ozzie wants pods back next year
Scott Podsednik has solved the White Sox’s leadoff problems in 2009.

He’s also creating a dilemma for 2010.

Brian Anderson is inching closer toward securing the full-time center field job. Carlos Quentin is expected to return after the All-Star break and play left field — Podsednik’s current spot. Jermaine Dye can become a free agent after this season, and he’s entrenched in right field.

The situation could be resolved if the Sox slip from playoff contention, although manager Ozzie Guillen said he would endorse an extension for Podsednik if general manager Ken Williams asked him.

“Maybe people will be interested in [Podsednik] if we’re not in the pennant race,” Guillen said. “There are a lot of good things for him right now after being out of baseball earlier in the season.”

why

Is BA ALWAYS the answer at center field? I (and the ladies) love BA but he doesn’t (and hasnt) shown me anything that makes me sure he’s the CF option of the future.

Gammons might've been onto something w/ his AL ROY prediction

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/preview09/news/story?page=09expertpicks

Beckham is already only 9 RBI’s away from the leader in 58 fewer AB’s than Reimold. Assuming he can start turning on pitches like his HR last night, he seems to be a very good candidate as long as Price doesn’t go off. Wieters is having K problems and Andrus seems to only be able to score runs & only has 11 XBH in 50 Hits.

Players drafted before Fields

Matt Bush (#1)
Wade Townsend
Christopher Nelson
Neil Walker
William Bray

Some of those guys may end up with better careers than Fields, but some definitely won’t. Fields was not a bad draft pick at the slot the Sox picked in.

I concur

To quote Lorne Michaels – “the ingredients are there – but not the proportions.” If Beckham keeps doing what he’s doing – if Quentin can come back healthy – if we get more turns through the rotation like we just did – if Linebrink takes a wrong turn and ends up on the “Lost” island – the White Sox can take this division.

Of course, there is a good chance they will be shut out by a very good Dodger team – in which case the White Sox are doomed. DOOOOMED! Commence the fire sale and whatnot.

But since the Sox have been underachieving in many ways – the snap back to average would be kinda fun.

Plus – if the Sox stay within 5 games of first between now and the end of July – Kenny ain’t blowin’ it up.

Last 30 days

Run differential

Detroit 15-15 ( -6)
Minn 16-13 (24)
Sox 16-13 (26)
KC 8-19 (-67)
Clev 13-16 (-2)

That was with the dreadful home stand of course. The ridiculous home/away splits has to even out but this team makes a move.

1. Brandon Allen
2. Daniel Hudson

I've got a post working on this

Allen is in my “Safe” category — though it will obviously go noted that there is no such thing as a safe category as far as KW is concerned

by The Cheat on Jun 21, 2009 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

my reasoning:

Kenny’s going after a pitcher if anything, though maybe a CF (guessing there ain’t one of those). Hudson’s a rising stock with a supposedly limited ceiling and the time clubs have had evaluate him in the minors isn’t that extensive. Usually seems like you don’t give up pitching without getting pitching, so there’s Hudson. Allen’s value may be dipping a smidge, but I think he’ll probably start hitting bombs in Charlotte either way. so he has good value. but really i expect Kenny sees him as fairly replaceable. is he turning into a viable first division 1B any time soon?

You'd assume it's some of the guys named (or implied) for Peavy

Richard, Poreda, Hudson, and Carter you’d all assume would be available and I would guess Allen and Viciedo would be available as well.

My safe prospect list would be Flowers and Danks.

Of the other guys on the major league roster I would guess Getz, Fields, Anderson, Dotel, Linebrink, and Contreras would be very available.

It threw me off

All the basketball jerseys and sports caps….it was typical hippie gear back in the day, but now Phish has gotten a little gangsta! I couldn’t even find a decent veggie burrito!

They played great, really tight like they never brokeup. Lots of jamming last night…basically all jamming and it was amazing. I snuck up to the VIP area and had an amazing view right in the middle of the stage. Trey was staring right at me as he jammed to Time Turns Elastic….then I got kicked out of those seats, but well worth the hassle.

when theres two less teams in the NL than the AL

theres going to be some screwiness to the interleague schedules.

Thats why the Sox got the Pirates two years in a row.

This team seemingly has played a very easy schedule

and yet is still 3 games below .500

That said, the division is obviously there for the taking and if things break right the Sox can win this thing. Will need continued good health from the starters, Quentin to come back and give a boost (thinking 270/360/480) and for KW to pull the trigger on a move that significantly improves the team.

Great to see Gordon Beckham starting to hit the ball hard. And Scott Podsednik is a miracle man. Can’t stand his guts, but damn he’s making me eat my words this year.

That all comes down to on(or two) things:

we haven’t played Boston or New York yet….that is a big deal.

by dantesox on Jun 22, 2009 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's my worry

the sox needed to do better on their recent run of home/easy games. I have a strong feeling that the mediocre performance the past 20 games will come back to bite them in the ass when they are looking for wins 87,88,89 to take the division.

by madvillian on Jun 22, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

definitely a big deal

and why Im not too optimistic.

Yanks to start August, Boston to start September, and a finale vs the division leading Tigers.
Hopefully that last series means something.

On sports radio this morning Joe Cowley was saying

(take it with a grain of salt of course) that the Sox are looking more and more like they will be sellers very soon.

While I’d hate to lose someone like JD, I understand that business is business.

However, who the hell is out there for trade or sale that would make a (current or future) impact? The market seems a little sparse right now, si or no? And what player on the Sox would anybody want that the Sox can spare or get a decent return on?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I thought attendance was down slightly this year?

Although I’m sure revenue from ads, merch, etc is probably way down. Doesn’t every team get a share of MLBAM profit as well? I wonder what total projected revenue from all sources is this year vs 2008.

Obviously this will have a HUGE impact on sellers/buyers, although I see KW doing a sell job to JR based on how weak the division is.

with a solid 1-2-3 staff anything can happen in teh playoffs, that’s the line to use KW!

by madvillian on Jun 22, 2009 12:28 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

of course his sell job becomes easier if the team can get their heads above .500 (damn cub game)

I certainly get no one wants to hear (maybe even Jerry) about the playoffs until you erase under .500 in the sentence. Or erase negative run differential. Rob Neyer just dissed them again.

I just done see them getting a big enough return for the guys anyone would want

since Dye, Jenks, and possibly Dotel are all type A guys and next years draft is supposedly deep.
I also think KW and Tdogg get their rose colored glasses at the same shop and KW still thinks this thing is winnable.

KW made rumblings a couple of weeks back about the team being in transition and that he may have to make unpopular decisions. So, I’m not completely convinced he’s sold on “going for it” this year.

Jenks isn't a type anything

that would impact next years draft. And I would be careful in assuming type As for anyone at this point. After last season’s debacles, I would expect a different climate this year. If you offer someone arb, you better be ready to pay the $ for the one year deal. I would NOT be offering arb to Dotel no matter what, he’d be dumb not to accept, so he is the one guy I would want to move . . . if it gets to that point.

I hate listening to the score.

They act as though they are absolutely right about every decision the front office will make, and then belittle callers with it.

I take serious exception to that comment

I hate Boers and Bernstien (especially Bernstien).

I like Mully and Hanley

I havent heard much of Mac yet, but liked him at espn, Bernstien however is an asshole.

I hate Mac

I just hate the whole meathead persona on Chicago sports radio. B&B are arrogant pricks, but they at least attempt to bring some semblance of logic to discussion.

That Steve Nash is exactly the same as Kirk Hinrich, but worse.

he's the most pessimistic d-bag on that station.

today he’s hated on:

cub fans for cheering mark derosa, because he was on bad cub teams and doesnt deserve it.

Marinelli, because people like him and he doesnt think a line coach does anything.

the sox, because getting quentin back and getting anderson out makes them a worse team apparently, and they should trade the entire lineup because they’ll be abetter team with young players then with paulie, jd, thome, and aj. not like that’d going to create problems at all.

i like how during the basketball season

he said it didnt matter if the Bulls made the playoffs because they had no shot at winning the whole thing, so therefore the playoffs are worthless to them.

Yeah, that playoff experience they got in that series wont help those players later in their careers at all.

I gotta funny story about MJ and bangin broads

I was at Ontourage – when it was still kind of a cool place, about 6 years ago. A buddy and I were upstairs in the VIP area dancing with some pretty cute girls and best of all we were the only guys in the area, the rest were chicks (my friend new the bouncer). So we had the pick of the litter….until one 6 foot 6 inch, 6 time champion former bull showed up.

my buddy had the best quote that he said to MJ – “damn, this always happens, I’m just about ready to get my groove on and a big black man with $500 million in the bank shows up and ruins it .” MJ then patted him on the head and said sorry buddy and danced with all the ladies. This was before the divorce. Needless to say we didn’t get any that night.

Guess which GM?
One issue other teams have expressed is that the Nationals are said to be seeking to hit a grand slam with trades. “They want a dollar and a quarter for a dollar,” one competing GM complained.

From Jon Heyman’s Daily Scoop. I’ll say Kenny’s talking quarters again.

Was his capture like at the end of Fargo where Jerry Lundegaard was found in a motel room and the troopers dragged him out while he cried like a little girl?

I LOL'ed at Ozzie's first comment here:

Dewayne Wise wants more at-bats? Guillen offered a way for the outfielder to reach that goal.

‘’For some reason, I like [Wise] in the lineup,’’ Guillen said. ‘’[Saturday] he stole a base, he can run from first to third, he can do a lot of stuff, but I can’t get swinging at balls bouncing at the plate and [crap] every other pitch.

’’He’s got to give me better at-bats. You want to play more, get more at-bats? Give me better at-bats.’’
