Not following you at all. I'm thinking his fastball is ML-ready for bullpen work.
If anything, this might set up a trade of Dotel or even Jenks, with Thornton closing and Poreda throwing an earlier inning?

Levine
The White Sox are calling up pitching prospect Aaron Poreda today from Double-A Birmingham, according to ESPNChicago.com’s Bruce Levine.
Poreda, 22, first broke the news on his Facebook page, according to Levine, who later confirmed the move with a source close to the situation.
The 6-6, 240-pound Poreda is a hard-throwing left-hander. He was the Sox’s No. 1 pick — 25th overall — in 2007.
Poreda was rated the top prospect in the Sox organization in 2008, and he was ranked third in ’09 behind Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo.

Poreda to Start?
The youth movement continues on the South Side, as a source close to the situation confirmed that left-hander Aaron Poreda is going to be added to the 25-man roster today, likely taking Bartolo Colon’s spot in the starting rotation.
Manager Ozzie Guillen said Monday that he and general manager Ken Williams had a lengthy meeting before the first game of the doubleheader with Detroit to discuss different scenarios, and with the Jake Peavy deal falling flat, as well as Colon’s struggles possibly health-related, Guillen hinted they felt they had no choice but to go with their best prospect in Poreda
why do you say that?
I think Colon is going on the DL or getting DFA.

Two spots basically have to be freed up. Colon’s and ? for Contreras and Poreda.
It has to be Richard – maybe Floyd? I don’t see them going with 4 lefties in the rotation…thus something is happening with Richard…..gotta be? I’ve had too much coffee.

What would we trade for if we are assuming Contreras and Poreda have a spot in the rotation?
3B and put Beckham at 2B? Or they’ve decided Q is out for the year and then feel the need to trade for a CF and put Pods in LF? I guess in the short term you could just keep Richard in the bullpen for a while until something happens. Not a bad thing to have a solid bullpen.
by Grinder in Training on Jun 9, 2009 11:43 AM CDT up reply actions
Even then, you're still carrying 6 starters,
assuming Contreras’s performance last night won him a rotation spot. It doesn’t make sense to ‘stop’ Poreda’s progress/development in the minors by having him start in the majors when he’s likely going to give you the same serviceable level of production as Richard, unless Richard’s gone.
Yeah, why move Poreda up and Richard to the pen
right now? I think Richard is gone.

I think at the very least you need to wait until after this series to be sellers. We’re potentially a josh fields error from being 3.5 back and I like this teams odds of catching up whenever the real summer decides to show up, couple that with beckham starting to hit sometime and getting Q! back…

by Daniel Berlyn on Jun 9, 2009 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions
My personal feelings aside (Poreda + Freddy = let me reiterate, HOOOOOOOOOOO YEAHH!!!), this does seem odd.
Colon is probably out for now and one would think Contreras would take his spot. Having said that, it sounds like Contreras can’t make Colon’s next start (see Cheat’s recap), so maybe Poreda is just up for that for the time being? Would they really bring him up for one start then do something else with him? Seems odd.
Richard has not been bad at all since moving to the rotation — even yesterday was more blarghhh than BLARGHHHH. To bring Poreda up for him seems odd.
Bring Poreda up to be in the ‘pen? Obviously The Organization is in a better position to know this than us, but intuitively, doesn’t it seem better developmentally for him to continue to make regular starts in the minors than get irregular work out of the bullpen? Seems odd.
Or maybe it’s part of a series of moves whereby the Sox officially “become sellers” this year. But doing that while in the middle of a 5-game series against the 1st place team in the division … seems odd.

My guess on how this works is...
He will start this week. That way no one pitches on short rest because of the double header. Then he will go to the pen as insurance for Jose stinking and/or getting hurt again. Colon is gone.
Poreda to work out of bullpen initially?
Now hearing that Poreda was told by Birmingham coaches that he will start in the bullpen, before being moved into rotation.
Per Cowley’s Twitter
In other words, Colon is on life support, not yet flat-lined.

Kinsler is hitting .182-ish on the road.
I cant believe what a bum Kendrick is turning out to be. He was a beast in the minors.
He even got doubled off the other day after forgetting how many outs there were.
Id probably make that deal since Kendrick has been so bad, and then give him the occasional shot to turn it around when the Rangers are on the road.
South Side (Cant) Hit (For Shit) Men
I would
Kinsler is one of the top second basemen. Easier to get good production from OF. Not to mention Kinsler is just flat out better anyway regardless of position. Kinsler will probably have more RBI, HR, R, and S than Braun, and do that at 2nd base. Then you throw in you’re playing Kendrick at 2B right now? Do this immediately.
by BoxingHideout on Jun 9, 2009 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions
This is bad advice
without knowing what S is, I can guarantee that Kinsler will not have more HR and RBI than Kinsler. Kinsler will probably end up with more runs scored- but Braun has twice the power that Kinsler does.

Jeez, Bally. Not cloudy enugh for you? Like I said, you'll be singing a different song
after they win the next 3.
“Sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows…”
The City of Chicago, led by Mayor Daley and a vast and tumorous army of aldermen and bagmen and yesmen and opportunists and spineless, parasitic political-machine halfwits of forms never seen outside the roiling cesspool of governmental slop-trough greed, has proven itself unworthy of something as potentially delicious and fulfilling as the 2016 Olympic Games.

Fields
Getz

Pitching is / should be / can be very good, though

did anyone, other than WTGTD, ever argue this team was good?
they look a lot like a .500ish team. which i think is what most expected.
White Sox Minor League Updates: http://twitter.com/SouthSidelarry
I thought this team would be a "good enough" .500 team, for the record
and by “good enough”, I was hoping that meant to repeat as AL Central Champs.
The verdict isn’t in, but at times their sloppy play has been hard to follow.

have you been impressed with the stellar play of the team in pole position to be the central champion?
it’s not like one needs to squint or anything to see that the sox aren’t deluding themselves when they think they can contend in this midget contest. no one is playing over their head like last year (at least no one yet).

Oh, I certainly agree with what you are saying, which is why I wrote "the verdict isn't in"
I was further commenting that watching a team make errors and not execute is hard to watch, but I recognize every team, good and bad, goes through stretches like that.
It wasn’t meant to be a doom and gloom post

so ask yourself
what would a useful Q or another quality bat mean to the team this year in this situation? We can talk about the abstract on how “good” this team is till the cows come home but the fact remains with all the crap they are 4.5 out or 5.5 total.
"I'm just here to provide street cred"
having Q in the line-up
means we don’t need wise/BA starting everyday, i think that means a lot, assuming if Q recovers nicely from PF and plays closer to last year’s numbers

yeah I don't
though stranger things have happened. I do expect Beckham to improve on Field’s nonsense. Offensively and to a degree defensively. Add a little of what Larry said and your in business.
"I'm just here to provide street cred"
Generally, I would think that the negative value of Pods replacing Anderson in CF would overcome the positive in his bat...
but given how bad BA and Wise have been sucking, Pods is probably a net gain.
But overall, I’m in agreement with you, larry, and Tdogg that the Sox aren’t in such a bad position, despite the multiple vortexes of suck they have in the line-up. I think my post was taken in a much more negative fashion than it was intended.

a little quentin here, a little beckham replacing fields there, the usual KW farm depleting trade over yonder.

"the usual KW farm depleting trade over yonder"
if by end of season, the only significant prospect (depends on how you characterize significant of course) trades away is poreda, would you consider that significant / harmful farm depletion…

poreda isn't on the farm anymore.
it always depends upon what you get back. losing the only pitching prospect of any note is certainly harmful. i don’t consider poreda to be such hot shit that he shouldn’t traded. only beckham and flowers fall into that category for me.

I think we're too hard on Getz
the kid has less than 3 months of real major league experience. And he’s still hitting a sortofrespectable .250. We’ve had much worse luck with rookies: ie BA 2006.
if fields wasn’t completely inadequate, getz’s triple would have been a game winner.
