You've Been Warned: White Sox Minor League Update
Kenny Williams has never been shy about trading players, especially his prospects. More often than not, there's a good argument to be made that Kenny made smart decisions by trading away players (Borchard, Reed, so on) who never panned out for players (Thornton, Garcia, so on) who become integral parts of White Sox teams. So, taking a riff from The Cheat earlier this week, of the current crop of top talent, who do you think is most likely to never appear in the White Sox uniform because he is traded?

manager chris cron leaves great falls to become white sox minor league infield instructor
Cron was tabbed earlier this week to be the minor league infield instructor, working with all White Sox farm clubs. As such, he’ll visit Great Falls on several occasions each summer. He managed his last game here Friday night.
He will be replaced by former major league pitcher Jose Bautista, 44, who served as pitching coach at Bristol (Va.) in 2008.

I said Carter. High upside type that KW just loves to sell high on.
I almost said Allen, though. He doesn’t really fit into the immediate plans unless he moves to the OF. That said, he should be the opening day 1B in 2011 if he stays.

If Thome / Dye don’t come back I’d think he fits in pretty well in 2010 ?

if not both.
Think about it; Dye and Thome are both fan favorites. Both will likely not be offered huge amounts on the FA market(Dye is more likely to get offers, of course) and both will likely sign for less than what other teams are offering. The Sox will certainly have the cash to ink them if they don’t splurge. Really not a lot to lose. Besides, Thome could end up in a good spot to get 600 next year. And who would replace them? I don’t see the point in rushing Allen. If anyone tails off next year, that’s the time to bring up Allen for good.

Dye also has a $12 mil option for 2010.

I doubt the Sox pick that up
more likely they buy him out or renegotiate.
by Daniel Berlyn on Jun 27, 2009 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
hence "at least"
Thome and Dye are the obvious route at this point. Kenny could certainly go in a radically different direction, but cost and player certainty are also important to him. Also, it looks like we’re buying pitchers, not position players at this point, with the young talent.

they only really need one starter
if that. I guess they could use another good pen arm, but there are plenty of candidates in the minors, as always.

Too many young 1B/DH possibilities with more flexibility (Dayan, T-Flow, e.g.).

Flowers... I'd say no
unless the Sox felt like they needed him or that it would be beneficial for his defense. I would hope that they would make sure he’s at least adequate as a catcher before they move him up to the majors to stay, but since he shouldn’t be on the team until the end of next year, I wouldn’t quite understand it.

who said anything about him staying.
call-up for september. as for understanding it, more games and more reps kind of sound beneficial to me. obviously a difference in talent, but i’d imagine he’s approximately on the donny lucy path of 2007-08, before he busted his knee. last month or so in charlotte, sept. callup, back to charlotte next season.

Q & A with laumann re: draft
phegley:
Were there any need positions in this draft that you feel like you filled?
Rosemary B.
Camden, NJ
Yes, I think there were. We had originally set out to get an impact guy for the top of the order, and we accomplished that. Also we wanted to get a front-line catcher who could possibly contribute with the core of minor leaguers that we have in high (Class) A and AA. With Josh Phegley, we did that. And we are always looking to add pitching, and we got a good mix of both college and high school pitching in rounds 2-10.
-——————————————————————————————————————-
Where do you see Phegley’s future with the White Sox, defensively? Doug O.
I have heard much talk and even criticism about whether Josh can catch or not. I will stand behind my judgment as well as the judgment of several of my scouts and supervisors that say, without a doubt, he will be a catcher. His hands are good, he has plenty arm, he is strong and durable, and he is an unbelievable worker and leader.

How much of a concern is the k-rate?
I’ve been intermittently comparing his minor league record (K’s, mainly) to other high OBP sluggers. From the very limited research I’ve done it seems the 20-25% k-rate is workable so long as you can maintain the plus OBP and slugging skills. My only issue is the potential for that k-rate to rise when he makes the next big leap to the show. What do you think?

I'm not much concerned
His BB% ranks 2nd in the SL, and after tonight his ISO will be tops in the SL while playing in a pitcher’s park. With such advanced plate discipline and power, Flowers K% can increase when he makes the jump and his offensive value at catcher should be healthy

I think its concerning....
but maybe he just takes too many pitches. i’ve wracked my brain to think of anyone who has struck out that much in the minors and turned into a good major league hitter. hell i can’t think of many comps at all. cust? adam dunn was already an all-star at 23.

Tough day or what? Not sure where BB comes into play there . . . that was a different discussion. Luzinski’s walk rates were nowhere near Flowers either on a consistent basis.

Howard fits the bill almost
perfectly from a K% perspective and at a similar age/level. Which is the exact opposite of your statement above . . . where ‘guys like Howard never struck out that much in the minors’. I was just attempting to help the brain wracking . . . there have been successful MLB players that have struck out at these rates. The fact he is a C, only makes it that much more acceptable. Is it a concern? Sure. I am not too worried about it though.

yeah, you're right
about what i said, though i was just rambling. i still don’t think there are any adequate comps to flowers. there were a very few guys who struck out a ton in the minors and had some MLB success. none that i can find had similar BB/K levels. Luzinski is about as close as i could find if you just look at performance through AA.
by Hatchetm on Jun 30, 2009 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
A good comp
for both BB and K is Cust . . . he actually struck out at a more prolific rate. I think one can imagine the value of a guy similar to Cust at the plate, but at C would have.

Going above and beyond
Tyler Flowers, C, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Monday’s stats: 4-for-4, RBI, BB, SB
Sure he reached base in all five plate appearances, but how cool is it that a 250-pound catcher stole a base while gunning down Mobile’s only attempting thief? Now batting .346/.447/.641 in 23 June games, Flowers could be moving up soon, and with a White Sox team possibly on the verge of a major overhaul, Flowers’ future will certainly play a role in many big decisions that are made.

bryan morgado (3d rd) had himself a day pitching in the cape cod league
Tennessee pitcher Bryan Morgado had 13 strikeouts over just five innings of work and the Braves scored two eighth-inning runs to knock off the Kettleers at Doran Park.
Morgado recorded just two outs that did not come by way of a strikeout.
he walked just one and gave up one hit.

july 2 signing update
These teams don’t appear to be competing for any of the big-name prospects, and it’s possible they won’t hand out a single six-figure bonus this summer.
Chicago White Sox: The White Sox’ Latin American program is in need of serious renovations. Their farm system is lacking in Latin American prospects, and the organization has not been mentioned once in connection to a prospect in conversations leading up to July 2. The firing of former director of player personnel Dave Wilder in the wake of a federal investigation around allegations of bonus skimming have severely set back the franchise in Latin America.

Commentary on Hudson's pitch repertoire
I can’t recall whether Hudson’s full selection of pitches has been talked about. I know recent discussion has focused around his fastball, but I had a few more questions. A quick google search yielded this scouting report, but that goes back more than a year. I have to imagine some things have changed since then.
- The Ks are obviously wonderful. Is his slider still his best pitch (or “out pitch”)?
- At this point is he commanding three separate pitches?
- What of his fastball movement? All I have to look at is his GB/FB which doesn’t look all that great. Anything about him cutting his fastball or using a two-seamer?
Any answers would be appreciated.

White Sox center fielder Jordan Danks never lived up to expectations at the University of Texas, but after receiving an over-slot $525,000 bonus as a seventh-round pick last June, he’s almost been a revelation. He was initially batting .322/.409/.525 at High-A Winston-Salem, and has since had little trouble adjusting to more advanced pitching at Double-A, posting a .308/.387/.442 line for Birmingham before being sidelined with a wrist injury.
“I came away impressed with him,” said one scout, “he reminded me of Jordan Schafer with a little less power and a little more hitability,” he added, while adding praise for Danks’ overall game. “He plays a very good center field, he works the counts, he does all of the little things; he’s an everyday big leaguer for sure.”
