Peel Slowly and See White Sox Minor League Update

Last week we polled which White Sox minor league player has disappointed you the most with his lack of progress this year. This week, let's discuss the converse: which prospect has encouraged you the most with his progress this year. Considering the overall improvement in the system, there are some solid candidates. Daniel Hudson, who, in a half season, has played at three levels? Jordan Danks, who similarly has climbed to AA in less than a year? Tyler Flowers, the motherfucking boogeyman of the Southern League? Charlie Shirek? Maybe there's a player who isn't at Birmingham...oh yeah, thanks for promoting Brandon Allen. As always, and especially since we all have our favorite prospects, write-in candidates are welcome.

with Morel being the fast mover — he’s blocked so he’s not going anywhere — but Danks has obviously proved he’s no A-baller

Danks

I really thought the high K rates would catch up to him in AA . . . and they have not . . . yet. He has really impressed this year. Honorable mention to Hudson.

nevin griffith also back in bristol
Following his eight-game, 8 1/3-inning stint in Bristol in 2007, Nevin Griffith figured DeVault Stadium was in his rear view mirror, and who could blame him?

The Chicago White Sox’s second-round draft pick that summer had the world by the tail and a signing bonus of nearly $400,000 in his pocket. A hard-throwing righthander with a wipeout slider, Griffith’s path to the Major Leagues seemed a smooth one.

“I didn’t think I’d be back here,” he said Saturday night.
Tommy John surgery has a way of changing things, though.

draft signings and bonus
6 193 Justin Collop RHP Toledo Ohio $122,500
10 313 Nick Ciolli OF Indiana State Ind. $90,000
Scouts don’t love outfielder Nick Ciolli’s set-up at the plate, as he’s too spread out and has a long, funky swing. But he makes it work and batted .401/.431/.577 from the left side this spring. He has more gap power than home run pop, though, which could work against him as a corner outfielder in pro ball. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder has solid speed and a fringy arm.

White Sox
Promoted RHP Dan Hudson (5th, 2008) to Double-A Birmingham, the third rung of ladder the Old Dominion product has reached this season. Two other members of Chicago’s robust ‘08 draft class already have reached Double-A: Gordon Beckham and Jordan Danks. Hudson ranks seventh in the minors with 87 strikeouts after dealing nine of them in his eight-inning Barons debut.

Did you post any elaborative thoughts on Allen's call-up?

Is there something more to be read into it? Or is it just a case of him moving up the ladder? It’s not like he was dominating AA in the same manner he did at the end of last year. On the other hand, the jump from AA to AAA doesn’t seem to be all that much and it’s not like anybody was blocking Allen at Charlotte.

Also — are CJ and T-Flow far behind?

Not really

He was expected to be drafted a lot higher than the 8th which could have led to him returning to college in order to increase his stock, but obviously that didn’t happen. I hadn’t heard any reports of him being after top dollar.

Big man, big bat

Brandon Allen, 1B, White Sox (Triple-A Charlotte)
Monday’s stats: 3-for-5, HR (1), 3 RBI, K
One can read a lot of things into Allen’s move up to Triple-A. He was having a good year at Double-A (.290/.372/.452), but he wasn’t killing it, so was this a roster numbers game, a precursor to a possible big league look, or none of the above? No matter what, the big, beefy slugger is enjoying his new digs, going 8-for-14 with two doubles and a home run in his first four games for the Knights, while earning plenty of accolades from scouts, some of whom see him as an above-average big league first baseman down the road.

great falls opener
Tonight’s starting lineup for the Voyagers likely will include Thennis at first base, Jeff Tezak at second, Jesus Avila at third at Zach Kayne at shortstop. The catcher will be Kevin Dubler, while the outfield candidates include Kyle Colligan, Nick Ciolli, Kenneth Gilbert, Jordan Cheatham and Celis. One of the outfielders will serve as designated hitter.

Tonight’s starting pitcher will be Terry Doyle, a 6-4, 225-pound righthander who pitched for the Bristol (Tenn.) Class A team a year ago. The top relievers figure to include lefty Enriche Lechuga and righties Dan Albritton, Justin Collop, Justin Keuhn and Brett Graffy.

bristol pitchers
Right-hander Nevin Griffith is the likely opening night starter. Griffith pitched for Bristol two years ago, but suffered an elbow injury last season at advanced-rookie Great Falls (Mont.) and underwent Tommy John surgery.

"He’s fine now, he’s healthy and he’s ready to go," Hasler said of Griffith. "He threw a simulated game [Friday] and threw the ball very well. I expect some big things out of him.

"He just had a little setback. We’re going to play a little catch up and get some innings in. This is the year he’s expected to turn the corner."

Steven Upchurch (2-2, 3.26 ERA), Brent DeFoor (1-0, four saves, 2.76 ERA) and Murilo Gouvea (4-1, one save, 7.28 ERA) were all in Bristol last season and have plenty of potential.

Meanwhile, left-hander David Holmberg was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 71st overall pick earlier this month in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Holmberg starred at Port Charlotte (Fla.) High School and passed up a scholarship to the University of Florida to take the professional route.

A slew of college players will also begin the season in Bristol, among them former University of Miami closer Kyle Bellamy, Charles Delk (Clemson), Alex Farotto (South Carolina) and Phillip Negus (Wake Forest).

last nights outing moves him into 4th in ERA and still second in K’s. Also, I believe at one point last night he had retired 27 straight hitters. Still waiting for you to admit that you just might be wrong on Torres. Allen may have gone 0-3 but he did have a crucial RBI.

sickels updates the progress of his 'sleepers'
Dexter Carter, RHP, White Sox
22 years old, 3-2, 3.35 with a 94/20 K/BB in 78 innings for Class A Kannapolis, 75 hits allowed. Love the K/IP ratio. Drafted in the 13th round out of Old Dominion last year, he has good stuff but had severe control problems in college. Has turned that around as a pro, much more effective against the wooden bat. K/IP makes this look like a good call so far.

Dan Hudson, RHP, White Sox
22 years old, has pitched at three levels already this year, promoted to Double-A late last week. Is a combined 6-5, 2.43 with an 87/17 K/BB in 74 innings, just 49 hits allowed. Excellent component ratios, which he had last year in college also despite a disappointing season overall for Old Dominion. Keep a really close eye on this one.

Power was one big question mark on Danks coming out of college, but he’s starting to show some pop as a pro. If he can just hit for average power in the big leagues, he has the potential to be an average to above-average big leaguer.

Brian Myrow was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 1B/DH had been on Charlotte’s DL. Mike Grace retired, he had been the third catcher for Winston-Salem. And, utility player Luis Sierra was promoted to Winston-Salem from Kannapolis to take Grace’s spot. This leaves one open roster spot in Winston-Salem and two in Kannapolis.

Is that catcher Miguel Gonzalez someone to keep an eye on?

I see he was signed out of Venezuela last year — don’t remember hearing a bunch about that. I’m just looking at the age — doesn’t turn 19 until December. He’s gotta be the youngest guy on the Bristol roster, yes? //checks for self — yep, he’s the only 1990 birthday.

In any case I don’t really expect you to give an answer to my question in the topic — seeing how young most of these guys are I don’t suspect you (or anyone) could give me anything other than a token answer. Asking differently, then — do you know anything about him? Anything commentary from scouting folks or otherwise?

sickels' thoughts on the future of mitchell
Jared Mitchell will sign fairly quickly with the White Sox. He will be assigned to the Great Falls in the Pioneer League, where he will hit .372/.401/.474 with 11 steals in 34 games. He’ll be promoted to Kannapolis in the Sally League at that point, where he’ll hit .200/.244/.297 with two steals in 19 games, leaving people to wonder about his bat after all. In 2010 he’ll play for 87 games for Winston-Salem, hitting .297/.398/.454 with 29 steals, then will move to Double-A Birmingham where he’ll hit .259/.337/.410 with 14 steals in 48 games.

No. 12 DAN HUDSON, RHP
 WHITE SOX

Team: Double-A Birmingham (Southern)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 2.25 ERA, 12 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 16 SO
The Scoop: Chicago’s system has improved as much any organization this year, and Hudson is one of the big reasons. Hudson, an ‘08 fifth-rounder out of Old Dominion, began the season in low Class A—now he’s mowing down hitters in Double-A. Promoted to Birmingham for a June 20 start, Hudson has struck out more than a batter an inning in each of his three stops this season.

Bob (Stockton, CA): Teams that sign NDFA once the draft concludes: are they just looking for a few players to fill in their short season rosters or do they actually think these kids could climb the ranks?

Matthew Eddy: It’s rare for a college player who has been passed over in at least three drafts (high school, college junior & senior) to make an impact in the big leagues, but it does happen from time to time. Reds backup catcher Ryan Hanigan and Bobby spring to mind. But in reality, many of these guys are signed to flesh out short-season rosters. Just witness how quick teams are to release so many of them the following year. Two minor league NDFA jokers to watch: White Sox Double-A 2B C.J. Retherford and Twins RH reliever Rob Delaney.

i agree that nothing i read suggested he should be that low. he may have said some silly things to scouts about how much he’d need to sign or something like that but, considering he signed with the sox quickly, not that likely. he obviously doesn’t quite have a positional “home” right now but, with that bat, that shouldn’t cause him to have dropped that far.

Mitchell Drawing Praise
Jared Mitchell, the White Sox’s first pick in the June amateur draft, is expected to agree to terms soon.

Mitchell’s superb performance garnered him more praise across the nation. Among them was San Francisco Chronicle columnist and longtime baseball writer Bruce Jenkins.

In Jenkins’ popular 3-Dot Lounge column that’s published on Saturdays, he raised the question of whether San Francisco should have selected Mitchell, who was selected 23rd overall, with the sixth pick in the draft.

Beginning Wednesday, street light banners commemorating a series of special events in Chicago are going on the auction block for charity.

Some of the banners were shown off Tuesday, including those featuring Pres. Barack Obama both before and after his election.

A White Sox World Series Championship banner, signed by pitcher Mark Buehrle, is also being sold, as is a Blackhawks playoff banner signed by Denis Savard and Stan Mikita.

The bidding starts at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Daley Center. Money raised goes to help the Chicago Anti-hunger Federation and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
