HITf/x Snapshot of the April White Sox
Before I finish the weekend wrap-up, here's the HITf/x data for the Sox. Sportvision release a month's worth of data (April 2009), so this covers the batted balls by, and against, White Sox at that time.
These graphs don't cover the direction the ball was hit, just the speed. But it gives a nice overall idea of how hard these guys hit the ball. The length of each colored bar represents the percentage of batted balls in that speed bracket for each hitter.
Same thing, but for batted balls against the pitchers.

So Egbert was the only pitcher to not get very hard-hit balls off of him? Bad luck
that he was lit up? And Getz and BA hit the least fearsome balls. Figures.
Interesting. Thanks.

nice heat map
i love this stuff, though it took me a few reads to understand exactly what was being measured.
if the data aggregation has become so sophisticated, why then the need for umpires?

would the best players have almost an even distribution of speeds they can hit?
that would make me believe that they can hit multiple types of pitches where someone who hits primarily 90 + would only be able to hit fastballs

now it makes a lot more sense than guys hitting 10 mph pitches

You wonder why the Asians and Indians are eating our lunches in education.
Guys like matt are explaining this stuff to their constituents. I’m putting in for the first shuttle when the moon begins to be colonized. Earth will be a dangerous place.
