picked this high was surprising, it’s only because he was seen as unsignable by many clubs, so if he signs credit to the White Sox for gauging how willing he was to go pro. Holmberg is a big lefty with a lot of projection, but like Thompson his current skills require some dreaming. Morgado is another arm-strength type with plus-plus velocity for a southpaw, but his command and secondary stuff lag behind.
Notable Later Picks: The closer at Miami, righty Kyle Bellamy (5th) doesn’t profile as a ninth-inning type in the majors, but he’s pressure-proven, has an outstanding sinker, and could move quickly. Fellow righty Ryan Buch (8th) is a big, raw, power arm, but most intriguing is 15th-round selection Dane Williams, who some saw as the highest-ceiling high school pitcher in Florida, though he’s expected to be a very difficult sign.
Final Summary: The White Sox have now firmly moved away from their earlier overly-safe drafts of the past, and by focusing on upside, they’ve added a lot of it to the system while mixing in some safe college types as well.

steven upchurch assigned to bristol
Nineteen-year-old pitcher Steven Upchurch is one of those guys. The Alabama native is in his second season with the BriSox, after going 2-2 with a 3.26 ERA in seven games (four starts) last summer.
"I’m very excited to get started," Upchurch said. "It’s a huge honor for me to be here. I worked hard during the offseason. Hopefully, I won’t stay down here long and get moved up to [Low-Class A] Kannapolis. But like I said, it’s great to be here again."
Upchurch spurned an offer from Auburn University after the Chicago White Sox selected him in the 12th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft.
He has matured since his last stint with the Sox.
"The biggest difference between this year and last year, is last year I started out as an 18-year-old and everybody else was a lot older than me," Upchurch said. "Basically, I was getting used to going from high school to professional. It’s a lot different atmosphere.
"It’s all about maintaining poise and being repetitious with my form and just being able to complete my mechanics over and over. I need to keep the ball down and make quality pitches."
Upchurch also is glad to bid adieu to the Sox’s spring training facility in the Arizona desert.
"It’s an extremely high relief for me," Upchurch said. "I’m used to being in Alabama, so we’re more back on my side of the United States now."

BA article
Callis stated that Jared Mitchell could potentially be the #1 prospect as seasons end . . . I am having a hard time finding a feasible situation where he could rank that high . . . strange comment. Flowers, Danks, Allen, Viciedo . . . a lot of things would have to happen for this to be true.
White Sox outfielder Jered Mitchell (No. 23) could rank No. 1 if they have strong debuts and no one goes off in their organization’s upper minors.

Really? He hit a triple?
Tyler Flowers, C, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Wednesday’s stats: 2-for-5, 3B, HR (9), 5 RBIs, K
One of the prospects received from Atlanta in the Javier Vasquez deal, Flowers is a 250-pound behemoth, so what’s more shocking than him hitting a triple last night is the fact that it’s actually his second three-bagger on the year. He’s still a below-average receiver, but he’s also an offensive force with power and plenty of patience that has led to a .282/.425/.516 line in 56 games.

He just needs to stretch it and then it'll be fine.
I had a wrist injury once as well (layup), I just stretched it and everything worked itself out (layup).

marrero homers in his first AA at bat.
1-4 on the day. retherford tied the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a double, flowers – who is apparently the motherfucking boogeyman of the southern league – was IBBed again, and viciedo singled in cj for the win.

also, what do you think of marrero's chances in AA?
6 months younger than Allen, but Marrero didn’t handle W-S nearly as well as Allen.

i'm in between on him.
he’s still intriguing. and i’m not sure what the sox think of him. last month, when he started to play first base some because, according to the newspaper, the sox wanted him to gain positional flexibility, that was a bit of a flag. guys who are doing that in A ball usually aren’t thought of too highly. on the other hand, i also thought they may have been grooming him as allen’s replacement since there was no clear 1B successor for when allen was inevitably promoted and also because of the jammed up barons outfield. he played first today. of course, if that’s a long term plan for marrero, highly questionable if the bat plays there. on the other hand, if it was an effort to get him in the lineup, that’s a good thing.

dear mr. larry,
I’m curious as where you would rank Mitchell on the 20-80 scale. If he’s a toolsy guy with potential I would expect low current numbers, except speed, with plenty of room to grow….?

According to starting pitcher John Danks, younger brother Jordan Danks spent Friday in Chicago getting his wrist examined, with the results expected on Saturday.
Jordan Danks, drafted in 2008, had been yet another one of the wave of talented players coming up through the Sox system, but about two weeks ago, started experiencing pain in the wrist on a check swing in Class AA Birmingham.
“He just said it didn’t feel right,‘’ John Danks said. "I look at the numbers almost every morning, and ever since he started complaining about the wrist the numbers had gone down. He was at like .340 and now .308. Hopefully, they can figure it out.’’
