Ozzie Guillen on moving Scott Linebrink out of the far too rigidly-defined set-up role: "I don’t know," Guillen said. "That’s like a slap in the face. That’s his role, he’s been pitching in that role since we got him. Last week, he just didn’t get it done. We have to continue to see how he throws. We have a few other guys there, I’m going to stick with him as long as I can.’’
"I talked to him in Milwaukee (last weekend), and he said he was fine," Guillen said. "He just needs to throw more strikes. Every time you come out of the bullpen, you have to throw strikes. You have to. If not, you’re going to get hit and everyone knows that.’’

correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that if you throw more pitches in the strike zone, hitters would try to hit those pitches more often
Thus, I have concluded that the statement “He just needs to throw more strikes. Every time you come out of the bullpen, you have to throw strikes. You have to. If not, you’re going to get hit and everyone knows that” has a logical flaw to it.
Oh Ozzie, you really know how to get me, don’t you? Come here youuuuu and give me a hug.

i think it's usually understood that when players and coaches talk about throwing strikes
they don’t mean grooving a 85 MPH fastball. they mean good strikes. you know, command.

Yeah, so when Linebrink is warming up in the bullpen and notices he's not able to throw good strikes, who is supposed to tell him to sit the fuck down, rather than call him to the mound?
Pitchers can tell if they don’t have their stuff.

investigating further:
looking through Linebrink’s 2008 pitch f/x, i don’t see any reason why he can’t be a decent reliever. and his velocity looks okay so far this year.
…but then there’s the little matter of his 2009 contact rate, which is not good and way off from his career rate. his K rate looks good, but if it’s inflated by K’s looking that’s probably unsustainable. obviously, he’s got command issues. so right now he’s a flyball pitcher nearing 4 BB/9 who can’t get a whiff when he needs it. that’s a pretty obvious recipe for disaster. Ozzie can’t treat him like a vet with a long leash if he wants this team to win games. the offense isn’t good enough. any time the Sox have a lead, he should probably treat it as a high leverage situation.

the only shot of her on her back is inconclusive, as she has a tank top pulled up and it may be holding them up a bit, but they might be augmented some since they seem to be standing up and not falling down to the sides like a real set would, but this girl was definitely not an a-cup beforehand. the NSFW shots are here if anyone else wants to guess real or fake. 5 games
4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 4BB, 5K, 3 HR — 2 L (in the two tie games he entered) 2 successful outings in 3+ run games and the blown 4-run lead today, which is too large to be classified as a blown save)

I was thinking (and someone else posted) that he shouldn't be used back-to-back anymore
He’s old and coming off an injury. Honestly, the Sox got a half-season of very good pitching from him which is more than I thought they would.
I wasn’t that upset that KW gave a middle reliever that contract — I was more upset that KW gave that contract to reliever who profiled to suck. But, his stuff looks better than I thought it would. I think could actually still be effective, but Ozzie needs to use him differently.

Jermaine Dye could sit Friday night
Right-fielder Jermaine Dye hasn’t finished each of his last three games to protect a sore left calf and manager Ozzie Guillen is considering giving Dye a rest Friday night when the White Sox play at Cincinnati.
“Hopefully, with a day off, he’ll feel better, but we’re going by ear,” Guillen said. “We gave him back-to-back days off [Sunday and Monday], and that didn’t help him. I have to be careful with him. If Dye goes down, [ Carlos] Quentin is already down, and it will be tough on us.”
Guillen still plans to start backup Ramon Castro to catch Jose Contreras.

Maybe it isn't just us....
It is uncanny how the Yankees, more than almost any other team, seem to struggle so mightily against unfamiliar pitchers. It has not, however, gone unnoticed. Joked one veteran scout Thursday night: "I don’t know, if I were a team playing the Yankees in the postseason, I’d call up three pitchers from the minor leagues – any three pitchers – and take my chances."

SNAP OUT OF IT, ALL OF YOU!!!!
I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!!!
Look at yourselves. What a bunch of whining little pansies. So what if Linbrink craps his pants because Ozzie can’t figure out how to change the ordering of his bullpen (perhaps he used a sharpie on the dry erase board and doesn’t want to admit his fuck up?). We can’t sit here and dwell upon the past! We’ve got plenty of half-assed trade speculation to engage in, plenty of crappy photoshops to post, plenty of redundant minor league questions to pose, and plenty of blasphemous religious jokes to exploit!
Now quit crying in your fucking beers, sack up and get out there and be the pack of a-holes I know you can be! LET’S GO TEAM!!!

good post
What I dont get is that ’05 Ozzie didnt have this hard line approach to who pitches where out of the pen. We had half a season from Hermanson nailing it down(no ERA into July if I remember correctly) then Marte, Shingo, and finally Bobby nailing down the 9th to go wire to wire with Politte vulturing a save in there too for good measure. There was more flexibility it seemed. Now sure, it helps to get career years from just about all those guys I mentioned as well as Cotts, but still, it didnt seem like Ozzie said its the 8th inning therefore so and so pitches, it was more on his gut then, and now its like the guy is phoning it in.
I understand the reasoning that people want to know their role and what is expected of them and all that, but if you are a pitcher and you really want to know whats expected of you, then be good enough to be a starter. Or even a closer. Otherwise, be ready to go at a moments notice no matter what. Thats your role, thats the bullpen.

perhaps Ozzie is getting stale
but he is still one of the best pitching managers in the game.

well, Liney's been shit.
I’d like to see Jenks in their more often. However, the starting pitching has turned around. I’m not worried. Mild slump.

Yesterday was hubris on Ozzie's part.
Everyone blew him the day before for all his wondrous managerial moves – bunting, player selection, strategy – and the next it went straight ot his head. He’d never make it as a trader – too macho, tough for him to act on the realization he’s made a mistake (and correct it) without looking “less than a man”.
Yeah, I said it. Too macho. Limit losses to small ones, not ones that lose games that were in the bag.

That was my thought upon reading his commentary here about Linebrink and continuing to use him...
He’s obviously wrong and made a giant managing mistake yesterday…and he can’t fucking admit to it. Instead, feeds some bs about ‘talking to him last week’ and ‘you gotta throw strikes’….come on, Ozzie, you’re wrong, admit it. How many high-leverage situations does Linebrink need to blow before you stop giving him chances?
He’ll throw Che in the doghouse for his rough offensive start, but he won’t make Liney sit in the corner of the bullpen with his dunce hat, where he belongs….because that would somehow be admitting that he’s been misusing him.
Buncha crap. Especially when you consider what else we have sitting in the bullpen, idle.
I didn’t want to see Liney yesterday, but admit that I thought a 4-run cushion might be enough for him.
When he blew that to a 1-run cushion (and created his own high-leverage situation), no question, the fucker should have been pulled.
Just [expletive] Fuck It.

easy there, sigmund. the mistake wasn't putting linebrink in. it was leaving him in.

Who said anything about putting him in?
I stated that he needed to cut his losses and keep them minimal rather than compounding it by leaving him in. Don’t read things into comments that are not there. He was full of himself and refused to back down and admit Liney was a bad move. He personalized it – not his fault Liney didn’t have it, but it was his fault he didn’t cut and run sooner.

you know what else is like a slap in the face? watching the manager of the team you root for put in a crap pitcher and cost the team a game against your crosstown rivals.
brian anderson would've caught that...
