FREE White Sox Tickets To The First 250 Men Over 40

I realize this is my first post and I hope you all do not think this is SPAM but we have been working with the Chicago White Sox to provide a free prostate cancer screening on June 10, 2009, and the first 250 men who get screened that day will get a voucher for a pair of FREE tickets to a Chicago White Sox home game this season.  I am trying to get the word out as the Press Release just went out today...

I realize most of you might already have season tickets and the like but in commemorating National Men's Health Month and an early Father's Day present, this offer just might not only save someone's life but also gets some one into the ballpark!

Again, I hope this reaches someone out there and please feel free stop by on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 between Noon and the end of the second inning where we will be in Parking Lot A offering these FREE screenings and FREE tickets to the first 250 men.  NO STRINGS ATTACHED!

This public service for men is being brought to you by the Chicago White Sox, Ed Randall's Bat for the Cure, Illinois Department of Public Health and Northwestern.

PS  My first ever baseball game that I ever saw was in the early 1960’s at Comiskey Park where they played the NY Yankees and Mickey Mantle was still playing....

No strings?

Sheesh. The rectal examination in a proper prostate screening exam sure seems like a lot of fun.

Here are the details and the DRE is optional...

Mobile testing vans will be on site for the free screenings in Parking Lot A at the corner of South Wentworth Avenue and West 35th Street outside the stadium. The Illinois Department of Public Health will supply the medical vans, which are completely safe to conduct these tests and doctors from Northwestern Memorial Hospital will oversee the screenings.

The complimentary screenings will begin at Noon and continue through the 2nd inning of the White Sox-Tigers game being played that night. As an incentive, the first 250 men over 40 who have the tests will receive two free upper reserved seating tickets to a 2009 regular season White Sox game based on availability.

As a public health professional

thanks for providing the additional details. Also, I wonder what your thoughts were on the studies published in New England a couple months back?

Our position is that the jury is still out on this long term study.

In addition, I have a state mandate to screen men for prostate cancer using the PSA blood test. So until that is changed, I am still helping others help men to get screened.

Finally, try asking a survivor of being treated for prostate cancer who is still alive and (now) well after getting screened for prostate cancer and discovering that he had it. I will bet that they will be pretty solidly behind men getting screened as it quite possibly saved his life…

I can provide a whole bunch of survivors who are huge proponents of getting screened and modern medicine has been steadily catching up on the treatment side so men do not have to face other side effects as they once did.

Again, Ed Randall and our state director of Public Health, Dr. Damon Arnold, are both survivors of prostate cancer and only discovered they had it after getting screened. Just ask either of them or their loved ones how they feel about the PSA blood screening.

You are most welcome!

I am trying my darndest to get the word out about this event and any and ALL assistance is appreciated. As a matter of fact, we would like to not only help as many men as we can but also beat the Tampa Rays who screened 400 men at their event last year.

Can the Chicago White Sox do better?

why am i not surprised that tampa holds the record.

Ok, I'm freaked out. Has my account been hacked? First of all, you'll notice the different time stamps (my first one, the one I actually posted, shown in PDT, as it should). The second one is YELLOW (it popped up while I was in this thread) which...

…you are all aware, your own comments are NEVER yellow. And it is the only comment I see that is shown in CDT.
Nor have I ever seen my own name come up in the “New Comments” pop-up box on the page, which it just did.

WHAT THE FUCK!?

Yeah...surrre.

prostate cancer is very serious...

That said, I really hope that there are medical professionals involved in these “screenings” [not Herbert from Family Guy wearing a lab coat]

by No It All on Jun 9, 2009 11:44 AM CDT reply actions

oh i can read....

but just because a person tells you they are from they are from the Illinois Department of Public Health and/or Northwestern does not make it so… nor does it make them a doctor. Even if legit are these doctors, nurses, orderlies, volunteers or all of the above. Don’t get all uppity, I’m just anal when it comes to stuff like this.

no you're not

Question after the fact: What made you think this total stranger was a reputable member of the medical community and licensed to perform such an intimate procedure?

Answer: I met him in the parking lot at a baseball game. Afterward he gave me a free ticket to the game. Plus I initially heard about him on a White Sox blog and since he was on THAT blog he must have been reputable.

by No It All on Jun 9, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point. Contrast with the normal way of seeing a doctor:

I met him in an office and he had a white coat on and one of those heart-listeny things around his neck. Afterward he gave me a bill. Plus I initially heard about him from another guy in a white coat who I had never met before, and since that guy said good things about him he must have been reputable.

don't be so sensitive

in this particular instance i did not intend to “tell anybody off”…. i just hope everyone makes sure the guy or gal is wearing gloves. no gloves is a deal breaker. and tell your girlfriends, wives, sisters, mothers and daughters to totally ignore the guy in lot B giving away free pap smears while you are getting your prostate exam in lot A.

I have created a MONSTER!

You all make me laugh tonight! I just arrived in Chicago (I live in Springfield) and am sitting here at the Hyatt in Lombard checking the news and getting “prepped” for tomorrow when I find this thread took on a life of its own.

Anyway, I do work for the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and ANYONE who stops by Parking Lot A tomorrow will see TWO (2) IDPH Wellness on Wheels vehicles with BIG banners on the sides saying, “Free Prostate Cancer Screening”

And, no, I will not be doing any probing or drawing of blood as that I leave to the good and capable hands of the doctors from Northwestern Hospital in Chicago. They have volunteered to help other men for free and I believe most, if not all, are urologists, so they are quite familar with what goes where and what doesn’t – or shouldn’t!

Anyway, look for me if you come down tomorrow as you can’t miss me as I am pretty big guy wearing a blue Illinois Department of Public Heath golf shirt….and I will not have any latex gloves on my person!

You all take care and thanks for making me smile as it has been a long journey to get here and I sincerely hope we get as many men out tomorrow to take advantage of this free screening as possible.

G’nite!

Thank you for allowing me to post this information here and hope we can bring it to the White Sox again! We did screen just under a hundred men and I know that we helped several more. Once again, thank you!

by winningugly on Jun 11, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, as the tailgaters got going, we had a few lookers but….

Just kidding!

However, if it weren’t for many of the women, then men would (continue to) avoid this issue but we had a dozen or so women who dragged their men to get screened. But I always find it interesting that when some men read the banners saying “Free Prostate Cancer Screening” on the sides of our mobile vehicles, their head does a 180 and they start walking faster…away!

And even though we just got say a 100 men, I will venture a guess that between 10 to 20 percent will be referred for further review – and many will have never even had an inkling of their possible issue!

Many times it is nothing more that something else but try telling that one man who got screened and who had never experienced an issue only to discover they have a prostate issue that the screening isn’t worth the time and effort.

It is interesting that we have all this discussion over the value of screening for prostate cancer but when you look back here in the US how the mortality rateshave been dropping some years after they started to offer screening, while the rates for breast cancer in women – a similar mortality number – have not shown the same decrease and that is after all the money that has been thrown at getting women screened!

Is there a cause and effect in play for men? I do not know but ask that man who is walking around alive today who got screened, went for diagnosis, chose a treatment and who just might not have been here if he hadn’t.

I am just saying…

I get this done annually since I'm an OPOS...and I also applaud this event...

but there has got to be a joke in there somewhere about the Sox bending us over and doing this to us just about every game so far this year.
