The Future Freaks Me Out: White Sox Minor League Update
Now that the savior of the South Side, St. James Gordon Beckham, has graced us with his presence, who do you think the next Chicago White Sox prospect will be to make his major league debut? Will it be a lower tier prospect like a Carlos Torres? A higher profile one like an Aaron Poreda? An injury forced necessity like a Tyler Flowers? A dark horse candidate? Orlando Hudson? Cast your vote below - write-ins are welcome.

playoff update
as many of you are aware, the first half winners play the second half winners (except in the international league) and we’re approaching the end of the first half.
winston-salem is five games up in the southern division of the carolina league and, barring a collapse, likely have it sewn up.
birmingham is six games up in the southern division of the southern league. mobile is a tough team but, like the dash, the barons likely have a spot sewn up, as well.
kannapolis is 4.5 games out in the SAL north.
charlotte is 10.5 games – but only 9.5 out of the wild card and they’ve got until the end of the year to overhaul that.

what's the hitting environment like in the sally league?
is power somewhat suppressed? i assume the pioneer league is hitter-friendly with a lot of high elevation cities, but kuhn’s power has fallen off a cliff. and if he can’t play short, it looks like he might not be a real prospect.
thoughts?
by Ryno on Jun 8, 2009 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
kannapolis' park suppresses home runs for sure.
but not doubles. overall, i’m frankly not sure how the SAL is playing these days. some new parks have been added/renovated and i haven’t seen an overall league factor – maybe someone else knows a link for that.
and i don’t think kuhn is a “real” prospect. he’s not that good at SS. could be a utility type. has good speed. contact rate is good. exhibits decent plate discipline so far. all of this is subject to translation to higher levels – he is old and, being a college player, more advanced than a lot of his competition in the sally.

Right and from
my perspective, there isn’t anything he could do at AA the remainder of the year that would lead to a promotion to AAA. Even if he starts showing great power the rest of the year, there is still a ton to work on defensively, but like you said things change. I just would leave him there . . . he is only 20, so I dont know what the rush would be.

IF we are waving any flags whatsoever I could see him being called up in Sept. Plus, his OPS has increased markedly as his comfort level has seemingly increased.
However, he ain’t ready yet. Just sayin’ if we are opening the floodgates to our minor league/parent club road why the eff not test him in Sept.?

I really think this has to be viewed
differently from the org perspective. Beckham can hit MLB pitching now and likely be better than our current options at their respective positions. Not the same for Viciedo. Poreda has been bullpen ready for some time . . . there is no part of Viciedo’s game that is MLB ready . . .

or is likely to be.
if something clicks and he starts raking, sure, call him up. but teams don’t usually give september cameos to players they don’t plan on using pretty quickly in the following season. all calling him up would do is bring back some of that asinine garbage we were reading in ST about how he was totally ready for the majors. this guy looks two seasons away.

Chicago White Sox
Released: RHP Luis Teis, C Francisco Hernandez, C Eric Hollis
Recalled: RHP Kelvin Jimenez
Added to 40-man roster: LHP Wes Whisler, SS Gordon Beckham
Outrighted to Triple-A and removed from 40-man: RHP Kelvin Jimenez, C Corky Miller
Placed on 7-day DL: C Mike Grace
Reinstated from DL: RHP Miguel Socolovich, C Eric Hollis
Reinstated from inactive list: C Francisco Hernandez
Beckham, 22, zoomed through the minor leagues in just 59 games. The eighth overall pick last June, he batted .330/.381/.528 with a minor league-leading 23 doubles in 176 at-bats. And he did so while playing all over the infield, in anticipation of a similar role in the big leagues—as a rookie, at least.

Getting adjusted to Estados Unidos
Dayan Viciedo, 3B, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Monday’s stats: 3-for-4, RBI, BB
The White Sox are always big players when it comes to Cuban imports, and Viciedo was last winter’s big prize. Taking a guy from Cuba to the United States always comes with a difficult adjustment period, so it was no big surprise that the 20-year-old struggled at Double-A in his first exposure to American baseball, but he’s definitely getting the hang of things. His .284/.303/.374 line fails to impress, and he’s still swinging at everything, but he’s also hitting .397 in his last 14 games and giving plenty of reasons for optimism.

someones didn't want to lie.
Q: So far, what is the Sox’s assessment of Dayan Viciedo’s fielding ability at third? —Kurt Livingston, Marion, Iowa
A: Kurt, sorry for getting back to you later than you probably wanted. I asked two Sox officials but never received a response. So I asked a veteran National League scout who saw Viciedo play in spring training and with Birmingham.
His assessment was that Viciedo has improved defensively since last spring but needs to improve his agility. It’s one scout’s opinion, but this is someone I respect highly.

garsonf (Chicago): Likelihood of reaching them aside, which White Sox OF draftee has a higher ceiling: Mitchell or Thompson? While we’re here, are the Sox going to get Thompson signed?
Kevin Goldstein: Thompson has the higher ceiling, which almost sounds insane when you consider how high Mitchell’s is. I was shocked to see Trayce go in the second round, and I get the feeling that the White Sox know something about his signability that I don’t.

kevin (chicago): WHite Sox josh phegley overdraft? Wouldve it been too early to take a ryan ortiz?
Kevin Goldstein: I love the White Sox draft overall, but Phegly was a real head-scratcher for me. I guess it takes just one team to believe he can catch (because he really can hit), but I never found that team. I guess in the end, it was the White Sox.
garsonf (Chicago): My perception is that the White Sox have been pretty aggressive pushing high draft picks through their system. Do you think they’ll try to take that approach with Mitchell, despite his relative rawness?
Kevin Goldstein: I guess I’m not sure with your perception totally. I think the White Sox are doing when many teams are doing these day, and something I’m a big fan of, which is not worrying about a template and simply letting each player’s talent dictate his timetable — I think they’ll do the same with Mitchell.

profile of the dash's dale mollenhauer
“I think the way I am as a player I have to do everything,” Mollenhauer said. “It’s not one thing that’s going to separate me. It’s everything. I just come out here every day, and there’s something I have to get better at.”
McEwing describes Mollenhauer as a “grinder” for his hard-nosed, dogged approach to the game.
“What impresses me most is he doesn’t take a pitch off, defensively or offensively,” McEwing said. "He’s a student of the game, and he picks up the little things and does the little things to help your team win.

Groundball machine
Charles Shirek, RHP, White Sox (Double-A Birmingham)
Thursday’s stats: 3-for-6, HR (1), R, RBI, 2 K
A 23rd round pick in 2007, Shirek had a 6.39 ERA in his final season at Nebraska, as well as an arrest for an alcohol-related incident that involved he and a teammate beating up a bike (don’t ask), but scouts always like his ability to sink a ball. He’s refined the pitch even further since turning pro, and 15 of the 21 outs he recorded in his Double-A were of the groundball variety. He doesn’t really have a big league swing-and-miss offering, and his ceiling is middle relief at best, but that’s not bad thing for a 23rd round guy.

and i imagine such information is easily found. whatever the number, who are you going to take out of the lineup? better hitters against righties like thome or konerko? enjoy the fun he provides at third? guys who can’t play defense need a better hook than “i bat .790 against righties in my career.”

danks #7 of most successful 08 picks so far; hudson and carter get mentions.
No. 7 JORDAN DANKS, OF
WHITE SOX
Team: Double-A Birmingham (Southern)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .317/.396/.489 (72-for-227), 44 R, 72 H, 15 2B, 3 3B, 6 HR, 30 RBI, 31 BB, 63 K, 7 SB
The Scoop: Danks slid all the way to the seventh round in the ‘08 draft because of concerns about his power. But by focusing on what he does well (hit for average, get on base, run down liners in center field) the White Sox have gotten a lot out of Danks already. He earned a quick promotion to Double-A after only 148 class A at-bats, and he’s shown no problems holding his own against older pitchers. The White Sox farm system ranked 16th in our pre-season rankings. Thanks to their 2008 draft and picks like Danks, Chicago will likely move up in next year’s rankings.
…
We’ve already mentioned Gordon Beckham and Jordan Danks from the White Sox ’08 draft class. Dexter Carter (13th round) has also had an solid start to his career, but 22-year-old fifth-rounder Dan Hudson has already been promoted to high Class A Winston-Salem thanks to his 5-4, 2.70 season with 71 K and a 0.92 WHIP in 71 IP.
