Draft Day!
Live Feed: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2009/draftlive_app.jsp
The expanded three-day event starts today at 5 p.m. CT ... MLB Network ... will televise the entire first round live for the first time at its new studios in New Jersey, after two years of ESPN broadcasting the event at Disney World in Florida. The 32 first-round selections will also be simulcast live on MLB.com. Beginning with the 33rd pick, up-to-the-minute on-air coverage from the remaining rounds will shift exclusively to MLB.com/Live, where host Vinny Micucci will be joined by MLB.com Draft expert Jonathan Mayo and Major League Scouting Bureau director Frank Marcos. ... The first day will consist of the first 111 picks, including Round One, Compensation Round A, Round Two, Round Three and Compensation Round B. There will be four minutes between first-round picks and one minute between all other selections. On Wednesday, the Draft will resume in the fourth round at noon ET and will be tentatively scheduled to go through the 30th round. The Draft will conclude on Thursday with the 31st through 50th rounds, beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET. The MLB.com coverage will include a live pick-by-pick stream, expert commentary and the exclusive Draft Tracker, a searchable database of every Draft-eligible player, featuring statistics, scouting reports and video highlights. It is a presentation that typically results in the heaviest traffic of the year on MLB.com, and this year it will be bigger than ever.

Any chance the Sox draft Purke?
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
I'll say .14049% chance
based on prior knowledge.

14%?
oh, there is a decimal point there….
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
Purke ain't a Boras client, is he?
I know he’s asking for a decent amount of money. Is it the consensus that the Sox won’t go over slot, or just that they won’t draft a Boras guy?
Hooray for Draft Day!
What are the thoughts on Williams vs Trout? I’ve seen Trout likened to Aaron Rowand. I believe he is asking for significant money as well?
I think Trout has the higher upside,
and I think I like him more, but I really don’t like his swing. If he can fix the fundamental flaws in it, and if he’s successful in his recent attempt to try switch-hitting, he’s my pick. The question becomes, who will fix it for him?
How do you like Mitchell?
Is 1st round a reach for him?
He's very intriguing,
and the 1st round isn’t a stretch at all. Even though Wheeler’s more ‘polished’, I’d much rather have Mitchell for the somewhat significant boost on the upside—I just don’t think there’s any chance he falls to the Sox. Even though scouts think he has a lot of holes in his swing, it has a very natural and effortless look to it, which bodes for his development now that he’s done with the two-sport experiment. While he could conceivably be a faster Mike Cameron, I see a franchise pushing him more towards the contact/OBP/speed route, with him winding up as a Kenny Lofton with more power.
A little bit of a stretch there, no?
I mean Kenny Lofton with power? Do you realize what kind of player that is? Not to mention that Mitchell strikes out fairly often, I think close to 25% of his PAs . . . not even in the ballpark of a Kenny Lofton.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
I should have said Kenny Lofton-type player.
I wasn’t trying to imply he’ll put up Lofton’s speed and average numbers + power, just that I see his style being in the same mold, but with additional power
And while he does strike out a lot, he has a relatively compact swing in which his hands stay on top of the ball pretty well despite his hips bailing out a little early. Dropping his elbow down on the load should help with his launch angle and contact rate.
I dont think his swing is nearly
as problematic as you state . . . particularly for an 18 year old.
http://insider.espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4161351&categoryid=3975306
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
My problem is with his hands.
It’s not as evident here as it is on his MLB.com video, but you can still see it. Instead of making contact out in front, he has a tendency of handcuffing his hands to his back hip. He’s a big kid with an aluminum bat that’s feasting on New Jersey high school pitching, so not getting great extension will only handicap him so much at this level.
Related to this, and which you can see in the BP swings, is he has a very dramatic weight transfer forward. This causes his body to get out in front so that almost all of his weight is on his front leg. This would allow him to kill a predictable HS fastball, but will pose problems with professional off-speed stuff.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s still a first-round talent. I’m just nitpicking since, like you said, there’s not a lot separating him from comparable outfielders in the draft.
He definitely has some work,
just think his flaws are easier to fix than the long swing of Jared Mitchell whom you have high praise for.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
I think Trout is the best OF the Sox potentially could have a chance
at drafting . . . like him over just about all OFs short of Ackley. Though the separation b/w him and say Wheeler is not significant.

20. Toronto Blue Jays: Tim Wheeler, OF, Sacramento State
There remains the possibility that the Jays will be a little adventurous and take a high school bat, but the college bat route seems like a more plausible route. Wheeler, Pollock, Sanchez could all be considered if available.
21. Houston Astros: Jared Mitchell, OF, LSU
Mitchell, the best athlete, at least among the college bat drop, still seems like he could fit well in this system.
22. Minnesota Twins: Matt Hobgood, RHP, Norco (Calif.) H.S.
Hobgood might be gone earlier, in which case the Twins could consider another high school arm, like Garrett Gould, or a high school bat, like Michael Trout or Everett Williams. They’re still discussing the “what if” scenario if Gibson drops this far, which he may very well do.
23. Chicago White Sox: Everett Williams, OF, McCallum H.S., Austin Texas
The thinking has been that the White Sox want a toolsy bat in this spot, and that still could be Trout or Williams. Williams was off the board in an earlier edition; now he’s not.
24. Los Angeles Angels: Matt Purke, LHP, Klein (Texas) H.S.
Just how far the talented lefty falls is hard to pinpoint, but the Angels haven’t been afraid to go the “tough sign” route before. With the insurance of multiple picks this year, it might be the right time to take a chance
Last projection: Trout
25. Los Angeles Angels: Jiovanni Mier, SS, Bonita (Calif.) H.S.
As mentioned above, the Angels love Southern California talent. Mier is probably the best pure shortstop, and the chance to get a local kid at a premium position might be too good to pass up.
26. Milwaukee Brewers: Michael Trout, OF, Millville (N.J.) H.S.
If the Brewers go bat, they’d love for Borchering to fall. But with him off the board and the toolsy outfielder from the Northeast here, this could be the pick. Garrett Gould might be the choice if they want to go arm.
Last projection: Gould
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
goldstein's final mock
23. Chicago White Sox: The Sox have learned their lesson after wasting first-round picks on low-ceiling pitchers like Lance Broadway and Kyle McCulloch. They’re focused solely on upside this year, with the obvious names (Williams, Jackson, Heathcott) all in play, although they’re not ruling out a high school arm. From among what’s left, Williams is the best talent.
Pick: Everett Williams, OF, McCallum HS (TX)

(from larry’s post)
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
So who do we want?
I’ve been hoping for Sanchez, but it looks like he’ll be way gone at this point, despite being a serious overdraft. At this point in the draft, though, it looks like the Sox’ brass are going to be in a far better position to judge talent than we are. So as long as there’s no obvious fuck up, I don’t really care or have a particular desire for any one player.
THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY
I think that is fair
it is likely they will their choice between several similarly talented players or spending some dough on a higher talent that falls due to signability. Not a bad year to be drafting in the 20s and have several early round picks.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
Agreed.
I would like to go for a premium position first and a pitcher in the supplemental round. It’s too bad Sanchez will be gone, a) because I loved watching him playing in college, and b) he’d be the perfect platoon/supplement for Flowers down the road (i.e. defensive stud). At the same time, I’m not sure I want to be the victim of the overdrafting you Colin mentioned.
Sanchez is a wierd case
He seems to be all over the place — I’ve seen him going as early as #4 to the Pirates to falling to the second round in various mock drafts. It’s kind of indicative of this whole draft.
Sanchez is an overdraft
except he isn’t even though he is. That’s what I’ve gotten so far, anyway. Basically, he’s a moneyball pick for whomever will take him, and yet people won’t throw stones like the Castro pick last year(though there are whispers that the Pirates will take Sanchez to spread money around the draft).

Seems like a fine pick at #23 – groundballing type, three plus pitches, good k-rate…
sounds good to me
The greatest trick the White Sox ever pulled was convincing their fan base that "Ozzieball" ever existed.
If people overblow Kyle Gibson's injury and he somehow falls to us,
do you take him? I would think you have to.
I was on record in the previous
thread as yes . . . particularly because the Sox have several picks and can afford to take a high reward/high risk type player. He fits that bill.
You're a lot of woman, you know that? Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
at 23?
i’d really rather not. the system needs prospects, period. pitchers wash out enough. ones with injuries that the Sox medical staff can’t run through the ringer pre-draft? pass, especially with first round pick.

from his earlier post, Law says Scheppers and Crow aren't in his first round:
Right now, I don’t have Aaron Crow or Tanner Scheppers going in the first round. Teams in the top 10 are telling me that neither is a top choice for them, with a few teams pointing to medical concerns about Scheppers, and everyone pointing to their belief that neither player will sign for less than what he turned down last year. Of course, either player could go later in the round or even afterward and still get a seven-figure bonus, but more than one scouting director or general manager has told me in the past few days that he doesn’t want to risk a first-round pick on a player who might not sign.
THIS STORY ONLY ENDS ONE WAY
I think it goes without saying
that if the Sox splurged on either, I would be rather happy.

Recommended Bonuses
Stephen Strasburg can ask for $50MM this summer because nothing officially limits the amount teams spend on their draft picks. Bud Selig presents each team with a recommendation for its slot, but they don’t have to stick to it. Here’s a quick explanation of slotting:
* Selig recommends a limit to keep bonuses down.
* There are no direct consequences for a club that awards a big bonus.
* Teams aren’t supposed to know what the recommended bonuses are for other slots.
* This year, the recommended bonuses are 10 percent smaller, because of the economy.
Thanks to Murray Chass’s recent article on the subject.

You can either play in the majors or you can’t… so I’d say your idea is a great one

Really?
As a player matures and grows into their body it’s common for them to lose a step or two.
it makes sense...
but it’s the first time i’ve seen it in a present/future prediction of a prospect of these prospects and the hitters in the first round.

We should draft based on upside on their ability to bunt and move the runner over.

So if these three guys are still around when the Sox are up, whats the word on the tree?
Is Trout the best OF between the three?
Most people would take Trout.
I think it’s a fine pick so long as we don’t take Williams.

Keith Law: This is surprising — all three top prep outfielders (Trout, Williams, Fuentes) still on the board. I had Williams rated well below the other two but didn’t expect all three to still be here at 24.
Jason Churchill: Mitchell, a two-sport star at LSU, has one nick in his armor — strikeouts. Good athlete with plus speed and some power, draw walks and may be able to play center. has arm for right field and his focus on baseball now should help his development.
That's the one thing that I haven't quite taken into account
